Joe Strain Aussie/Lonestar Hybrid

Post by DarenHenryW »

Here is a whip that I helped a friend of mine order. He isn't a member here, but I know that he would love to know that you guys are getting a look at it.

This being his first whip, he really wanted something that encompassed all of the best attributes (in his opinion) of all of my different whips.

What he liked was:
  • 10" handle
    8' length
Thinner, somewhat lighter handle (lighter than the average Indy whip, for instance)
    Lonestar styling
So, I called Joe up and we had a great conversation about the best way to go about creating this whip. One of the best whips I've ever cracked was an "Aussie" style whip that Joe made for Louie Foxx. It is the most effortless whip to crack I've ever handled, and I really loved the slimmer handle. Having visited with Joe in person last summer, I also had a chance to crack one of his 8' Lonestar whips, which come standard with a 10" handle, though this handle is very heavy, because instead of an 8" nail, which you would find in an Indy whip, the Lonestar whip has a 10" nail. For my taste, it had too much weight.

So, with all of this in mind, instead of a 6' "Aussie" whip with a slim 12" handle, which has a spring steel core, not a heavy nail, Joe made this whip with the heaviest gauge spring steel, 10" long, 8' long, and here it is:

It is Brandy in color, btw, with natural highlights.

My friend is very happy with it, as am I, and as I told him, as soon as it shows up, I'm gonna be jealous and want one for myself. And now that I've had a chance to crack it (did that Wednesday), I definitely am. Though, I realize that I will be even more jealous of it once it is more broken in. Joe's whip are the tightest out there, as those of you who own one or more well know.

But, since I have too many irons in the fire right now, it will be awhile before I make an order, though I'm thinking of having Joe make mine 7' long, possibly 7.5', and possibly with a 12" handle, with a silver ferrule so I can perhaps have my initials engraved on it. It will come out much like the "Zorro" inspired whip from this thread. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=51687

Love that whip!

IS your friend a newbie to whipping or not? Either way that is an excellent whip for him.

He's cracked some of my whips on and off for a couple years. But this is his first personal whip. He's thrilled with it, as am I.

Glad to hear you loved my latest Zorro inspired beauty from Joe - that's a very nice whip Joe made up for your friend as well.

Also interesting to hear that you want to have a whip similar to the one I had made and that you want to have your initials engraved on the silver ferrule--

Great whip addict minds think alike! By the way, the whip handles amazingly. Just stunning all around. Joe is the man.
