Todd’s and WPG W&G Comparison

Post by wild_weasel »

Hello,

Where are some side by side photo of my Todd’s (left) and WPG original W&G (right) bags. The Todd’s bag is a spot on copy and I am very satisfied with both. The only noticeable difference is that the Todd’s bag is made of a courser canvas, there is also a difference in the snaps.

Both bags at 10" wide, 3" deep, and 9"tall at front / 16"tall at back flap open.

There was a SNAFU a couple of years ago when Todd had a run of bags that were too short in length. Glad to see that his current bags hit the mark. Looks great!

I'm sure you've seen this already, so please don't take my post here as a degradation to yours. I just want to simply point out some other differences as well between the two.

One of the big "nuances" of the two bags is, of course, the side disc. Granted, it's not seen all that prominently on screen much, but when it is, it's a very prominent feature. The original Mark VII's have a light grey disc, while Todds has a black disc. Todds disc, however, in my opinion, is made more durable which is a big plus in my book and is riveted on strong. But the color is what sets the two apart and I do wish that they could be colored differently to more reflect the original. Also, the same goes with the O-rings for the strap - Todds are black, the originals are a grey. In my honest opinion, if Todd were to change the colors of these two items as well as put plain brass snaps on them, he would have an absolute clone (albeit the canvas material that wild_weasel mentioned) of the Mark VII bag.

But for $30, I would recommend no other bag than Todds as far as replicas go. Also, as an aside, he's got something going for him that I've read the bags offered by Magnoli do not - his bottom drainage vents are real and useable, while the ones on the Magnoli bag are fake and sewn onto the bottom for aesthetic purposes. I've only read about this, so if I am wrong, I welcome a correction as I am committed to supporting Magnoli and his products and don't want to be misleading people on a product of his if I, or someone else through a correction, can help it. :TOH:

Keep in mind that there are variances between actual bags of the era. It was wartime and more than one company produced these bags. You will fund variances between snaps, rings, vent configurations, and more. There's a whole section on the main site that covers it.
