WOW!
"Sweet Molasses" says it RIGHT!
That beauty is absolute, syrupy goodness!
Michael, one day I hope I get to visit you...
and something tells me that if I am ever lucky enough to do so, that when I'm on my way out the door at the end of my visit, I'll feel like I had just had the pleasure of having been invited to visit the REAL Professor Henry Jones Jr. (if he had been real)

Michael, that thing is beautiful! I'm extremely jealous! One of your finest pieces of "gear", and that is saying a lot, since you have some of the best gear of anyone here!
Great buy!

Nice find, Michael. So much better even than the original ideas that were being kicked around.

Michael,
Congratulations on such a wonderful addition to your collection. How appropriate that it found you and is now supporting your adventure gear! Glad to hear that you won't be storing any canes in this great example of classic furniture.

Must be hard for her to be living with, how does one say it? An obtainer of Indy collectibles.Tundrarider wrote:Don't want it to get "too busy." (My Sweetie already thinks it's too busy, though she's too kind to say so! She is not fond of clutter, Michael

That's a gorgeous piece! Where in Southern California did you find it? Or, since I probably live pretty close to you now, what's your address so I can "borrow" yours?

Re: My "Screen Reminiscent" antique Hall Tree
Yep, the Plow and Hearth piece is nice, but can't hold a candle to a real piece.
Cool to think of the history of the hats, coats, cane, umbrellas, etc. that have graced your piece over the years. From where were people coming and going when they grabbed a hat or hung up a coat.
Or is this piece from Pottery Barn ala the Friends episode when Rachel kept telling Phoebe their new furniture was from the "time of yore."
I love the Larkin Desk too. Replaced a white cabinet I believe? Gee, that doesn't make me sound stalkerish, does it?

Indiana Jeff

Michael, I'm in Orange County now, so it's an easy drive! Dejah loves antiques, too, so I'm sure we'll find our way down there sooner or later.

I think that's perhaps the second best gear display stand I've ever seen... second only to the coat rack my wife bought for me a couple of years ago. That thing is awesome! I also love the other gear items in your drawer that look like they've been there since 1936 or 1956... I'm actually green with envy.

Re: My "Screen Reminiscent" antique Hall Tree
I know exactly how you feel. Not too many people get this when I tell them how I feel about antiques - I always wonder about the people who owned them first or all the previous owners who possessed them before me. What did the go through, what did they experience? Who did they love and who did they hate? Did they have a favorite fedora? Did they have the same aspirations and concerns that I have?Tundrarider wrote:Thank you, Rendering Fisk! That's a very high compliment! Glad you liked the "junk box" and it's accumulated items. That's one of the cool things about this site; sharing our stuff with others who appreciate these things. I've had loads of people come through my house without a comment when they see these things. If I were a stranger to my home and it's contents and happened to walk in, I'd flip out! I'd have to handle and examine every item.
What were the previous owners of these items thinking and feeling during their current events that are now our shared history? I'm not saying that these items "speak" to me, but I feel a connection to those people through these items.
I know exactly what you're saying. Having an appreciation of old things makes us better people.I guess what I'm saying is I'm glad I'm the kind of person who likes the things I like.... (Does that make sense? )
Thanks for sharing, I would love to see more of what other things you have!

What a great acquisition and I'm glad that you found room for your new furniture. The hall tree is terrific and the desk is a great find, too. I was just in Los Angeles county last weekend. One night turned into four with a car breaking down on a Friday night.

I haven't commented on this yet, but it really is an awesome piece, Michael. My parents have one very similar to this in their house, that I feel I might be getting today if I play my cards right...

Re: My "Screen Reminiscent" antique Hall Tree
No need for the story to be saved...I'm sure the mods would appreciate not having multiple Hall Tree threads running rampant!
Back when I was a kid my parents used to drag me all over the world hunting their "little bits of junk" they called it Antiquing. This was the first piece they ever bought. It is now located in one of my parents houses that they are selling. It was moved out to the garage so the hardwood floors could be sanded and we just happened to be making a boat trip over there so I asked my mom if I could have it. She said yes!!! I'm not going to use it as an exclusive Indy display (though I do like yours), rather I'm going to hang my hat and jacket of the moment on it when I get home, just as it was used back when it was brand new!

A VERY nice (future) acquisition, Travis!
It clearly doesn't belong in a Museum... it belongs in your front hallway!
