Custom made fedora by hat maker
I found in my city a hatmaker. I think he could do a ROLA fedora for me. What i should to tell him (sizes of ribbon, brim, crown or maybe other things?)?

Do a little homework and read the main site and the stickies at the top of this forum. The answers are all here. Dig in!7th_son wrote:I found in my city a hatmaker. I think he could do a ROLA fedora for me. What i should to tell him (sizes of ribbon, brim, crown or maybe other things?)?

Well, if you want the specs of the movie hat, they're on the main indygear.com page as Bink says. I would suggest however, that if you're going for a custom hat, you use the given dimensions as the basis for a crown height and brim width that works for you.
But basically: 5 1/2" open crown height, 1.5" ribbon, 2 3/4" x 2 1/2" dimensional cut brim.

May we ask who the hatmaker is?
Re: Custom made fedora by hat maker
I don't know him/her. And i think you don't know him, too. Why? Because i live in Ostrów Wielkopolski, Wielkopolska, Poland. This town has 80 thousand of citizens. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Ostr%C3%B ... CCkQ8gEwAA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; But are there any special things in this hat? Something that should i tell the maker?

Again, if you read the indygear.com main page, you can find out everything you ever wanted to know about the hat.
But it's basically a 30's style fedora with a tall, straight sided crown, and a dimensional brim.

Ostrów Wielkopolski, Wielkopolska, Poland! Do you mean the same Ostrów Wielkopolski, Wielkopolska, Poland, that is near Zacharzew and Wiesocko Wielkie? Not only do I know it, but...yeah you got me, I have no idea where that is. I just got those names off of the map.
Anyhoo, would LOVE to see a Indy hat by a hatmaker we're not familiar with! Make sure you post pics when you get it. Its so cool to see different artists interpretations of the same thing.

Przepraszam ... o głupich odpowiedzi rzucony na ciebie.
Twoje angielski jest bardzo dobry!
jest myślenie, że:
Specyfikacje Ford nosił kapelusz rzeczywiste są podobno w następujący sposób-
Rozmiar: 7 ¼ (rozmiar 58 europejskich)
Crown: 5 i pół (5,5) cm
Brim (przód i tył): 2 ¾ (2.75) cali
Brim (boki): 2 5 / 8 (2.625) cali
Ribbon: 1 ½ (1.5) cala (39mm)

Re: Custom made fedora by hat maker
One thing that concerns me is whether or not this hat maker has the correct block. If not, when all is said and done, you may have a hat that is dimensionally correct, but not quite the right shape. For the amount of money you may spend, there are proven hat makers right here who get it exactly correct. Then again, exchange rates and shipping may make your local guy less expensive.
Re: Custom made fedora by hat maker
Oh... You scared me a little bit! So can you tell me about right block (sizes etc.) ? And what about right color? How to describe it? If it is important i've the same head size like Ford (european 58).

Re: Custom made fedora by hat maker
Just bring the guy a picture of the hat. But look, not every hatter has the right block for an Indy hat. It needs to be tall and straight sided.
Re: Custom made fedora by hat maker
Exactly. It will be difficult to achieve the right Raiders look without the right block. You will need a straight sided block with very little to no taper... or even have some reverse taper built in. If your hatter has such a block, you might be able to get a decent Raiders hat made.

Re: Custom made fedora by hat maker
If the hatters has been around a long time, ask for vintage blocks from the 1920s-1930s. Steve Delk (of Adventurebilt hats, the makers of the Crystal Skull fedoras) has said many time vintage blocks that have tall, straight sides have produced nice looking Raiders hats without any changes to the block.
But in my opinion, if you have a local hatter that can make you your own personal bespoke hat, go for it. It might not be 100% accurate to the movies, but it'll mean so much more being something you found and designed yourself.

Indiana Jeff

Re: Custom made fedora by hat maker
Hmm... So it ain't as easy as i fought... This hatmaker shop ain't new for sure.. I think it's 30-40 years old shop. Now i should go to this guy and ask him about block. But i won't do it, until i'll have some free money, because if he has right block, i'll order fedora immediately. And what means tall? How tall should be block to call block tall?

Re: Custom made fedora by hat maker
Give the hatter the measurements listed above and he will likely be able to pick out a block that will work best. Take as many pictures of the hat you want to replicate with you. This thread (FAQs from the top of the Fedora Section) will provide you many pictures.viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10903" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
