Collar Shaping

I did a quick search and didn't find anything on this already. I was hoping someone else might have had some success with this and have advice to offer.

I got my LC pre-distressed cow about five or six weeks ago, and one of the first things I noticed out of the package was that the collar seemed so big.

I looked at the pictures on Wested's site, and at the movie, and noticed that the collars on those jackets looked smaller, but that they also had a roll to them, which would make them seem not as large due to their pointing more down than out. My collar lays flat, and looks (as a friend of mine commented today) like something out of the seventies it's so wide.

Has anyone tried to shape their collar by adding a roll to it? I've put Pecard's on mine, and run it through the dryer several times to soften it, and have no idea what would be a good way to make the inner part of the collar stand up and the corners point more down.

I'll try to post pictures of what I'm talking about. I should at least be able to get screen grabs from LC of what I want it to look like.

I could have sent the jacket back to Wested first thing, I'm sure, but at the time I thought I would be able to compensate for the size. Now I'm left with the option of either reshaping the collar somehow, or having it's size decreased professionally, which I would rather not have to do.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

It does work. Another variation to the above is what Lee did. You roll the whole collar as MK mentioned above and then band it with a rubberband. I need to take a picture to show it. But it works.

I'll try the "folding fix", but as that was for stiff collars, I'm not sure it'll work on mine. Mine is very soft. So soft, the inner part doesn't seem to want to stand up much, so it all lays down. But, I'll try anything to solve it.

The LC collar in the film IS pretty huge though. It's the major LC difference other than bigger pockets I think. Do you think yours is bigger proportionally to the rest of it than the film jacket?

I'm not sure. It seems larger, but when I look at the movie the collar has more shape to it, which is what I'm trying to acheive. Mine is laying flat, while in the movie, it curls down more. When I can get mine to acheive that, it looks somewhat better, but it won't stay in that position.

I think it depends on the leather. My goat has a nice curl to it, my cowhide won't curl.

I found a post about this on here somewhere,,,,don't remember where ,,,basically it said to fold the collar over backwards and lay a book or something heavy on it for a day or so and that cures it..........at least that is how I remember it......

Okay, I've got it laying across my dining room table, collar folded back with some large books laying on it. I did this early last night after work, and after a few hours I tried it on to see if there was any difference, and there was a little bit. Hopefully by tomorrow or so it will be enough of a difference to keep me from taking flight next time the wind picks up.

Okay, two days worth of being under heavy books gave it a bit of a break in the collar. It's not as much as I would like, but it's at least not sticking straight out to the sides like it was before. It now goes down a bit before laying flat, so I don't feel like I should be wearing a mood ring with it.

So it looks better. Still, I won't be getting the LC collar on the next one. I may even see about getting Peter to replace it, at my expense, after it warms up some and I'm not wearing it. Since it's a fairly new jacket, getting a Raider's collar put on then Pecarding it should look okay.

I just wanted to sing the praises of Wested's quality of service here real quick. I sent them an email asking their advice on breaking in my collar a bit more, and also asked them how much it would cost to replace the collar with a Raiders collar. I've had the jacket for a couple of months now, worn it, put Pecards on it, and broken in the collar some so I have no problem paying for a purely optional service.

I got an email back from Gerry this morning offering to replace the collar for no charge, except what it will cost to ship it back and forth. Even though I plan on wearing the jacket for another month or two till it warms up here, he just asked me to let him know when it was coming and he'd take care of the rest.

Just another in a long list of reasons why Wested is so great to buy from.

Grendel, when you send it back make sure to mark on the box in bold marker that you're sending it back for Repairs.

I have a Tod Wested in cow and the collar is fine.
It must be diffrent from jacket to jacket because
Mine is just great, but ive heard others feel like the collar
on their jacket is like a wing. It could also be personal prefrence.

From talking with Gerry over email, it sounds like they've heard from more than a few people on the size of their LC collars. I would imagine it is more of a matter of taste, though. After breaking in mine a bit more, I do like it better, due to it's now folding more and not seeming as large. I'm still looking forward to having the smaller Raider's collar, though.

It seems the collar of the LC jacket keeps starting discussions..;-).. I decided to order the LC jacket WITH the large collar, since the jacket in the Last Crusade looked awesome and I realized an accent on the 70's is my style...
But a lot of people (especially newbie's) are curious about the difference in looks. How do the collars differ relatively to, let's say, the shoulders. Would it be possible to make two pictures? A 'before' and a 'after' pic?
(If not, no big deal...:-D)

I think the main difference with the LC collar, in my experience anyway, is that it is not only larger, but it tends to sit high up on the back of the neck.
Just picture an Elvis jumpsuit from the 70s
I think the larger collar looks great, but when it sits that high up, it doesn't look like screen accurate, IMHO
Maybe Peter can do something to make the collar sit lower on the LC.

You're right, it does sit up higher in the back. That part reminds me of jackets you see made specifically for cold weather, where the collar provides more protection from the elements. That part of it doesn't look that bad to me, but not great for that kind of jacket or for where I live in North Texas. We just don't get enough cold weather here.
