If you could only have....
I am truly amazed at the large quantity of excellent designers that are
producing such quality workmanship.
So I guess I was thinking about a note I got in which the person said, "I'll
bet you a red nickel this will not be your last hat!"
So, if you could only have one hat which one would it be?

Re: If you could only have....
This is a good hypothetical question you have asked, but with all of us here, i don't think we can ever have just one of anything. If I had to say, it would be the one i already own, 2006, pure beaver, Ford felt, Raiders, s.o.c. A.B. However, it will have a brother here in a couple of months. It's gonna be a Penman gray clipper. See, ...can't have just one.

Although I also enjoy my Penman gray train traveler, if I could only have one fedora (or any hat for that matter), it would be my Adventurebilt Crystal Skull brown fedora:

I would go with my ABD CS that both Marc and Steve worked on. this way I could have both their work.

Re: If you could only have....
The hat that I like the most, that is in my posession at the moment is my re-blocked Henry by Steve. Everything comes together with that one. The hat was nice before, but when he added his own personal touch, Raiders block, etc., this Henry has become THE one. The felt is the right blend of rabbit/beaver felt and the thinness of it sends it over the top. Maybe the best bang for the buck all around.

Re: If you could only have....
If we're talking about one Indy fedora, limited to my current collection - no brainer! My AB Well of Souls from Steve.
However, if you want me to pick one fedora from my entire collection, Indy or otherwise - you may as well as a father to pick one of children to keep! Which is to say that while I could part with some of my hats (my children's friends, if you will), there are numerous that are just too much a part of me to let go.

I don't care who makes it, styles it, or whether it is rabbit/beaver; if I could have only one fedora, it would simply look the part and be capable of not tapering/shrinking over its lifetime of wear.

Re: If you could only have....
Of the lids I've actually had on my head, and for the life I'm leading, a PB "bulletproof" Indy. I wear my fedoras every day, I work mostly outdoors and I'm in and around vehicles and construction equipment all the time. I love the lighter, floppier felts, but I see them more as dress or "town" hats. Snow, mud, rain, dust, oil, grease, sweat... I need a hat that can take all that and that I won't go into vapor-lock about when it gets another character mark.
Of course, if I win that lottery...

Re: If you could only have....
I find myself not wearing my Indy hats too often anymore. I'm actually thinking about selling one. Anyway, it would have to be either my sahara AB or my charcoal Penman. Those two are worn most often. The sahara AB is worn with light colored clothing and the charcoal Penman with dark colored clothing. It would be really difficult to chose between the two. But to be honest, I'd probably end up keeping the black Penman John made for my wedding. I don't wear it often, but how could that not be the one to keep if I could only keep one.

I would have to say my pre-Crystal Skull Adventurebilt because for the first time in my life Jones dressed like me and not the other way around.

Re: If you could only have....
I can claim the same thing with the CS grey travel hat. Steve used 'my' block to make that one that he's used for years to make MY AB's.
That said, mine would probably be either my moss green AB or my old 'Ford felt' AB I wear almost everyday anyway.

Of the hats I woen it would be my Fed IV. Of any hat out there, it would be either a Penman or AB Raiders, probably in a beaver/rabbit blend.

Re: If you could only have....
My very old beaver AB. I tried so hard to distress it to get the SoC look and it wouldnt budge. Now, I see that every year it is naturally morphing slowly into that cairo hat I fell in love with on film with just natural wear and tear.
I have lots of other hats I have collected over time but hardly ever wear them....its always ol realiable AB.

Re: If you could only have....
For me it's the amazing high quality dorfman I picked up in Disneyland - it's the only official hat, and made with such excellent detail as 100% wool felt. It has the amazing ability to warp and shrink - and when it gets rained on, it gets these very cool rain dots all over it. IF there can be only one hat in my collection, it should be the Dorfman wool!

I was about ready to scream: "Is there a hatter in the house? Someone, please get this man an Akubra and a glass of water!" I felt this sharp pain in my left arm and numbness in my chest when I read that.nicktheguy wrote:For me it's the amazing high quality dorfman I picked up in Disneyland - it's the only official hat, and made with such excellent detail as 100% wool felt. Agreed. My one hat has become an old friend I rarely go without, though in my case it's morphing into the idol grab hat.BendingOak wrote:Michaelson wrote:Told ya so.Gorak wrote:. Re: If you could only have....
Well the hats I have (and, good Lord there are many -- too many according to my wife, but....) are kind of like Will Rogers veiw of people -- "I never met a man I didn't like!" I have met a few hats I didn't like, however I like all of the hats I have in my collection. So, 'if I could only have....' -- it would be the one on my head at the time the question was presented to me! Now how is this for a cop out to the question at hand ? W>

I really love my Penman Beaver CS. Never leave home with out it! Don't own too many hats and don't need to...My Penman will be with me for a long, long time and it can take handle whatever I throw at it.
