My Nylon Pocket Whip

Post by fenris »

I had some scraps of nylon cord lying around the house and decided to make a mini bullwhip.

It's only 2-ft long and only has the core and 1 overlay... I didn't want to make it too thick. The core is 3pcs of chain cord. It's a 6-plait. I still can't get the hang of making a turkshead knot, so I just basically wrapped some nylon cord over the butt of the handle and transition. The fall is about the same length of the whip itself... I used a twisted fall because I find it's better.

Here it is next to a blank CD... it's tiny, but it cracks!

Still trying to learn... as you can see there are gaps in the plaiting.

The gaps are because your total strand width was not enough. Maybe and 8 plait would have been sufficient for that?

Multiply the diameter of what you are plaiting over by 4.5, then divide that number by however many strands you want to use,

the result is the width each strand will need to be.

I use twisted nylon falls for two of my whips, except for wrapping I like them , very strong.

Yeah, but I think 8-plait would've been too much... and I was just using some leftover nylon scraps. I wasn't even really sure I could make a whip so small... it was worth the hour I put into it.

I was even surprised this little whip could crack. Well, indoors anyway. Outdoors you can hardly hear it. So I guess it is right to assume that shorter whips = softer cracks; long whips = louder cracks.

Try to use a single nylon strand for the fall, ( with inner strands in it still ) , the fall looks a lot larger than the cracker so the

energy may not be transferred efficiently that way.

Oh, this isn't paracord. It's just some ordinary nylon cord with no inner strands.

Oh , it looked like paracord from where i'm sitting, anyway just try using one strand for the fall, it might work better it might not.

I can't... not much heft to it. It's too floppy.

Anyway, the whip does crack. But it has this higher tone to it compared to my longer whips. My 7-ft whip cracks the loudest... the 4-ft has a decent crack, but nothing compared to the 7ft. Since this is only 2ft, I'm even surprised it cracks at all since there isn't that much whip to form the loop. This one I can really crack indoors without worrying of it hitting any breakable objects... Although, it's pretty hard to do the forward flick with it.

Just try it, if it doesn't help then revert back to single, the worst that can happen is it doesn't work ;)
