A real whip for a 12 year old: Experts, suggestions please
The son of my wife's best friend had a costume whip from Disney that recently met its end at the hands of his toddler brother. I suggested we get him a real whip as a replacement and I'd teach him to crack it (as best I can anyway).
Can any of you suggest a good, easy-to-crack whip for a 12 year old? It should resemble an Indy whip.
Thanks in advance.

Can we have a price range? Otherwise we can give you information overload.
A great place to start is a nylon whip. Huntress is my choice for nylon bulls. Affordable and doesn't require as much care as leather. He's waiting time is about a month or so typically.

Well, hopefully less than $200.

Off the top of my head, I'm not aware of any leather whips under $200 that will give great performance and longevity. It sounds like nylon might be a good choice for you.
I suppose you could check for a used leather whip.
What other info are you looking for when looking for this whip?

Both of my kids own a Steve Huntress nylon "baby bull" 3 ft bull whip, and they are great! Heck, my oldest won the science fair with his 2 years ago. I am about to upgrade him to a nylon 5 footer from Steve for his birthday though

Sounds like a nylon whip might be the way to go. The kids is an Indiana Jones fan, not a gearhead, so it doesn't have to be SA.

No time like the present to teach them that SA is not a requisite for being a gearhead!!!!

Striving for SA is my definition of a gearhead. Otherwise, we'd all be running around in brown nylon windbreakers and DP hats.

I can only praise his work so far. I know a lot of other people like his work also.

Isn't Todd's offering shorter whips? I think they have a 4ft now.
Re: A real whip for a 12 year old: Experts, suggestions plea
Fenris, true. They are nice costume whips (not an insult.) But I believe our friend is looking for a whip designed to crack. While Todd's whips do crack, they are designed for looks and won't last very long. A good nylon whip will cost more but with stand the abuse of a new whip cracker.

Is that whip built like all his previous? If the quality has improved then fine. Otherwise it doesn't make sense to use a costume whip to do serious whip cracking. There's been issues with these in the past.
If they have improved ,he'd probably need longer then 4 ft. That's short and requires fast reflexes and more knowledge typically.

7-8 ft. i found best when i first started, it wasn't so long that your motions needed to be perfect to keep from hitting yourself,WhipDude wrote:Is that whip built like all his previous? but it wasn't so short that you need to move very quickly to avoid it hitting itself or getting tangled.
If you can't find one for less than $200 that resembled an indy whip, get a nylon one, they'll look fine enough like an indy,
be fairly cheap, and will require just about no keep up work.
I'm sure someone already recommended this, so i second/third/whatever this.

I got a 4' nylon snakewhip from rjallan70 that I've been very pleased with. His nylon whips are pretty reasonably priced and I don't recall ever seeing any negative comments about his quality or service (which was top-notch from my viewpoint).

Rjallan70 is not making whips anymore. Rhett Kelley now has the nylonwhips.com domain.

Yep. I know classic bullwhips was mentioned up there. I don't recall anything negative either so I'd look into them.
Rhett makes great nylon whips as well. He's also be another person to look into.

Steve Huntress @ Noreast Whips. 6' nylon "Catalyst" bullwhip: $85
http://neawhips.com/catalyst.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Great "starter," good weight, excellent balance, throws straight, ZERO maintenance, (save for popper replacement,) and will take a beating and a half.
If the kid takes to it, they might expand on their collection, but they'll never "Outgrow" this whip.

Giovanni Celeste's 'Little Raider' is a nice lightweight starter whip. Not sure what the current price equates to in dollars.
Re: A real whip for a 12 year old: Experts, suggestions plea
I don't believe Rhett Kelley of cowwhips.com is taking orders at the moment. I may be wrong, but last I checked his blog his list was just too long to be taking more orders for the time being.

I usually start the kids out when they're nine or ten and have them start on my 6 ft Rhett Kelley cowwhip...I got it in 2004 for $87 shipped. I also have a 4 ft leather one from Kyle Schold (does he still chime in?) but the two handle quite differently.riku1914 wrote:http://www.cowwhips.com/order/WhipDude wrote:Yep. For taller kids you could try Tim Bass. He used to make great nylon whips, much thicker than Rhett's (dont know if Bass still makes them). I bought an 8 footer from Tim right after he won a nylon whipmaking competition in Dallas.
