Scratchbuilding a holster

Hey guys.

Being rather cashstrapped, a friend of mine who's got a seamstress girlfriend has graciously said she'll make me a holster using the plan on the site. The only problem I have at the moment, is that I don';t know the dimensions and we don't want to make it either too large or too small given that we only have a limited supply of leather.

If you are talking about the drawing listed on the indygear.com accessories page, it can be found elsewhere on the site (I'm sorry I really don't remember where, but I have a copy of it I can email you if you'd like). If you find that one, then you can print it out at 100% scale. This will take a couple of sheets of paper and some tape, but in the end, you will have a pattern that fits a S&W M1917 PFC from Todd's quite nicely. Sorry can't be of more help or supply photos of the resulting holster, but I am away from the house right now.

Can't go wrong with paper patterns. Once I get the paper pattern down just right I spray adhesive on the back and attach it to some stiff cardboard. Then I cut that out and use the cardboard for tracing the pattern either onto the leather (one offs) or onto wood to make a more durable and permanent pattern for the holster.

You can then sand down the edges and glue a handle on the back and you have yourself a pro wooden pattern.

I used that pattern (downsized it a bit though) to make a small holster for my son. I'm not too handy with a needle and thread, but it turned out nicely anyway. Takes a bit of time though.
