Minor leather alterations person needed...?

Accasionally, I need to alter straps or tack down the handwarmer pockets in a more sturdier way, alter sleeve lengths, etc. Do you know of a good, leather alterations person for little jobs?

I've posted this before, but if you have a military base anywhere near you, 9 times out of 10 you'll find an alteration shop in a nearby town. Most military personnel don't want or like to sew (at least that's the case at the base near me ), and they have small shops that not only work on uniforms, but have a leather jacket expert who will do alterations and/or repairs to jackets for a very reasonable cost.

Most tailors are capable of such work. Get out the phone book and ask around. Just be sure to avoid anyone who sounds uncertain. My local tailor has altered almost ever leather garment I've ever purchased.

Those around here won't mess with leather because they do not have the machines for it, etc.

Well, not only that, but you need someone who knows what they're doing in the first place. Unlike cloth that essentially 'heals' itself when a hole it punched through it, perforated leather remains just that....perforated. Therefore, there can be no mistakes when it comes to sewing on leather. Based on that, true leather workers are craftsman in their field, so you're wise in searching out someone who knows what they're doing.

Scott, the small shop I use is located in Manchester, TN.

It's called Leather Alterations (or something like that. Never really noticed their real name), is open 9-5 central time M,T,TH, and Fri, and 9-12 on Wednesday. I DO mean a small shop. It's on the main street in town, but if you blink, you'll completely miss their door.

Their phone number is 931-728-7511. The name of the lady I've dealt with in the past is Rue Clark, but anyone who answers should be able to help.

You could give them a call and discuss what your needs are to see if they can help you.

I know Indy Dawg did or was going to use them in the past (he's located in Georgia), so they are willing to handle out of town work.

Thanks, Mark. That's all I was expecting. Based on some of the responses last night, it must have been a full moon..? Bad moon rising? Tsunami warning, maybe? I dunno.

Anyway, truth is, we do not have many leather workers in the area, and for sure, none that work on leather jackets, even some of the time. I suppose that it is the nature of it, delicate work and you really get no second chances. As you mentioned, once you punch a hole in the leather, it is there from now on.

Over here its seems hard to find someone willing to take on leather alterations. We have several dry cleaners/alterations type places in this town and none of them would touch leather. I did see another in the next town over that specifically says 'leather alterations' in their window but haven't had the chance to go over and ask. Depends on the machines I guess. But I would have thought if they could handle denim the could handle lambskin?
