Just read Magnoli has a new and improved bowtie out. So might as well show you what my 'old' one looks like...

And oh, boy, are those things hard to tie...

Tying a bowtie can take a bit of practice, but if you get it in your head that it's basically the same as tying a shoestring, it's a bit easier.

Darn it all to heck!

It really looks like you have got the general shape. All you need to do is find the back strand that pull tight the knot in the center. Once you find that and tighten it, just tidy up the bow. Once I discovered that little trick, bow tie tying went from a 30 min ordeal to a 2 minute ordeal! Best of luck!

Half an hour? You got off lucky - took me the better part of an hour to learn how to tie this doggone thing! I think it came out looking halfway decent finally. Thanks, Magnoli for such an excellent tie! ( now I gotta get me a suit...

Solent, that tie looks excellent! I'm afraid mine's a bit lopsided, but out of all my bow ties, this is my first straight-edge bow tie:

My wife's brother and sister ordered this from Magnoli for my Christmas gift, so just got to wear it to church this morning. Great tie, Magnoli! I think I'll wear this for the first day of teaching this semester.

Hollowpond & Nebraska Schulte - thanks! Yeah, mine kept getting a bit lopsided too. I tried to get the center knot pretty snug, then I could pull it one way or the other to center it better on the bow. I think I'll save my bow debut for Easter Sunday ( got my eye on a 3-piece suit to go with it ).

I got my Indy bow tie recently, but haven't had the time to practice with it yet. Yes, I'm also hoping to get three pice suit to go it it too, although didn't Indy wear a tweed jacket with it?

When you tie a bow tie...the secret is do not do it in front of a mirror. Just do it and then adjust it in the mirror. It usually is a 'one taker' everytime this way. Just my two cents. Hope it helps. Now -- one, two, three -- tie away! W>

Solent and Canyon, those are excellent looking ties and outfits!

I actually wore mine for teaching this morning--it's become a part of my regular rotation. I'm surprised for the difference in tying a butterfly bow tie vs. this straight edge. It takes a little more effort, but I like the results. I'll probably change out those hurriedly-tied photos from above for a more recent photo soon.

I don't remember getting flashed with any eyelid messages that day, but the shocked looks on my family and friends' faces when they saw me in a suit and tie was priceless ( I'm generally a t-shirt and shorts kinda guy ), so maybe the eyelid thing isn't too far behind.

Although I've never had a student write it on her eyelids, working in Japanese High School means I've been thrown a few comments like that...
I deal with it in the same way that any decent man would...Smile, look rather bewildered, say "thank you", end class quickly and climb out of the window to escape...Works rather well I've found...

Never any love notes in this day and age...I did have to delete my Facebook account though. I did have one student that brought me strange gifts she had made all the time though. It was sweet...creepy, but sweet.

Yeah, I've seen some of the stupidness that Facebook leaves open to people far too litigious for their own good and lacking brains to deal with the idea that us teachers may have lives outside school..
I'm just glad that Japan uses "Mixi" instead of Facebook for the most part, so it's a rarity that my Japanese students (Or friends actually) will be able to see my Facebook at all.. Mostly a good thing.. (One teacher I worked with got moved from our school for insulting the school on his "Mixi" page though... So it's the same, just more "Japan-oriented" I think)..
Baffling...
As for love notes... Agreed... No one writes them much anymore (Although I did always get nice letters from my Elementary kids.. They "love" me, apparently... And drew me a nice picture of me looking like Wolverine/Monkey man, it's on my Facebook)... And I've never gotten an Apple... But they're expensive here, so fair enough I think..
The times, they are a'changin'...
My suits on the other hand aren't, and I'm more than happy staying "stuck" in 1920's fashion... Much nicer place to be!

Enigma, both of those bow ties look quite sharp! Not everyone can pull off wearing a bow tie, but you certainly wear them well!

I'm liking the Magnoli tie more and more--it's now second only to my Dead Sea Scrolls bow ties. Here's a photo from my webcam in my office this morning after my class--a little better tied than previously:
