Is my Crystal Skull Adventurebilt fading?

Post by Bruce Wayne »

I receiveed it on July 5th of last year. The very first day I wore it I was at a dig in my neck of the woods & a sudden summer storm came & soaked it straight thru! Byt he next morning it was dry, so I wore it again to the dig. I wore it the better part of all last summer in all weather. I wore in while mowing the yard, I wore it for ten to twelve days at the previously mentioned archaeology dig, I even wore it while I went out to dinner a few times. Needless to say, 8 months on, I have worn it at least 2-3 days every week. In September, I recieved my Raiders Adventurebilt, but this hat has seen nowhere near the amount of use my Crystal Skull fedora has.

Anyways, here is a pic I took a few days ago. The newer Raiders is on the left, my Crystal Skull is on the right.

Sure, they all do when they're used a lot, and in the sun.

Mine always have.

At this year's Queen Mary Summit, I noticed in comparison to other fedoras that my CS AB which I received in summer 2008 had faded. Probably from 3 excavations under the hot Israel sun and daily wear the rest of the time. Personally, I like that it's just part of the process of making the hat my own, like a thumbprint of my time wearing it. I'd say enjoy the rewards of natural distressing from actual adventures. :TOH:

Best wishes,
NS

Don't get me wrong, I am not worried or concerned that it is fading. I was just curious if it was indeed fading, or if it is just a difference of color from one run of felt to another.

Thanx!!!

If your picking up dust. there may be some remaining on your hat. Even a good brushing wont get off. Like posted before, If it spends a lot of time in the sun it will fad a tad. This is why they start out just a tad to dark for a Indy hat. The first year or so every hat will fad a little. Steve, makes his hats for the long haul.

Heck, if you keep out in the sun with it whole heartedly, it'll continue to fade over time! I have some hats that are practically a different color under the brim than they are on top! Still, it's just the color, and not the integrity of the felt.

Frankly, fading occurs without any great exposure. Obviously, the more exposure it gets to the elements, the more dramatic it will be.

At first, the little curve that started to develop at the front of my brim (from how I put it on) on my Fed IV Deluxe worried me. "Oh noes! I r not S.A.!" or "I'm hurting my hat, nooooooo!"

Then, after thinking a bit (and some reassurance from Michaelson) I realized that it was just part of what made it MY hat. And now I look at the little abnormality with fondness. :D
