This a hat I made as a gift for Alyce from http://www.thehatmuseum.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Its made from a vintage Borsalino Felt raw body.

No not at all.

Thank you and everyone else for the kind words.Jessica Rabbit wrote:John,
That is simply beautiful. You are so talented. How did you become a hat maker? I've always been fascinated by people like yourself who have a talent and are able to turn it into a way of life. That is just a wonderful gift you have and it is a gift to us to enjoy it. I just wish there was a way to have you make a hat for Todd without it costing so much.
It's simply wonderful.
Best,
Kelly
How I became a hat maker. Long story I'm sure someone could post the thread that has my story how I I got into the whole thing. Maybe it could be add to the vendors section on the main site so everyone could find it. I'm one of those who can't seem to use the search function very well.
If the measurement are accurate. He really has a very large size head. I would have to have a special block and flange made. If he wanted a dimensional cut brim then there is that added expense because I would need to have a jig made for that as well. Then we have to think about the trimming. Extra long sweatband, larger liner and I just hope that the over size bodies I use would be large enough.
I have only had one guy want a hat larger than my largest block. One in three years. todd is two blocks bigger than him.
Wish I could do it but I would never use the block, flange or jig ever again. Those two or three would cost more than what I would make on the hat.
I did once have a young man who had a head smaller than my ten year old. A 1 1/4 smaller. He paid for the block to be made special for him so he could buy a hat. I have yet to use that block again. He didn't need to buy a special flange because I could use a larger flange for his brim. Easier to go down than up.
If I could borrow a block and flange from someone like Steve. Then it would be about the cost of shipping and the parts.
I'm sure you can tell that there is a lot throwing things off.

Nice. Will she wear it open crown, or will a bash be put in? I can see it looking great on a female both ways...

Re: Special hat
I think going to Steve is a good idea since he already mad him a hat. He must still have blocks and flanges for his size. FYI, steve was collecting vintage blocks for some time before making hats. Most of my sets are custom made.

John, I looked back through the archive, and last it stood as of last April was that we were waiting on a short, basic write up from you. Get that in to us and we'll be glad to put it up!BendingOak wrote: I'm sure the admin will get me up on the main page some day.

I'm sorry it must have been sent to the wrong e-mail or something. I sent a write up and a couple of photos. I'll send you what i had sent before or maybe update it and send again. Where should I send it so not to have it sent to the wrong place or something?

Even the photos? That's where the mistake was. I sent it to a e-mail address ( can't remember which ) thinking that sending it via: pm would not be a good way for a photo or two.

Well, drop Mike a PM ask him the best vehicle to get your material to him. He may have his own preference, but he's the point of contact for this.

I will thank you. I can't really remember who's e mail I sent it to. I just assumed to send it in a e mail. Most like I sent it to the admin. E mail.

Which Mike are we speaking of? I don't want to assume I got the right one because I already dropped the ball before.

Re: Special hat
Just curious, John....do they prefer hats to be left in open crown or do you plan on putting in some sort of bash before shipping?
VERY nice job!

Thank you for getting this back on track. This train not only went off track but fell off the bridge.
Alyce, picked the hat up and the only thing she wanted me to do is snap the brim down. I will post pics of her wearing the hat soon.

Nope. I had just walked in the door after about a 200 mile drive. A drink would have been better. I hate interstates.

Re: Special hat
Now to reply to your statement. I agree, she wears the hat well ( owns it so to speak ) I let her decide what she wanted it creased or not, brim up or down. It's all her choice and I think in suits her very well.
I will be trying to do a silk finish on a modern felt body like this. If it turns out well, I will add it to my offerings. Hopefully it will have a little more body to the felt than this one. It was like trying to make a hat out of a rag. Not fun at all but glade she liked it and I think it came out just fine.

Re: Special hat
That's one thing I have also noticed on vintage Borsalino's....the lack of 'body'. Mine is extremely comfortable, and holds it's bash and blocked shape well....but you can blow in the thing and it dents. Amazing memory of the felt to return to it's shape, but takes little to nothing to knock OUT of shape.

You should try cutting the brim on it or sewing a sweatband into it.

That hat doe look slick on her John. Open crown was the way to go, but you could almost do a homburg center dent as well and she could pull it off smartly.
