Opinions of Todds Shoulder Bag vs. Magnoli's

Post by DeLoreanDMC81 »

Hey everyone, I was just curious if you could help me out with a question I had regarding the shoulder bag? I am really wanting to get one and can't decide between the Todds Costume one or the Magnoli Clothiers.

So what are your guys' opinions on these bags? I'm sure both are really great, but I'm leaning more towards the one Todds Costume sells. Which one, would you say, has more of a screen accurate appearance to it?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've only seen the Todd's on the photos online, but I'd say that the Magnoli has more SA to it... The Todd's is cheaper, and not bad at all for the price but for screen accuracy I'd say the Magnoli has it...(Wade's straps help of course...).

I like my Todd's bag. I carry all kinds of things in it and have found it to be very useful and versatile. I have had a little trouble with some of the stitching coming apart, though. Perhaps Magnoli's can hold up better. You might also try What Price Glory's site. Seems to me that they had a good offering as well.

Unless I'm mistaken, Todd's bags are supplied by What Price Glory. At least, they were at one time. I own a WPG, and it has served my as a daily bag for several years. It is just starting to show wear now. However, it looks too new and too green for my tastes as part of Indy gear. I have seen one of Magnoli's in person, and I thought it was an real MK VII at first. So, it's got the right look, at least.

greetings,
i have both bags and i prefer todd's bag for two reasons. first, the color of the bag is o.d. green which is the s.a. color. magnoli's bag is more of a shiny tan. it was a couple shades lighter than a brown paper bag. magnoli's bag is a very good quality bag, but to me the color was not right. i re-dyed my bag, but it still didn't turn out to my satisfaction.
second, the size of todd's bag is also just a tad bigger than the other; not by much, just a little. it feels to be the correct size for me. because of harrison ford's frame in raiders, the bag always looked bigger on screen in relation to actual, real life specs in relation to my frame. i'm about 6'-2'' and 205lb. the magnoli bag just looks small against me. also, todd's bag material is really soft to the touch. durable yet soft. i hope this was of some help.

I have Todd's bag and I think it's great. So far haven't had any trouble with the stitching coming out. I personally think Todd's bag is closer in color to what we see on screen. It looks like the bag in Raiders and TOD, especially Raiders IMO.

Great question. I was in the same boat as you are ](*,) in couple of years ago. Might I offer you this advise. I own a Todd's bag I like it very much, I don't own a Magnoil bag but I do have other stuff from him and his work is amazing.  :notworthy:

My hands down absolute favorite is the MK VII bag that What Price Glory sells! Also it's seventy+ years old and smells like it. Then as for being SA it's the real deal (what Indy has) man you can't get any other MK VII replica thats more SA than WPG's.

Might I also suggest getting a strap from Wade Egan as well. Top notch in my book.

It's really up too you for what you like, there are so many vendors you really can't go wrong. We all have our likes and dislikes screen accurate or everyday use etc.

I hope this helps but like I said they are a lot to choose from you really can't go wrong!

I agree 100%. I think the color for Todd's bag is spot on for Raiders. Mine is well built and I've never had 1 problem with it. I carry it with me often and it's with me every day at least even if it's only in the car holding the check book, cell phone, CS flashlight, gloves, knife, .38 snubby and cleaning rod, etc.

I have a few of Todd's straps as well and like them all, and 3 different styles of buckles. The newest one is the thinnest and shiniest and has grown on me to become my favorite.

I have a Magnoli's bag that I have used nearly every day for the last three years and it has been great. When it wears out, I will probably order another. It was a bit stiff to begin with but quickly softened and became "my" bag. I don't have a Todd's bag but do have a Todd's strap and it has been great also.

Best,

From my experience, Tony's bag is very sturdy and just about indestructible, while Todd's is more SA.

Hey guys, I just want to start off by saying thank you so much for your valued information, it is very much appreciated and helpful!

After considering the options and reading what everyone had to say, I went ahead and ordered Todds shoulder bag. The reasons I went with his are:

1. For all the stuff you get, it was a good price.
2. The one from Magnoli's is a little too tan for my tastes... I like the green color on Todd's much more
3. Todd and his wife are really nice people to chat with over the phone
4. Both Todd and his wife do so much for us Indiana Jones fans, I really want to continue supporting them and making sure they stay in business
5. Last but not least, Todd's shop is in the good 'ol USA, so that makes it a little easier to contact him or return something vs. sending it back to New Zealand. lol

Again I appreciate everyone's help and when the bag arrives I'll be sure to post some pictures on here. Thanks guys!

Did all three of your buckles come from Todd?

Yeah Noah, they did. The first one I ever got was kinda aged looking, with a slight patina and dull. The second one was similiar in size, but somewhat shinier, and the latest one is rather thin, but shiny and IMO looks spot on to the film and makes the strap look better around the buckle/slider than the others.

Maybe I can take some photos and post those to show the differences, since we're all into those kinda of details. :TOH:

I don't think you would have gone wrong either way. Color is your choice, so I'm glad that you are happy with it. I own both and use the Todd's/WPG bag with and upgraded strap that has softened with age and use. My Magnoli bag hangs for reference, but is a good choice, too, so you really can't go wrong. Magnoli's price includes shipping, I believe world wide, and his customer service is no less than Todd's, which I value highly.

Pictures would be great Raidersbash! :TOH: The one I have from Todd is really dull. The buckles in the films are shiny.

If the new ones are shiny, I certainly would like to get one. :)

So here are a couple quickie shots.

The dull pewter one is the first, the one in the middle is shinier and the 2nd, and the 3rd generation is on the other end: shiny and more detail on the bag strap edges...

I'll try to take some later against an indy shirt, but no promises.

I need some help. I own a Todd's bag and the black disc came off - I need replacement piece to put the disc back on, but I do not know where to look. Any advice?

The bag is solid, the disc came off after getting slammed in the car door.

I had the same thing happen to my original MK VII! I just put it back on with a rivet setter like this...

And hit the silver rivet with a little flat black model paint. Worked perfect!

If you want it to hold better and not break out of the canvas again you should use either a plastic or leather washer to reinforce it.

You can use a thick water or orange juice plastic bottle and cut out a disc from that. Place it inside the bag between the rivet head and the canvas and you shouldn't ever lose that thing again.

This may help:

Cool! Thanks for the help. I didn't see what kind of hardware originally held the disc on but I am assuming it was not metal. I will get a kit or something locally.

Most of my original MKVIIs have a leather or plastic washer along with the metal disc and they're attached with a copper or steel rivet. You will have to use a large rivet if you're buying online.

Yeah, forgot to mention that. I just reused the leather washer that was on my original.
