My Wested - washed goat

I was looking to get a Wested for a long time now, not as a replacement for my Coyle's but just to have another variation of this jacket. I was able to pick this one up second-hand from another COW member.
Below are some photos I had taken, the first shows the Wested overtop the Coyle's, and the last one I am wearing my backup Indiana Jones hat since my Henry is off to John Penman for a reblock.

it lookes to be a special ROLA of the rack jacket. you look happy and so you should be. it's a very nice jacket indeed. if you ever decide to go another route with wested? not that you need another jacket. but if you do? get a jacket made by them in the barn. they are different in both cut, details and construction. but still this jacket is very nice and should live thru lots of 'adventures'.

Being a part of this club has taught me to never say never with buying more gear - so perhaps down the road I will look into a custom jacket.
Yes, it is an off the rack jacket but I have NEVER had a problem properly fitting into OTR stuff. The heavier construction makes this more appropriate to wear in colder weather so I look forward to wearing it as often as possible this winter.
How do you feel it looks on me as far as fit? I have a friend who knows someone who works with leather that could modify the jacket for fit if needed. It is a little longer than my Coyle's which means it overlaps the MkVII a little, other than that I feel comfortable in it. I fell asleep wearing it last night

yes, I thought so. do NOT get me wrong. I only said it because there is just that little special extra thing about having a jacket made by them in the barn and I think all will appreciate that feeling.

the fit looks wonderfull. it will shrink and mold to your body. have you thought about soaking it abnd let it dry 80% and then put it on and wear it completely dry? I do not think you will be unhappy with the result. the skin IMO is freakin awesome. put on raiders and look at the jacket when Ford sits behind the wheel of the tuck.

you scored well with this jacket. awesome. can't wait to se it together with the rest of your gear.

Thanks Holt, coming from you I can take your word to the bank.
Hot or cold water? Yes, I did consider soaking it.
I have also looked at Magnoli's jacket for the future - not counting price, which would be a overall better investment as far as accuracy Magnoli or Wested?
Part of the fun of this hobby is buying the gear and you're right, I shouldn't be needing another jacket but it is good to know I have the options out there.
As soon as I get my reblocked hat from John and my new adventure trousers from Magnoli, I will take a number of full gear shots and share them in the full gear thread. It's totally killing me right now to not have my fedora to try on with this jacket!!!

Yes the washed goat is awesome! Does Magnoli have washed goat?

Is it really as simple a process as washing a goat hide? Or do you wash the goat before you get the hide?

You don't want to mess with a dirty animal, so I think they run them through a car wash then do the deed after.

no . when I think about it..you should not actually need to get another jacket. Okay, why did I say that? let me tell you something. I think today we are pretty spoiled. 10-20 years ago you had just one or two vendors who made these jackets and what you did was to only get one jacket and let it become a part of you and your Indy hobby. sometimes we see these awesome vintage jackets around here now and then and they look SO Indy even though they are not clones of the real Raiders pattern. so what?!? they look SO cool. what I'm trying to say is that today it seems our Indy hobby is different from what it was. we strive for screen accuracy more then ever. that's our main focus in this hobby and yes I have let myself to become one of them. It seems that this is what we have let the Indiana Jones gear collecting hobby become. but in the end....chasing for SA is like chasing a ghost. that I have learned. even the Nowak ''original'' raiders jacket get requests about being modyfied and cut into a something Tony Nowak had was not. Yes, I know, you may find it strange all this coming from me right? I know that I am known as the stitch nazi screen accurate psycho but sometimes it hits me like a ton of bricks about what the H are we doing exactly? it's almost like the Indy hobby has become a contest about who has the most SA gear when we actually should just get what we can afford if ANY and live the spirit of Indy and now and then maby spoil ourselfs with a more SA piece of gear. you'd appreciate it WAY more. These are my true feelings I have gotten over the last few years and I get it everytime I look inside my closet. this post doesn't mean I will stop hunting for SA. that train has passed I'm afraid but I think this means that I will get rid off much of my gear,mainly jackets and only keep a few so I will appreiate them much more.

so, you just keep this jacket and wear it like crazy.

I'm sure many of our seasoned members will recall a time when it was tough to find many of the gear components, even the hat. Newbies, such as myself, were able to walk into this hobby with a plethora of options and price ranges for almost all the gear pieces.
I'm fortunate that I have been able to afford the gear choices I have and am thankful for the vendors who make sure we have such great options out there to purchase.

I was just digging through my eight (gasp) brown leather jackets in my closet, and thinking to myself, "He no nuts, he crazy!"

It looks great! It's been 10 years since I bought a Wested. Enjoy it! It fits, and Holt's rambling post makes loads of sense.

Seriously - I love that jacket.

One you should check out is Gunslinger's posted over on Filmjackets. It's in this cool dusty charcoal SL that he did his grain matching thing? And whatever he's doing with his own pattern is resulting in simply the best Raiders jacket I've seen. I think he deserves credit for actual design work if I understand what he's done.

Personal issues aside? It's the best jacket I've seen - and I've seen the original in uncle George's office. Kurt's outdone anything this old gear-head could ever have considered doing. He's taken this to a new level that is just cool. Check it out.

My everyday jacket is a washed goat LC/CS OTR from 10/2008 . It's indeed a nice and strong leather .
The weak point of my jacket was the under arm seam near the armpit : half an inch of the stitching became undone on both sleeves a few weeks ago . It was easily fixed and reinforced : by unstitching the lining in the same area the repair is barely visible .
I think this is more likely to happen with the LC cut than the Raider's , because of the lower armpits .
But this jacket fits you very well so when you reach the cliff be sure to roll down with your elbows in !

I'm sure that many other people in here could answer that question but here goes. I would do a warm water wash. just zipp it up and grab it by the neck and shower it until she's soaked. or just fill the sink up and put it in there. wringe out all water and let it dry in room temperature....

dry to about 80% and then put it on and let it dry and mold to you body.

That one fits so nice it would be a shame to mess it up.

To start with I would only wet the sleeve and wear it in the last part of the drying phase. Washed goat doesn't really keep the wrinkles like lamb does, unfortunately.

I've been rolling up the sleeves of the jacket, then flexing my forearm muscles, a few times a day, to help keep the wrinkles in the sleeves. Seems to be working so far, but the method with some water should help even more. It looks to be keeping some wrinkles and has even improved the length a little.
I'm highly pleased with this jacket and very thankful that my body has not trouble fitting into OTR garments.
BTW - there is a WWII Reenactment event coming up at the end of this month in my area - hopefully, I can get some amazing 'action' shots with some WWII soldiers and equipment...

It doesn’t matter what water temperature you use. It’ll conform to certain parts of your body. Hot water won’t make it shrink. It’s going to feel like it shrank, but it’ll loosen right up to its original size again after a few days of wear. I’ve got one and I’ve done all sorts of stuff to it. The water is going to make grain pop up in certain areas. Some areas will never show grain. I wore my washed goat every day for about 14 months. It gets a nice patina in areas that are rubbed by fabrics (i.e., your seatbelt). Don’t was it in the washing machine. Bad idea. I’ve done that, too. Hot water will also make the glue in the cuffs come undone. If I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t do anything but wear it. Take the sides in some if you want that slimmer cut. There’s a lot of extra room in the front panels, but you’ll lose an inch or two from the pit to pit distance, not a good idea if you’re the body building type.

It’s the toughest feeling hide I’ve had, and I’ve owned cow and goat, too. When I first saw the leather, I thought, “Man, that’s an Indiana Jones jacket.”

I have barely stopped wearing this jacket since I got it in the mail. It has really grown on me and I really don't intend on doing any deliberate distressing to it since the overall distressed look of the washed leather looks so good.
I'm excited to get my new Adventure trousers from Magnoli so I can try all me new gear on together!

Thanks, that is an awsome jacket, maybe a Novak could be in my future, if he can make me one like that. I just gat a USW SL, and I have to say it's an awsome jacket. The only fault I can find with is it feels heavy, to heavy to wear on a warm day.

I also tried to join the site, but it kept telling one of my answeres was in correct, but would tell me which one. After trying a few times I gave up.

But ya thats one nice lookin jacket.
