Before and After Challenge.

Post by Indy_1971 »

Okay for most of us the shear thought of sitting on our Fedora is an excruciating, painful thought (although we have been told that it improves the look and feel of the felt).
Some of you have done it. Others are thinking about it. There lies the challange.
Before and after. Post em if ya got em!

SITTING? :-k

Well, I think we need a "during" as well, if that's the case. Before, during and after?

I wadded mine up in a ball when I got it. Took no pictures though

That said, it did break it in and made the felt more relaxed. I did it on my Fed, not sure I could see doing it to one of Steve or Marc's hats.... That just sounds painful

I have sat and crunched up my Penman Raiders in beaver many, many times. If I took a picture from when it was new and what it looks like now, no one would be able to see a difference! A Penman hat is truly Bulldog tough! The only difference is that the felt is a little softer and slightly more floppy. That's it.

My hats have been sat on by accident many times... but not by me - by my wife, sis-in-law and kids. My youngest daughter, a toddler, even stepped on my PB. The most abused would have to be the Christy's but only because it's been to the beach with me getting tossed onto the sand and stuff. Retired that one to display duty.

Coming in at 2nd in terms of abuse is the Fed IV... but it does hold the record for having the longest "sat-on" duration. It rolled down the sofa and my sis-in-law accidentally sat on it for more than 30mins!

The PB is the least abused because I consider it my "nice" hat - which means I rarely wear it. Funny thing is, it's the PB that showed signs of abuse... in terms of the ribbon. The PB's ribbon had crease marks after getting sat on.

If sitting on your hat is hard for you to take. You might want to sit down for this one.

A hat from Penman is a top notch hat. No doubt about it!

Well, I have never sat on my fedora as such, but have squashed it into a suitcase before now, which I find has given the crown a zigg zagged look...

I've got a Penman that is my constant companion. I have been out for hours in heavy snow, everything from saturating mists to heavy downpours as far a as rain, have worked for hours under hot sun until my sweat penetrated all the way through it, and had it covered in fine dust and debris and all I ever do is knock the loose dirt off by slapping it against my leg and brush it off with my hat brush. The hat still looks fantastic and I get compliments from complete strangers pretty frequently. I have had guys stop me just to ask where they could get one and I always send them to John's website. Coincidentally and off topic, the hat looks great on my wife too; I've been trying to talk her into getting one for herself :D

I guess I'm not to bright, I haven't sat on my Penman yet, but I thought my experiences might give some testament to the fact that you needn't worry too much about it if you do based on all the other hard use I mentioned. It has been squashed a few times by other objects but not sat on..........yet.

My old Akubra:

When I got my Adventurebilt first thing I did was sit on it, crumbled into a ball and cut the brim with regular scissors eyeballing it. Not the grey Henry, that's for suit use and has to look neat.

When that first happened to my hat, I was totally shocked.

Now, when somebody accidentally sits on it... it's like, "not a big deal anymore." I guess as long as it doesn't stay that way for too long, then the hat is safe.
