Wow! What colour is that John? It looks fantastic!
Oh... and darn you for showing this pics off! I'm beginning to think I should just set it up so a part of my paychecks go directly to the Penman Hat Co!
Oh... btw- I would LOVE to see a LC style hat in maybe a sahara colour felt

Re: Raiders of a different color
I think my eyes and brain are color-correcting these photos automatically... because I'm just seeing a regular brown hat.
Could you post a photo of this hat next to one of your standard browns?
Kind regards,
Indy

Hey! Somebody finally went for the green Indy!
I have noticed that Moss Green felt photographs oddly. It always either looks browner or greener than it really is. Shame, too. It's a nice color in person.

Yeah, that's definitely moss green! That's one of the things I love about that felt color, it can morph into different shades based on the surroundings and lighting. AWESOME job John!

Yeah, the sample John sent me is a much darker shade than those photos, but they still definitely look green to me. I wasn't 100% sure a Raiders hat would look good in green (even though that's my favorite color, and I've wanted a green fedora for as long as I can remember) but WOW!!!! Holy cow I'm excited.

Re: Raiders of a different color
I'm not saying it's not green; I just think it's funny how my brain auto-color-corrects the image to make me see brown. I've seen plenty of fedoras over the years and they all look very similar (if not identical) in color, until you literally put them side-by-side. You could easily take a photo of a brown hat and have it turn out looking exactly like that green one simply due to lighting. I'm sure the green will jump out more easily when it is shown being worn.
Great looking hat in any case! Now, back to getting my eyes checked.
Kind regards,
Indy

Re: Raiders of a different color
The moss looks top and totally works!!...and I love that Sahara Nick!!
If you go on the Penman facebook pictures, the brown and moss photos are consecutive. Makes it easier to compare and the colours don't play off each other because they aren't in the same shot....Must admit...my eyes did the 'auto-correct' thing as well initially..

Nick, that Sahara DOES look to be a beautiful lid (and Thank You for posting some photos) but wow, those photos look so... well... kinda' somewhere between blurry and fuzzy.... to me, anyway.
I am NOT asking you to turn around and take some more shots right away, my friend... but I would love to see some clearer shots of this beautiful hat sometime if you can manage it.
(Maybe these shots are just a bit too "soft-focus" for these old, weary eyes of mine)

Ahhh...
RIGHT!
Apologies... I missed the part where this is an LC in JOHN's possession...
For some reason I thought this was already one of Nick's hats (although I'm sure you'll probably HAVE one someday, buddy! - sorry to TEASE you with the idea!)
Instead, let me now just make an open-letter-type request to whoever will eventually get this fine looking Penman:
Really looking forward to a few shots of your new Sahara once you have it in hand!

Re: Raiders of a different color
Actually... it's a hat that I bought for my fiancee for her birthday! It seems like everytime we go out and I am wearing one of my fedoras at some point she takes it off of my head and starts wearing it! So I KNEW that I would have to get one for her some day! We agreed that a light brown coloured fedora would probably work best for her... so we went with the sahara. She also wanted to more relaxed pinch like my LC fedora.... so we went with that style. And John was kind enough to put on a nice light brown vintage ribbon on it... although, Dave, I am not sure of the name for the ribbon. He did get it from Steve though. Perhaps John can chime in?

Couldn't agree more with Magnoli about this (NOT about getting your eyes checked, Indy! Rather about the little "trick of the light" that can cause such confusion!)
It's clear that John's gorgeous new offering IS a mossy green color... I mean... well...he's TELLING us it is. That's good enough for me.
But just like Magnoli, I was confused when I first saw it, too! I thought I was seeing a faded, khaki-ish brown color offering from Penman.
The confusion is cleared up now, of course... and like many I'm just thrilled to see how GOOD that color looks on that style of hat!
But in keeping with what we have been talking about, I wanted to share this, too... just for kicks, mind you:
After I'd finished reading some of this Thread yesterday I turned away from my computer and happened to notice my Magnoli (by way of Steve Delk) Herbert Johnson sitting next to my AB Deluxe ... both are what most people - and most of us - would call "brown" hats... no question.
But when next to each other (and, of course, when viewed in different kinds of lighting) those same, common illusions of color seem to happen once again... Everything seems all nice and "various shades of brown" in the first 2 photos, but in the THIRD my HJ seems to get a little bit mossy greenish...
(I know I'm likely NOT saying anything new that 98% of those reading this didn't already know... but I thought you might still like to see the photos)
Cheers,
Mitch

It's probably also worth mentioning that even this last photo doesn't quite show it as "mossy" as it looks in person.
Anyway, I know all of this might seem like a long way to go in order to say "I see where Magnoli was coming from"... but I thought some might find it interesting.
Hope you don't mind me temporarily taking this Thread in a somewhat different (but still related) direction, John.

Are really having a tuff time seeing the one on the left being green and the right one being brown?
Re: Raiders of a different color
I still see it as a brown hat. even with the 'bown' hat next to it which actually IMO goes more into a redder shade. So, IMO the one to the left is still brown but a different brown.
Both are still really cool and nice looking.

Re: Raiders of a different color
That green hat reminds me of my old "official" Indy hat, which I wore for one month, each day, outside, all day in the New Mexico sun... at the end of the month, I started hearing people refer to it as my "green hat". Since it was bleached from brown to green slowly over a month, I never noticed and it took me a while to come to grips that it was now a green hat.
I ended up turning it inside out and reblocking it into a smaller brown hat for my two-year old brother-in-law (that was 11 years ago, so it is now part of my son's collection).
As I said before, John, I'm not doubting it's a green hat... just think it's funny how your brain can play tricks on you. I'm seeing a similar difference between your green & brown as in Mitch's color comparison:
Need to get me some glasses.
Kind regards,
Indy

Re: Raiders of a different color
Ok... here's a funny little experiment. I screen grabbed my above post, grabbed a little square from Mitch's obviously brown hat, dropped it onto the Moss Green hat... and you can hardly see it. But put it on John's brown hat and Mitch's swatch looks green!
It goes to show you can't always trust what you see, or what you think you see in photos. Best to leave it up to the people seeing these in person.
Kind regards,
Magnoli

Did I ever mention that I have this brown hat, that in certain lighting actually looks grey?
(Sorry John, I'm in the middle of a 72 hour shift and just couldn't resist the temptation )
BTW, both of those hat colors are gorgeous.

I can speak from personal daily wear of my AB moss green that very few people notice it's not brown unless you're standing directly under a light...and even then they kind of walk up sideways to me and ask.

Re: Raiders of a different color
Here's what I'm taking away from all of this:
Hat color and various kinds of lighting can make for such deceiving combinations that I'm glad someone like John (who's got not only the experience but the sharp, color sensitive eyes as well) is the one actually MAKING these hats!
At least I know when John is looking at different colors he's seeing the colors for what they ARE and not letting himself get confused - or incorrectly influenced - by whatever's sitting NEXT to it... (like I would)
And no matter WHAT that mossy green color occasionally looks like, John... it's still a beautiful color!

Tony,
I wouldn't go by mitches pics. I'm sure his shots weren't white balanced like mine are.
Can you photo shop a square of my green hat and put it on the brown hat. And then do the same for the brown hat?

That moss green's color does seem to morph, but that's what makes it sooo cool! I think moss green and pecan are my two favorite non indy colors for that very reason.

But that's my whole point... I just see a bunch of brown hats. We're so used to seeing Indy hats in brown that even when they're not... they look brown! I'm not saying that your hat isn't green, I just think it's funny that I can see a green hat to be brown.BendingOak wrote:I wouldn't go by mitches pics. Yes, thank you. I get your point that you have that Indy brown hat on your noggen all the time. I just clearly see green. I don't think the overlay of mitchs hat over mine is a good way of showing of color. His shots aren't white balanced. All in all non of this really matters much. Just wanted to share a green raiders hat with everyone that's all.

I don't have a regular brown Indy hat, but I do have one of those fawn-colored Federations that I got in a trade a while back. When I get the moss hat I'll take a pic of them together, and see if that helps confuse things more.
