Making Indy jacket more winter one :)

Post by tomek9210 »

Hi guys, I've got a question to you.
I have 40 size wested horsehide, actually 1 size up for me and I thought I can make it my winter jacket. It's pretty warm leather but I want to add some insulation.

Would would be best?
I saw fleece jumper sewed to the lining and that's the only way that comes to my mind.
Can you help me?

If you can find one the right size, and you have the appropriate sewing skills, a fleece jumper might be your best bet. It's certainly something to think about, and I'd love to see the results!

I'm looking for one with cuffs knitted in rib that will match the jacket color.
Sewing isn't a problem as my aunt is a tailor.

Maybe I will add some fur like in Magnoli Shearling jacket :-k I like the look of it.

Sweater or a cardigan paired with a nice scarf, Mystery of the Blues style! The only way to go in my book. [-(

I've never needed more than a couple layers under the jacket. Some thermals and a long sleeve shirt go a long way, so does a fleece pullover. I would thing sewing a pullover into an Indy jacket would be problematic considering the side vents.

Hmmm , neat idea.

I've thought about having the satin liner in my lambskin jacket replaced with one made of heavy flannel.
Authentic lamb + satin liner = "cold conductor"

Through side vents a lot of cold air gets inside so if I have a fleece jumper sewed into my jacket I would cut it to make vents in jumper too, just sew it all the way down.

Thanks guys for answers!

I'm not sure I'd be willing to sew the fleece in place, as that would eliminate wearing the jacket in warmer weather. Why not simply wear it layered?

I have two Indy jackets, one in my true size (38) and one in size up (40). I don't wear it in warmer weather just because it's too hot in it. So I want to make it more cold-resistant for really cold weather.
But ziped out lining is cool idea. I will think about it. Thanks :TOH:

One of our vendors is looking into the possibility of adding an Indy jacket with zipout lining. Stay tuned for further details as they become available.

I know that Magnoli can do it. I asked him about it two times "I almost got to get a jacket" ago, or was it three? He can do it in a nice wool. Then it was about $90 extra.

It's funny because we just had a good cold front move in here and all I could think about is how much these jackets really don't do well in extreme cold. I also thought about my jacket being snapless.... not a word M.... not a word... =;

I'd love for someone to make a zip out liner though. Maybe even a faux MOTB insert :-k

I have a USW in goat and the other day it got down to 34 degrees out and a fleece pullover and gloves were enough.

A little update. I asked my aunt to sew the fleece into the jacket. Got it today. She did fantasitc job, she put fleece in the body and some other insulation in the sleeves. I have worn it today and I must say it's very good (we have -10 to -15 Celsius degrees now in Poland and jumper+jacket kept me really warm)
All the best

When I need more warmth under a coat or jacket, I put on one of my zip-up polar fleece jackets under it. They have stand-up collars and are toasty warm.

Ditto. OR I can put a sheepskin or my old Eddie Bauer barn coat over top.

I have a Russian surplus winter coat with a zip in lining made of felted wool. It's WARM. I wonder if a clever seamster[ess] could fix up something similar?
