Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
What is your budget? I would soak the soiled fedora in rubbing alcohol and then scrub the you know what out of it where it is stained with a toothbrush if you are attached to the lid. But if you want a knew one then the budget you are on will determine the suggestions we give.

Sorry, man. But, there is no way you are getting the smell of cat tick outta anything, much less a hat. You may be able to disguise it for a while, but it will linger. Get a new hat and just toss the hat in the garbage...along with the cat that peed on it. If you are looking to spend no more than $150, I'd go Federation; $250, Penman rabbit; $350 Penman beaver; and $450 upwards, I'd go AB or Penman.

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
budget is $120 or less. so i'm looking at Akubras. not going with the Fed 4. nice hat, but the dimensions don't suit me.
yeah, i know it'll never come out, hence the RAGE. worst part is that part of the counter gets hit regularly, which i KNEW, but i still left my hat there.

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Do you need a bigger hat or smaller hat? Also, you can look into getting a vintage hat. There are some great deals on ebay. The larger sizes are typically harder to find, but they are out there. Most will sell right around or under your price point if you are 7 1/4 and up. Otherwise, you can find some for much less. Just an option to look into.

size 59, which i think is 27 1/4".
Pretty much just looking at Akubras for the durability. the Squatter, Bushman, and Adventurer look pretty good. anyone own these?

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
You better double check what you just typed. "27 1/4" ???
I wear a size 7 3/8, and my head measures 23".
Size 59 is usually a 7 3/8 on their sizing chart and what I've always received from them for my head size..
I HIGHLY suggest you take an actual measurement of your head (have someone ELSE do it at least 3 times to make sure), then send THAT measurement to HatsDirect and ask THEM to send you a hat that meets those specs.
Don't guess. You'll regret it.

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
opps, i meant 23 1/4. not sure how that 7 ended up in there. my Fed 3 is a size 59, actual head measurement is ~23 1/4. the hat's shrunk due to being left in the car a few times, so their size chart is pretty much right.Michaelson wrote:You better double check what you just typed. "27 1/4" ???

I never trust charts.
I've had a multitude of size 59 Akubra Fed's over the years, and until I wisened up and started sending my head measurement, not one of them were ever the same in head size or shape. After sending my head measurements, no problems since.
Just a word to the wise.

Actually I've read that biological washing powder will break down cat pee. But it would mean washing the hat and that would ruin it anyway.

Maybe you could try giving the hat a bath in Naptha?
(May I also recommend keeping your hat out of "Squating Range")

I don't even know if a naphtha bath would do the trick. I was always a dog person myself. I guess I now know why.

Keep an eye on the listings in the Bazaar. As people trade up or cull the herd some pretty good values can be found there.

yeah, first thing i did(after my rant) was check the Bazaar for hats.
i don't even know what naptha IS. something tells me it's bad for me and i'd be better off getting another hat.

I wonder if you could just rub the washing powder in, leave it to work, then brush it out? Or would loads of cat litter neutralize it? If the hat may be ditched anyway, it might be worth making its demise into an experiment to benefit future cat victims!Kt Templar wrote:Ha ha ha!enigmata_wood wrote:Perhaps if we didn't all rub cat litter on our hats?...

And pet ownership is touted as reducing blood pressure and helping people live longer/healthier lives? I think the doctors that write these reports have never been around a pet.
Sorry to hear about your loss. I agree with enigmata_wood, the hat is shot so if you have the time, play around with different techniques that just may work.

Indiana Jeff

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Go to your local Pet Store and get some enzymatic odor removal stuff. This stuff really works on pet urine, (yeah, I've worked and trained animals for many years). They make some just for cat urine. I can't guarentee this will save your hat, but it would be cheaper than a new hat, and if it works......your hat will definitely have it's own character One thing that is important: FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!!!! How ever much liquid waste was soaked into the material, thats how much odor remover you need to use, and then it must remain damp for a good day.

Urine was used in the felting process in the old days!
Do they still use it?

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
You could check and see if Hatsdirect has any FedIII's left in your size. I know I got a tawny and a black earlier this year. Sorry to hear about that. We have one cat that went through a period of pissing on EVERYTHING. Luckily, I always kept the stuff like hats out of reach. We did use Nature's Miracle pet stain/odor remover to great effect though. I'm not sure how if at all you could use it on your fed...
Goodluck!

First...luckily for you the cat whizzed on the least expensive of the good hats.
Second...this is more proof that cat's are not for petting, but for eating. If you have four cats, that's not a menagerie, it's a buffet! Just remember, once they are properly sauteed, they don't urinate on ANYTHING, and they taste better.

honestly i'm not going to bother trying to clean it, since it's on it's last legs anyway -a hole worn in the front, working on another in the back- so i'll just go ahead give it the funeral it deserves. For those wishing to attend, services will be held on Saturday.
speak of the devil. i just got an email from fedorachronicles asking for a Thanksgiving Story...

Seriously though, find out which cat it is and train it to use the litter box: There's some nasty stuff you can catch from cat wee.

they're all trained on the litter box. it must be a territorial thing; the three younger ones are always hissing about something(or, more commonly, nothing).
i suppose i could give the hat to a bloodhound and see which cat it goes after.

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
If it's repeatly pissing on the same spot ( counter). You might want to try the stuff blouse suggested. There is a smell there that the cat keeps going to. If not cleaned up properly it will happen again.
Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Probably too late, but since the hat is going to be replaced anyway, I think I would at least try to fix it for a rough-duty hat. Check on cures for skunk spray - it requires an acidic bath in something chemically similar to tomato juice. Obviously, tomato juice is probably going to really ruin it for good, but there must be an alternative. It will be soaked, but plenty of soaked hats have been saved. You will have to probably re-block it, and there are directions for that on the site.
Re: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
My old duck had many cats when i was growing up as a kid and we had all sorts of things ruined because they choose not to use a litter tray. From memory if there's a certain area your cats decide to whiz in, then if you put a litter tray there, it should use it...then after a while you can move that litter tray and they will follow it. I know it works in some cases.
As for the hat...wash the @#$% out of it...dust it up... and have a nice display hat

Have found that vinegar works as far as getting the cat pee smell out of things, but not sure you'd wanna soak your hat in vinegar either.
