Noah, "well worn" doesn't even begin to describe this hat. This hat has literally had all of the snot beat outta it. Truly a champ. Thanks, man.

Good to hear from ya', Dave! Don't be a stranger. ;)
Thanks, TS. I try to get on here as much as possible but I seem to have very little time for lounging around these days, which is good, I guess.

fuzzjunk, that hat looks great, man. And more importantly, it looks great on you! I love the color of that hat. I don't think I've ever seen a Raiders hat with a more mellow brown right outta the box. That will fade to a beautiful light brown in a few years. Wear it in good health.

Dave

Thanks Dave,

I took the pic right under a lamp so the color looks lighter then it actually is. Its neat how the lighting gives off that faded look though. I love the look of yours as well, they just seem to get better with age!

Fuzzjunk, the hat looks amazing! Great job John as always John.
Thanks Noah!

P.S. Who made that hat? I think I may want to get me one!

Thank you. As it should be. That hat is one of John's first ten. I bought it for $200, a discount he extended to his first ten orders. It was reblocked about a year ago. And all I've ever done is wear the thing. It gets brushed when it gets too dirty and thats about it. When it is raining out, this is the only one I go to. It is my rain hat, but so much more too. Like I said before, this is one of three, another Penman and one of my ABs, that I wear most often. Nothing like a Penman on your head.

I say this because I can make a hat with a 5 inch open crown height, and I can get the 4 1/2 front, 3 3/4 back and 4 3/4 on the sides which looks to be more accurate to most of the film hats.

I don't think it was 5 1/2 myself but it's just a guessing game on everyones part.

The point I was making is that you con not go simply by open crown shape alone. Every time I adjust the block shape or transition point.the open crown height must change.

When someone states that the raiders hat was a certain open crown height. It means nothi g to me without the right block.

I have change my raiders block five times and with three of them the open crown height had to change.

To say the open crown height was 5 1/4 for sure or 5 1/2 for sure or whatever height you think it might be. Means nothing.

No brain drain to identify that you are the hatter, John, and I see what you mean by transition points relative to block tweaks and the small changes you must make in order for the proportions to look right and be sized appropriately. Personally, I've never liked alot of felt material in the center dent, ie a deep, bashed center. The taller the crown, though, the more difficult it is to arrive at say, a 4 1/2" bashed crown in the front. As you pointed out, the transitional point has to be factored into the equasion. I would think that theoretically, if you have a high crown height, the transitional point would be higher on this hat than the transitional point of a lower unbashed crown. Hence, if you want to arrive at a 4 1/2" front bashed crown, with a good, untapered crown, as we have come to know and love, then it would appear that it would be easier to achieve this scenario with a lower unbashed crown than a higher one. It would seem that it is all about keeping the right proportions relative to the transitional point. Not to beat it to death, but it would seem that if you want a hat with little to no taper and you want a higher unbashed crown, then you would need for the transitional point to be higher. A lower bashed crown, keeping a square block shape, then you would need a lower crown with a proportionally lower transitional crown.

As an example, when the Henry first arrived, it is roughly 5 1/2" unbashed. I tried to bash it to a 4 1/2" bashed front. I then had two problems: the center dent was too deep and the sides were tapered, and I believe it was because I had reached the point of no return...ie I had bashed it lower than the transitional point would allow in order to keep straight sides, etc. Had I kept it at say, a 4 3/4" bashed front, the center dent would have been shallower and the sides would have been straighter...because the transitional point was higher on the high unbashed Henry. In my opinion, the total height of the crown and the transitional point has everything to do with where you most prefer the bashed crown vs. at what height you HAVE to bash the crown.

All of that to say that I cannot wear a high crown and need to have a lower crown, etc. Just something I look for.

That's amazing, Mitch! I didn't realize...got caught up in crowns, of all things, etc.?

I was just admiring your TNO Last Crusade jacket and many times, I've been taken aback by them. Each one practically deserves its own spot in a museum as works of leather art as much as personal articles of clothing. Hope you will enjoy it for a great many moons! :P

Just say the word! Here's to another 50... :H:

I know those Penman's are lerking about, so...Post 'em UP! :ducttape:

(Every once and awhile, I'll go back to the first few pages and remember that sense of anticipation and the waiting for these Penman's to start rolling off the assembly line of John's fingers. It's still kinda funny to me, and I want to thank you guys for helping to make it what it is. Everyone should feel welcome to post your new felt creations in this thread, and in doing so, you truely take ownership of a part of it, and the unprecidented choices available in this forum by our talented hatters! Each of you play a part!) :TOH:

Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool to see that it was a post by you that ushered in the next "phase" of this great Thread!

(After all, for those who might be reading this who don't know, it was YOU that got this great Thread underway!)
:D

And Scott I know what you mean when you say that you often "remember that sense of anticipation and the waiting for these Penman's to start rolling off the assembly line"...
Every so often I'll jump into this Thread from the Index page and then mistakenly scroll down to the bottom of Page 1 absentmindedly THINKING it's Page 48, 49, 50, whatever... and I see my Comment from back in September of 2008 where I'm saying "Chin Up, kids... I've got a feelin' that TOMORROW you'll ALL be proubly wearing those sharp lids!" because everyone was just chompin' at the bit to get their mits on these beautiful fedoras!

Ahhh... the memories...
:D
Plenty has changed in the last 2 years but one thing's for certain: the quality of John's work and product just keeps getting better & BETTER!

Thanks again for firin' up this Thread, Tex!
ONWARD, Page 51!

I remember when John was just posting pics of hats he was making before they were for sale. We all kept hounding him to sell them. I would log on every night at around 12:00 or 12:30 pm as that was the time that John was generally on here posting new pics. I was on here specifically at those times because I had a feeling he would be making the announcement that he would officially start selling them. When he did, I was online. He said that the first ten orders would get their hats (then only beaver) for $200. I was the first to respond, within milliseconds too I might add, and got my first Penman for $200 from John. Still my favorite hat, my beaver Raiders hat. Four Penmans later, I still want more! Keep up the good work, my friend. I should give you a call to see what is brewing in the Penman Hat Co. shop. Been a while since we spoke.

John,

Just an idea I was thinking about recently...it would be cool to have an ultimate adventure/work hat. Something that had the adventure look, wide brimmed, etc., and was cool/vinted to wear on the gord. I'll soon be going back to Jordan for my third season, so my thoughts are starting to shift to those distant desert scapes...
