Bathrobe/Smoking jacket

Hi folks,
I've been on the lookout for a bathrobe/smoking jacket similar to the one Indy wears at the beginning of Raiders. Any idea where I should look? My google-fu is weak with this one.
Any patterns?

Also called a dressing gown.

The problem is that modern versions are not structured like the vintage ones, which were basically made like a suit jacket, shoulder pads and all.

At least he has one (two actually) "smoking jackets" already on his site. Check it out.

I was looking for something similar myself (something to wear while sitting in my library with a pipe and a whiskey) and really was about to take the road for such a beautiful silk smoking jacket but ended up with an original vintage wool "dressing gown" (looks a bit more "Victorian" than "early 20th century dandy" ...).

Nothing like a good Whiskey and pipe. Getting in your comfort zone at home is priceless. I think I need a good smoking jacket. It could serve that purpose as well.

Yes, but the price of a full length satin robe with a suit jacket construction isn't cheap. I've had a lot of inquiries but not takers.

EDIT:
I've just asked the wife if she's up to the challenge. I have a blazer that was custom made for me. I'm thinking if we follow those measurements, give it a shawl collar, ample room in the front for the overlap and extend down to the knees, it might just work.

I'll post pictures after christmas if I'm lucky.

Well, let me announce that I'm the proud owner of a Magnoli Dressing coat and I love it. I had it with me at the QM summit, but my plans to wear it for the Scrapbooking for Scoundrals got messed up (another story, in time - it's got a funny ending, too). If I can squeeze it into my Thanksgiving trip in my carry-on, I'll try to get some shots posted this weekend. I just don't have a wife-beater to wear under it, so a V-neck might have to substitute.

Me, I'm seeing Arthur Dent. But then I HAD just such a dressing gown which I wore to a costume party as Arthur Dent. That was 25 years ago. Wish I still had it.

In wandering around department stores with my wife over the past week or so, I'm happy to say I've seen more nice men's robes on sale this Christmas, so don't rule out running down to your local stores and checking out their stock. Some really nice 'throw back' vintage designs this year.

Sorry to report that I had no photo opportunities with the Magnoli Dressing robe/gown. Indy Magnoli has requested that I return it temporarily for some professional photo shots, so as soon as I can get it package up and back to him, we should be able to show those pretty soon.

It is not as full as a robe, and doesn't wrap around like a bath robe does. So I definitely need to wear pants and a tee shirt or undershirt with it. But it is one of my prize possessions and I'll be happy to say that if you save up for one, you'll be happy for it.

There is another one out there that I had recently spied while watching Muppets Christmas Carol. It was the dressing gown that Michael Caine wore as Scrooge. Fairly similar to Indy's but looked more like a drapery material. Not sure what kind of material you would call that. It looked fairly substantial too. I think brocade is the wrong word for the fabric, but I'm not 100% on that.

Wished there were some better pictures. It looks fairly similar to Indy's for the exception of the quilted collar & cuffs. Can anybody here hazard a guess as to what the fabric is from these images?

I grew up watching lots of those Hollywood classic movies and always admired the way people dressed in the 30's and 40's and 50's. Every item of clothing had a time and place for it.

The sheer glamour just with a man's smoking or bath robe just looks so suave.
I 'll never understand why men stopped wearing them.
And don't get me started on the way women dress today...argh!

They have no idea what is day wear and what is evening wear.

Vintage is classic, and timeless, and I seriously think I was born in the wrong era...

Go for it gentlemen. Wear the robe!

Found a few more shots of Michael Caine in that robe that are better.

What I love about Indy's dressing gown is that the collar and cuffs are quilted. Thought it was a nice touch. Makes you wonder if the costumer for the film designed it and had one made or they found it in a studio warehouse and decided to use it as it may have been used in a period film 20 to 50 years prior.

Indy Magnoli, these shots don't do the dressing gown justice. I think the photography might be overexposed or my at home lighting is really dim. In some angles, the fabric loooks more red to me and magically, as I turn it, it appears to be green, a perfect blend that seems to match Indy's dressing jacket in Raiders. I had it with me at the Queen Mary Summit, but since we ran WAY late for the dinner, there was no time for me to change into it for the Scrapbooking session that followed. I'm not sure where else it would have been appropriate to wear in public.

I'd be interested in seeing what type of footwear Indy was wearing in the scenes that featured this dressing gown.

Yes, this is a very special satin that has a two-tone effect (I've only got a single color that does this (the red/olive), the rest are a one-color satin). You can't really photograph the effect without video.

in regards to indiana markvii's comment on indy's footwear, i have always been under the impression that he was simply wearing his regular suit pants and shoes. i haven't examined it too closely or paid much attention to it, but that's how it comes across in the film.

and b.t.w., that is a pretty nice robe.

Thanks, Dan, it is very comfortable to wear, too. But you definitely need to be wearing pants when you sit down while wearing this dressing gown. It is soft and has a wonderful feel. I look forward to getting it back from Indy Magnoli.

Oh, Travis, I am proud to own it. A first from Magnoli for me and for him. Maybe if enough people order one from him, he might be able to knock some off the price (taking a wild guess here). I put it on par with a custom made beaver hat like an AB or AB Deluxe, so if you want one just like it, don't settle for anything less than you can afford.

I came across something interesting while watching How William Shatner Changed the World. It was the part talking about the holodeck, and they were showing a scene in which Data was playing Sherlock Holmes I think in the episode 'Ship in a Bottle'. He is wearing a dressing gown very similar Indys, but a little more pressed.

May I ask, the robe in Raiders looks to be a very dark burgundy, and the robe in the pictures looks like a light purple. Is that my monitor, or does the robe have a different color than officially SA?

The colors in life are certainly more red-burgundy and not light purple at all. There is also a green tone-on-tone effect as well, as MarkVII pointed out above.
