I recently described the leather of my horsehide jacket as seeming to have grain pressed in to the finish on its surface. From my description, another member was led to believe that I might just have what is referred to as embossed leather. After reading my post several times, it’s easy to see how a person would be led to believe such a thing.

I decided to take a closer look at my jacket and began to clear off the finish in an inconspicuous area of the back panel. After removing the finish from this small section, I discovered that the grain is actually part of the leather.

Apparently, I should have studied my jacket in greater detail before presenting my opinions as if they were fact.

My apologies go out to the maker of my fine-looking jacket, as well as to any people out there that may have been put-off from buying a Wested horsehide. I also apologize for my convincing, opinionated words that did lead one person, and likely led others, to believe that Wested uses embossed cow leather and sales it as horsehide.

If you’re interested in buying such a jacket, I can separate facts from my opinions. It’s a fact that yes, the Wested horsehide has a finish applied to the surface and it’s also a fact that there is, indeed, real leather under there.

It’s my opinion that this finish is very thick and the leather is about four or five times as heavy as the Wested washed goat. It’s my opinion that it weighs a ton and seems about as durable as the leather from a pair of combat boots. If I had a calibrated metric scale, I would measure the weight and then calculate the density of the two materials so that I could offer you this information as fact, but I don’t so I can only provide my opinion regarding the density and weight of the hide.

It’s also my opinion that if the finish on the HH eventually starts to not suite your taste after having bought it, there are a lot of things you can do to it, if you take your time and use your imagination, that will make it look way better. Just my opinion.
