I'll keep checking in from time to time to see what progress is being made, I don't like bothering him much...takes time away from hat making.

I'm geared up and hunkered down to wait it out for three years if need be, I guess Nov. will be the month that never completely dies with five hundred hats on order.

Five hundred hats on order! Is that just Nov. of 2007? Or longer? I ordered one in June or July of 2008. I think. I'll have to look it up. Well, it will probably go well with the walker. Good luck to us.

Actually Chewie Louie, I have not, I ordered in January of 2008 and no hat yet. I waited a while to pay so maybe that is why mine is taking so long, I think I paid in February or March. 2 years and 6 months and still waiting like the rest of you guys. I don't know where Steve is at on his orders currently. I know he had a lot of hats in Dec. Nov 2007 but I am not sure he is working on those still or not. Only the man himself can speak.

I was able to speak with him recently to inquire about a reblock/resize status. I now he's got a floor to ceiling stack waiting for reblocks. I didn't ask where he is in the regular orders. The best times to reach him are from about 8-10 am Central time.

I'm Feb. 08', and don't have it as of yet. I've done the math, I'm thinking it's pretty much mathematically impossible that it won't stretch to a three year wait for some based on the reported Nov. hat order list and Steve's reported weekly output. So, there's no hurry, at least for those waiting, and this is not a criticism, I'm just relaying what I've found and believe to be a distinct possibility.

Don't have one on order, but was wondering if any COW member has received one lately? Should be able to find out when they ordered to get the wait time narrowed down. It's strange because I have not seen any posts lately mentioning a hat arriving in the mail.

I think its because of two reasons. People aren't posting his hats as much as they used to and that he does a lot of orders that aren't members.

I received a hat recently, but it probably doesn't 'qualify' because it was the Raiders Rabbit with the 2 month wait, not the extended lag time as with the other orders. Steve is tweaking it, and should get it back any day now.

Anyone now how far out his reblocks are?, I sent ne out about 2 months ago.
If the lead time is to great I may try to ask him to send to John and pay the extra shipping. My hat will need a major overhaul as the varnish needs to be compltly leached out.

Just a refresher. That any new hats purchased from Steve now is worked on the weekend. Doesn't have the long wait time but you must check with him on the turn around time. That goes with both felt choices. Read his site. The orders before the prices increase are being worked during the week like normal.

I'm with the rest of you guys and am waiting for two hats. I have no doubt you will receive one of the best hats you will own. steve delivers without fail.

Yea I guess I am confused on when people are getting their AB's and what is putting them ahead of other people? I have a 24" head almost exactly and I ordered a beaver SOC in may 08'. So I am confused as to why Indiana Williams would get his before me in "a few weeks" ?( I am just using Indiana Williams as an example here)? Especially when I have a pretty good sized melon, because as I understood larger or smaller hats are often finished sooner.
And I don't want anyone to think this is an impatient "where the #### is my hat?" post, because IT IS NOT ;) I know steve is a master at his craft and is doing the best he can, and I don't mind waiting at all. I am just curious is all. :TOH:

Am I reading that correctly 7/08 as in July 2008?? I ordered 1/24/08 and have not received a hat, should I contact Steve? Unless your a hat size that is out of the popular range, that is just odd, unless Steve is that far ahead. I have a big head myself and thought my hat would be here earlier than the popular sizes. I did change what I wanted, I went from a Raiders in beaver to CS in beaver. Steve said he got it, that was months ago. I am beginning to wonder if he really is at 7/08. Or were you meaning 07/08 as in 2007/2008, I am confused.

Hi Joe, thanks for clearing that up. Well I guess those early 2008 orders should be around the corner then. The fall, is over a month a way so your close as well. I do remember him saying there was not many orders after the nov/dec 2007 orders, so hopefully Steve can get his lead times down. I guess the only thing we can have is some more patience. I have already waited 2 years and 6 months why not another couple more months. Thanks again for the info.

I order mine on Sept 2008, so as far as I understood... I should be receiving it in about a month? I'm a 7 3/8 too.

I ordered my CS brown AB in Oct '08 and by the following year the wait for my first Indy fedora was really getting to me, especially since I had been wearing my CS Nowak jacket for awhile. I broke down and ordered a CS grey train from Penman in Jul '09 and got it Nov '09. I wear it daily.
After I get my AB I'm going to wear it as my casual daily hat and clean up my Penman to wear with my suits.

Only so many hat blocks?

Post by lantzn »

I've read that if your head is a common hat size, it can take longer to get your hat because of the vendor having only so many of a certain number of different block sizees. That being the case, what are the most common hat sizes here in the US?

When I first emailed/ordered my CS AB back in Oct/Nov '08 I was asked to email my hat size after paying. I emailed it but received a reply because I left out one of the numbers which made it unclear to Steve the correct size. I emailed him the correct size but never heard from him again, even though emailing a number of times for a confirmation.

Since then I've learned from Penman hats that I have a long oval head. Is my size, 22-5/8 long oval, a common hat size for custom hat vendors?

Aw Shucks, once again, it really is amazing how time flies.

I can't believe that it's been a year since I started this thread!

I was reflecting the other day about the fedora that I have
been wearing now for 2 years and 3 mos, the one I fetched
for temporary use.

When I ordered my AB from Steve, I figgered I would have a
wait of at least a year, so I bought a Federation Deluxe as a
cheap substitute just so I would have sumtin' to wear.

I will never forget the horror and shock when I first slipped
that new style Fed over my noggin. It slipped all the way
down to my eyebrows and only stopped when it rested on
my ears! And wee doggies was it loose! Reckon I actually
gave them the wrong size, about an inch too big!

Well, dugnugget, there was no way in tarnation that I was going
to return it all the way back to Australia, so I just stuffed the
living daylights out of the sweatband with foam strips and
toilet paper.

Much to my relief it worked so that I could at least wear
the hat until it got too windy!

Anyhoo, to make a long story short, I am amazed how my
ole fed evolved into a perfect fit. Over time and through
all the wet weather, it has shrunk down to my perfect
size with no stuffing at all!

And by golly, with the 3/4" turn that I used in my raiders
bash, it really has just the right touch of side curl reminescent
of the movie hat.

When I saw myself in the mirror the other day, I could
have sworn, with a big grin on my smug mug, that for a flash
it appeared like an SA Adventure Hat!

Any hoot, I am still counting down the days for my May 2008
Adventurebilt order to arrive. Ya'all know, the next best thing
to having a dream AB hat is waking up every morning savoring the
moment when ya find that magic white box on the ole doorstep.

It really is a nice feeling anticipating that magical day and
knowing it will really be on it's way soon.

The journey is almost as sweet as the prize!

Happy trails!

Regards,
Ken

Just to give you guys an update...I ordered my "Drunken Monkey" Raiders AB in Nov. 2007 and it's still not here. It kinda makes everyday exciting, because I could get home and have 3 years worth of Christmas gifts all stuffed in a little white box. I'll post it up as soon as it arrives (assuming I can stop running around my neighborhood humming, dah da da daaaah, dah da daaaah...)

Adventurebilt Deluxe update here.

Myself and my brother ordered a couple of hats of Marc in the spring or early summer of 2008. I just had an email off Marc that mine is ready, and my brother's is next in the queue.

My hat is a version of the Trilby on Marc's site, with a wide (2 3/4"), bound brim and high (5" or 5 1/2") crown. Should be a wide, reddish ribbon on it with a back bow. It'll be blocked on the Crystal Skull block. Can't remember all the details as I gave them to Marc a year ago.

My brother's sounds like it's going to be a cross between a cartoon version of Indy's, crossed with a cowboy hat. It'll have a much wider brim than is standard, with (I believe) a bit of an upward curl, and is shaped on the Raiders block.

I'm not looking for a status update, but had a question for those that already have their hats. Does Steve contact you to let you know that it is coming prior to shipment? The reason that I ask is, since I placed my order, I have lived at four different addresses (Yes, I move a lot, work transfers and marriage can have a way of causing that). I've notified Steve via email for each move, but I've never heard back from him. I'd just like to know that when it is ready to be shipped, it will go to the right place.

Thanks,
Mike

As long as you gave him my address, everything should be fine.

I don't think Steve generally e-mails to let you know your hat is on the way. At least he hasn't for mine. Having said that, I did send him an address change after having placed an order and the hat came to the updated address.

I don't think Steve send you an e-mail when your hat goes out, he is pretty busy and gets a lot of e-mails in a week, let alone a day. If your really worried that he did not get it, I would send another and put URGENT in the header, usually he will see these. I made an order change to my hat, instead of a Raiders hat I wanted a CS hat instead, I have too many Raiders hats and wanted something different. As far as where he is on the list, I have no idea. I know I placed my order in Jan. 2008 but I have received no hat yet, it did take me a while though to get the money to him cause I paid by check, so I am not sure if that may have placed me further back. I guess when it hits 3 years then I will contact Steve, but until then you just have to have patience.

Myself and my brother ordered a couple of hats of Marc in the spring or early summer of 2008. I just had an email off Marc that mine is ready, and my brother's is next in the queue.
Another ABD update here. I ordered on 7th July 2008 and have just heard from Stefan that I'm up next. I'm VERY excited now!
