The most narcissistic topic of the...well, the week at least

Post by Indydawg »

I am officially declaring my intentions to re-create what I believe to be the PERFECT Indy jacket....using the jacket that Wested put out ten years ago as a template, I am going to blend my own specific design specs and "added improvements" to the jacket's design to get at the essence of what Wested used to put out, but which will incorporate as yet unspecified requirements.

This is my "Last Crusade" jacket.

If I can get this one right....I'll be done with Indy jackets....I've got ONE other jacket I'll keep that's an Indy jacket...will keep it forever....but there will be at least ONE other in the closet....my "Last Crusade."

Now....I have a question to put to the forum...your opinion is requested....

Aside from Riley ( I can NOT afford those prices, man...), who do you all think should get the job?

Wested
Magnoli
Todds

Who?

Just thought this would be fun to toss around a bit...

Thanks for your responses, in advance!
Regards!

Good luck on your quest my friend. I stil havent found my PERFECT LC jacket. one day it will come...

Last I heard, Todd doesn't do LC jackets. I've asked. ;)

but I will tell you this. Magnoli does FANTASTIC work. construction, detail, skins. ++ you are not rolling the dize with him...

Wested can knock out an AWESOME LC jacket IF you are lucky. just look at Tremolos and Kt's. wow! pluss they have that nice ''original maker'' stamp on them.

I own from both of these vendors ad I recommend them both.

I really dig KT's Wested in antique cow. I think it looks about as perfect a LC as any I've seen, next to Tundraiders.

...just get a bigger size. KT's a wee bitty person and you'd probably end up looking like a mutant with his size jacket on (no offense KT) ;)

PS-And I have to admit, while I DO want to get with Magnoli about a jacket, I AM inclined to do exactly that, Gringo....I WANT Peter to do this jacket! I WANT him to succeed in this! I WANT his help in fulfilling this quest. Heck, he's been to my house...drank my bourbon (and I was NEVER a cheap bourbon-man), met my kid...we've broken bread together...surely he can see clear to throwing down the gauntlet one...more....time!

That IS my current inclination...

Other thoughts?

I've never owned a Magnoli myself, but to my eyes, Holt had the best LC jacket ever. Made by Magnoli. Why don't you show it off for Indydawg Holt?

For What it's worth IndyDawg, the LC jacket IS the Holy grail of Indy jackets for me. I was primed and ready in Late December to pull the trigger on Nowak version. I know _ was close to having the actual jacket available for Tony to look at. I decided to wait until after the holidays. Sadly, it was not meant to be for us Indy Gear fans. We lost a truly gifted artist.

I'd love an accurate version of this jacket. I think the original manufacturer would be a great starting point. I'm just not sure the quality control and customer service is there for a project like that. I could be wrong. Good luck in your quest. I'd love to see you succeed, because we would all win.

If you need help with that bourbon, let me know.

Well, from what I've seen in the past, there are only a handful of people who have succeeded in getting a laundry list of custom items from Wested. Unless you are one of them, you're asking for trouble by buying Wested. Besides which, Peter has tried very hard to pound into our stubborn heads that he does not care to take such orders.

My money is on Magnoli. You can even get it distressed properly.

Forgive me but by your wording in the original post I'm not sure if you are looking for the perfect "Last Crusade" style jacket, or is it your "Last Crusade" to find the perfect for Indydawg all around Indy jacket which would pick and choose from the four styles and possibly others?

I really tried to make that a longer sentence but couldn't think of anything else to add.

I'd go with Magnoli unless you're in a position to go and see Wested in person. They seem to be hard to deal with by email or over the phone. Magnoli is a gear nerd llike many of us here and (along with Todd) really gets the importance of details. I love my Magnoli jacket!

No...you read it right, K-I am going to try and use the 10 year old Wested pattern as a baseline and blend the nuances of the other jackets to create MY perfect Indy jacket....

I'm calling it my "Last Crusade" jacket...'cause that's what it's going to be for me with the jacket...the LAST one!

Yes, M....yes, I did...with Wested...eventually became so frustrated after two straight years of back and forth with jackets that I bought that G&B cowhide Expo and called it a day. But...this time it will be different....RIGHT?!

Oh, and don't think I didn't already TRY to get Jeff to send me his...he wouldn't even dignify the request with a response!! Can't say I blame him either...he's got ONE special jacket there!!!

I would say Magnoli or Todd would be the way to go, and the reasoning is this: It would be a COW jacket. Design by a COW member, made by a COW member. There is no dealing with other variables and other business, as has been the problem with Peter and Dave Hack.

A collaboration of only COW members such as yourself and Magnoli (and maybe Eric because like myself he love the LC jacket best) would make this something COW could be proud of instead of something COW is "offered".

Make sense?

Well, as of now, it doesn't seem that Todd offers the custom option. I believe he's considering offering it again, but right now I'm pretty sure you get a Todd's starndard or you don't get a jacket from Todd's. So unless you intend to wait, then your COW member made jacket option is reduced to Magnoli. Well out of my price range, but if it wasn't, I'd probably be going that route right now :TOH:

Yeah, I left out my suggestion that the COW jacket be offered at an affordable rate for COW members :) Most of the gorgeous work on Magnoli's site is too much money for me to justify, but if he could find a way to reduce cost and pass on the savings. I know he has a business to run though, and I'm not one of these "boo hoo I can't afford it guys", but I know it would be hard for me to justify springing for yet another Indy jacket at Magnoli's prices.

Still, if there was a COW vendor to consult about the jacket, it would definitely be Magnoli. Nothing against Todd though.

Well, all things considered, Magnoli's prices aren't that high. If you're going the Magnoli route to get a jacket made with the same measurements as a Wested off the rack, then yeah, that'd be way too much. But for genuine customization, Magnoli is hardly your most expensive option. Unless, of course, his price sky rockets if you want more customization than just back length, sleeve length and chest... which as far as I know, it doesn't...

Yeah, sounds like Magnoli is the way to go, but check with Todd and see if he can get you the hide you are looking for and get it made for a better price.
