Here's how I re-attach a liner to the crown...

Post by Marc »

...since this hasn't been discussed very much in the past, I thought I'd let you know how I do this.

Most common thing is to glue back the liner, leaving some ugly spots of glue in the crown, with the risk of damaging the felt next time you rip out the liner.

The alternate would be to sew it into the crown by hand. That takes a LOT of time and you stress the felt as you keep forcing a needle through it, if you do it on a regular bases.

Personally I put some spots of painters tape into the crown, where you'd usually put the glue. Say 5 or 6 spots with 1" x 1" and on in the very top of the crown. This painters tape can be easily removed, without stressing the felt. Now I put some smaller spots of tape that glues on both sides (like what you use for the carpet - I'll just call it double tape) on the painters tape. This 'double tape' has quite some glue in it and it could stress the felt, so that's why I put a layer of painters tape beneath. Now the liner itself (be it silk of satin) is quite tuff, so you can put the liner directly on the 'double tape'. Start with the top spot and go on with the other spots. Now the liner is back where it belongs and can be easily removed, without any risks of stressing the felt.

Greatly appreciated.

For me it works fine simply to fix it with the sweatband after some shapes on the crown. At least for the FedD.

I've been looking for a way to re-attach my sweat band, I've been needing to iron it... MAN! These constant days of wearing it just beat the thing to death! Now I won't worry about how I'm going to get it back on! Thanks for the tip!

Now here's another question:

What do you do for the sweat band? As you know there's a spot on the outside that is glued on, as with the Fed. What do you use to re-attach that?

Ehh, just to clarify; I was talking about the LINER, not the sweatband. But since you had to IRON it, I suppose so were you?

For your other question; the SWEATBAND has a spot on the outside that is glued on?!? Do you mean the ribbon??? And the little glue spot behind the knot on the double bow? I've never seen any sweatband that had any glue on it.

Doh... I meant to say Liner the first time, sorry about that.

On the Fed, there's a little rim around the outside of the sweat band that is glued on, and over the months it's come lose in some places from wear and tear. I'm just curious to know what's the best kind of glue ot use.

:-s To be very honest with you, I don't know beans about what you're talking about. Do you maybe mean the little rim of artificial leather that sits under the sweatband? On the Akubras I've seen so far (as on any other brand) the leather sweatband is sewn onto this artificial leather, which again is sewn into the crown. Could you maybe post some pics to demonstrate what you mean?

I suppose it's the artificial leather rim you're talking about, but I can't believe it's actually glued on. This rim is part of the sweatband by the way.

When he said sweatband he meant liner all the time. :)

He ironed it and wants to reattach it now. But for the Akubra crafters used glue he wants to do so too and asks which he should use.

I'd say just follow Marcs little tutorial and don't use glue for it's really a threat to the felt if you have to take out the liner often.

Alrighty, let's see if I can't explain this... :)

Image

What you are looking at is a regular Akubra Federation sweat band where the glue has come un-done on the edge. This is not damage to the sewing. The stitching you see on the very edge is the ones holding the sheap skin and the fake leather together, just below it (and not visible in the picture) is the stitching that holds it to the felt. This is simply where the glue on the very edge has come off and the sweat band has lifted in several areas. To clarify, I'm not sure if it is indeed glue holding it on, but if you look in areas that aren't damaged, you can pull it back and you can tell something is holding it to the felt. What is this exactly, and what can I use to repair it?

Thanks for your help guys! :)

Mine has done teh exact same thing, but it really doesn't alter the fit of the hat in any way. Why such a worry about changing it?

I'm near positive that it wasn't glued onto the felt, but at least I understand what you mean and why it bothers you.

There are two ways to sew in a sweatband; either you sew the sweatband into the crown using only one piece of thread which goes all around the crown, while every inch it changes from behind the artificial leather to the outer side of the crown (hidden under the ribbon) and back again. Finally a double knot makes sure the thread stays where it is.

The alternate is to tack the sweatband into the crown, using the same technique as on the ribbon (but with one tack each inch). I think that's how the sweatband was attached to the crown in your case.

Now with a little luck, this can be repared quite easy. Look on the outside of the crown, if you can push up the ribbon, where the sweatband came lose. If that is the case, simply tack the artificial leather back to the crown here, and make a double knot (you have to fold the sheap skin out, as the knot should be on the inside of the crown). Than pull back the ribbon to its original place. Voilá!

If you cannot push up the ribbon this particular place, you have to remove the liner and ribbon and than you can sew the artificial leather with the one thread technique. Just be sure not to use too many stitches each inch, as you don't want to weaken the felt. Than put back the ribbon (explained elsewhere here on C.O.W.) and finally the liner as described above.

Marc
