It's made of ...

Post by Tibor »

So, where does all this leave us with when asking what the jacket was made of?...

Peter said lambskin (not shrunken - too small)

Tony said it looked most like shrunken lamb to him

Neil said calf, er cape skin (lamb), er cowhide

We've seen striations, smoother areas, shrunken areas, all on the same jacket. I kinda like my goat, but that's just me. I'm not really concerned about the zipper. It's clearly on the left under the wind flap on screen and that's where it should be. So when it all boils down, I'm more concerned with what's on screen than how it was made. I don't know if the two jive or not, but with a costume department fiddling with things, I guess it doesn't matter.

Maybe the common theme is lamb, and maybe that's the most likely candidate that addresses the wrinkling, the striations, the drape, and the consensus of jacket makers (sort of). Based on the various leathers I've held or owned, I'm inclined to believe it was a vegetable tanned lambskin with some striations - medium/light thickness, somewhat shrunken. I'm not sure it can be replicated these days (I don't know much about tanneries - maybe I don't want to).

Is that where all this has left you, or do you have some other impressions?

I could never tell what the jacket was made of. I always thought it was either a thick lamb or a soft cow (calfskin). I tend to think that goat is the best leather for an Indy jacket becasue it combines the softness and weight of lamb with an incredible strength.

I figure that by now the only way we'll know what it's made of is if we have David Carouso from Miami CSI and his forensics team, do a DNA test on the jacket in Skywalker Ranch. But he'll have to tell us face to face, well kind of... he just won't look at us when he tells us... and he'll take off his sunglasses mid-way to emphasize that it’s from a rare breed of mountain goat that went extinct in the late 80's. That way we're all _____.

And why does Horatio always tip his head down to say something with impact... maybe he's insecure like Laurel Bacall was when she started and got in the habit...

Yeah, I like the Nowak Goat Riley made for me. Great dark color, sturdy, great fit. I agree Dawg and Holt. For real world, goat's got it. As for the original, I can almost hear Henry Senior ... "Indiana, let it go".

I know one WAS in the works for possible release at the end of the year, but last I heard, that particular hide was put on the backburner....again. Hard to get hold of enough hide to make it worth putting into production, was what I was told.

As far as I know only Wings ever produced one in 'roo, and its surface had dye problems. They didn't carry it but a year, and that was back around 2002 or '03, as I recall. They still turn up on ebay on occasion.

_ had one when they came out.

I`m not following this too heavily but is it possible, _, that Neil has an accent and "lamb" can come across as sounding like "calf"..especially since you stated that it could also have been "cape". I don`t know the details but, over the phone, those words can possibly end up sounding the same under certain accents? Hmmmm

Lot of good quips in this post :rolling:

I share the same views as CM. For those that want to know what it was made of originally, well, if Paterson says we probably will never know, then we probably will never know.

Even if you knew technically what it was made from, that doesn’t mean that the leather exists anymore, tanned in the same manner anyway. You might just be better off trying to duplicate it the best that you can in a hide that suits you.

If Tony Novak says that the shrunken lamb was the closest to what he examined, then I am inclined to believe him. And yet that hide wasn’t for everyone, either because they didn’t feel that it emulated what they saw on the screen or they just plain didn’t like it. But Tony had so many different leathers, I don’t think that it mattered to him what he made the jacket of. He didn’t have any reason to not tell the truth. In fact the opposite is true. He said that the shrunken lamb wasn’t exactly easy to work with.

I'd go for the calfskin myself (and I might). I don't really need this other kidney.

In all seriousness, I believe Peter's claim that the jacket was made out of veg-tanned sheepskin, AND Neil's claim that it was made out of oiled calfskin. I think both hides could look remarkably similar on screen, and would be quite interchangeable, especially considering the various lighting and action that either jacket would be subject to on the set.
