Steerpike,
I was thinking about getting one of those since seeing one on John's site. Is that beaver or rabbit? I think you also have a CS grey. Is there a big color difference? Hope so.

John,
Sounds like it might be a plan. BTW, is the Clipper a beaver or rabbit?

I have that color in both felts but the original was a rabbit.
Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
WOW!! Never knew there would be that much difference. I think this is the 1st time I've seen both colors of felt in the same lighting and background. John, don't waste your postage. I can see the difference. You should ask Steerpike if you could get a photo like that for your site.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
Steerpike,
Forgot to ask about your opinion on the differences in the rabbit and beaver felts. How does your new rabbit Clipper compare to the beaver CS? I own John's beaver CS Hero and Train Traveller. I only ask because the the one rabbit hat I own is John's test hat off his newer Raiders block. John has informed me that a test hat is much different than a hat made for a customer. Your opinion would really help me make a decision. Thanks.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
mcmanm,
what can I say, I own 4 Penman hats, 3 in beaver (Raiders hero, CS Travel, Last Crusade) and one in rabbit (Clipper). When I touched the Clipper it was so good because is very softer than beaver, I have to say is more light to wear, and sometimes I forgot to have it on my head, really!
Also, I think is more screen accurate because the original was rabbit. I think everyone has to own both a beaver and a rabbit hat, because of their different qualities, the beaver is a bit stronger and work well for the CS model (as the original was beaver).
So, in my very personal opinion I'd say CS in beaver and Raiders in rabbit!
Oh, and I didn't talked about how I love my beautiful Clipper color: the steel gray is a color so rich and deep, it matches perfectly with the softness of rabbit, I completely falled in love with it.

Just so we are clear. I think when steerpike sates "softer" he means floppier. The beaver is smoother as in pounce.
Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
I love both those hats Steerpike, the colours are amazing!!! You don't show 'em off enough
Still don't know which on to get though - You have too many awesome hats John.
I'm always amazed at the ability of someone who can lock into words their feelings and opinions about something they obviously have so much enthusiasm for,,,,even more so when they have to do it in another language to their own. I know, I post on the German Indy forum and it's very hard.

I think steerpike did just fine. I knew what he was talking about clearly but a lot of people hear, read soft and some think smooth others think floppy.

I just got the confirmation e-mail from John. It was a heart jump moment. Thanks John, & I'm sure I'm going to love it, so sorry you won't get this one back. But, once we move up there I'll have it visit from time to time.
Again, thanks for the good news today! I can't wait to see it.
Cheers!

Highest compliments for these great photos, HardBop...
You're lookin' sharp in your Penman, no doubt about that... but I especially like the SECOND of the two photos. That, my friend, is a shot that says nothing but CLASS.
Cheers,
Mitch

I agree with everyone else HB! I think you pull off the best "Modern Fedora-Wearing Man" of anyone on these boards. A perfect blend of old style mixed with new, without it looking cheesy.

Good looking lid, Hard Bop! I think it looks very natural on you, and you wear it well. We get 90 plus heat out here a lot, and I wear my hat sometimes.

HardBop, I have to agree with everyone else, you wear the hat well. It's obvious the thing was made for you, one just can't make a factory hat look like that. That hat yells Indiana Jones better than any hat formed to a specific scene I've seen on anyone besides Harrison Ford.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
A Penman is appropriate, no matter the venue. Here is my charcoal Penman with vintage iron ribbon (supplied by Steve) at Churchill's Pub in Miami, on stage with Naked Vengence.
And the best groupie around...my wife.
For those that care, that's a pre-Gibson lawsuit era Ibanez Les Paul I'm playing there. I usually use that Les Paul Custom along with my '05 Gibson Les Paul Standard at our live shows.

Dave, that'a a great looking lid you have there. We seen that before?
Learned something there. I didn't know that LP sold his name to Ibanez as well. Just seems a bit out of character for Ibanez though. Still, love the guitar.

Nice axe/hat combo Dave!
I sure do miss my Gibson Les Paul, and playing shows with it too.
That hat sure does look great on stage! Is that a quilted maple top finish on the Ibanez?

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
Ian, Lester didn't. That's why Gibson filed suit against Ibanez in 1975. Originally, Ibanez just ripped off other popular models like the Stratocaster, SG, and Telecaster. So, this guitar was made before Gibson filed suit, sometime in the early 1970's. Great sounding guitar.
FJ, Yeah, there is nothing like a Gibson. My Gibson LP Standard is the fatest sounding guitar I've ever played and I've played a few Norlin era 13/14lb-ers. Nothing like it. I use the Ibanez for the first two songs, so the hat enver stays on long enough for it to be pictured with the Gibson. Oh, and the Ibanez is a black custom that was redone in that odd foil-like finish. Don't know what the heck it is. But the light reflects nicley off of it and looks cool on stage. No figure to that top, as far as I know. Know, the Gibson, that's a different story. Nice flame top on that one.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
Sorry, Ian. Didn't even address this. Yes, I'd posted it before. Got this one in October of '09. This has become my go-to hat. Its a totally original hat that screams 30's (which is just what I wanted). May possibily be my most worn hat. Its be rained on, sat on, taken by my five year old brother and mashed up, well...just as beaten up as my Penman Raiders and it looks all the better for it.
