trouser colour experiment
To more accurately replicate Indy's trousers I bought a pair of chinos - two sizes too big to get them good and baggy - and off white 100% cotton so they'd take well to dye.
Using Photoshop I took screen caps of Indy's 'pinks' trousers from Raiders and adjusted the hue for true whites. From that I sampled and averaged some of the pixels between the exteme highlighlights and shaddows.
From the Dylon website I took screencaps of their colour chart into Photoshop and experimented with combining one solid colour with an overlay of another.
I concluded that 1 packet of Dylon Antique Grey with one third of a packet of Dylon Terracotta would closely match the trouser colour.
I'll be dying the chinos soon, I'll let you know - with pictures - how it goes.

Re: trouser colour experiment
Be interested to know how this turns out. The colour of the dylon dyes is the on the tops of the boxes and antique grey seems really dark to me.
I was going to use it for another project but it's strong colour scared me off.

I've worked with Dylon before and discovered that for a lighter tone you either dye more fabric per packet or use less of the packet. They give guidelines about what intensity to expect from different dry weights of garment. It's also possible to use the dye you kept back to re-dye, adding more colour to a garment that came out too light.Kt Templar wrote:Be interested to know how this turns out. I'll start with 1/2 a pack of grey and 1/6 of terracotta

My camera just died but I'll have the trousers done by Friday for the UK Masonic School summit, so you'll see photos when that's posted up

Re: trouser colour experiment
As this was an experiment I tried something different to this, previous project:
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=43040&hilit=+pinks - which I always thought came out a bit too brown.
Rather than dye in each colour seperately I mixed the dyes in a single run, in the proportions I had worked out - 3:1.
What I discovered was that the dominant colour took over, the trousers came out almost a blue grey.
I thought I had got a nice pair of non-Indy trousers for my trouble.
HOWEVER
I then ran them through again with the remaining Terracotta dye and that fixed it. The colour is now mid-grey-with-a-hint-of-pink. not as dark or brown as the first pair in the above link.
So in the end equal amounts of each colour seem about right.
I've learned that the first colour you use will dominate and the second colour will not take as well.
I've come to the conclusion that the best way to get the army pinks might be this:
Mix half a pack of Anique Grey and half a pack of Terracotta into a single dye wash, then use the kept back powder to run a second adjustment dye if needed.
YES YES I'll post pictures at some point

Re: trouser colour experiment
Hi Enigmata, any closer to posting some pics? I'm interested as I was just about to dye some cheap chinos my wife bought me from BHS. They're a classic 'chino' off-white / beige colour. I was just going to use a light brown dylon colour, but now I'm intrigued about the grey & terracota mix you're using.
