Anyone know a source for MK VI (yes, SIX) bags?

Post by Indiana Jerry »

These used to be more common...Soldier Of Fortune even had a listing for them - CHEAP, since they weren't the in-demand MK VII variety. And the UK-sourced 'Indy bag' was based on a MK VI pocket config.

If you've never seen one, it looks JUST like a MK VII from the front, but the main flap doesn't cover the two back pockets, insteadit has a separate flap cover on the back, so they are more like 'hidden' pockets.

I got one for a friend a few years back, and it was time to replace it, as his wore out just as my MK VII did after so many years. But all I could find was unissued MK VII's now...(yeah, as if that's a valid complaint).

But still...anybody see any MK VI's around lately? They might be cheaper, and I'm not a stickler fordetail, really, so I'm really curious if any are available.

Anybody know?

There used to be a place out of Australia that carried repros of this bag, but I can't find it for looking...

Lawrence Ordnance! That's who I was thinking of! I would send them an e-mail, too. I almost ordered one from them a while back. Now I wish I did!

My 'Indy' bag is an unissued 1941 MK VI. I picked it up while fishing off the Bay of E :)
I really like the hidden back pockets on it. Perect size for my passport when I go on my honeymoon in...just under 6 weeks! Wow, time is flying - still got to write my vows and my speech for the wedding first, or Laura (my fiancee) may just :whip: and I'd have to :Plymouth:

Allow me to help. Just use the vows from Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon:

Priest: Do you, Ming the Merciless, Ruler of the Universe take this Earthling, Dale Arden to be your Empress of the hour?

Ming: (pause) of the hour, Yes.

Priest: Do you promise to use her as you will?

Ming: (pause, then very slyly) Certainly!

Priest: Not to blast her into space?

Ming: (silence)

Priest: ....Until such time as you get the whim....?

Ming: I do.

Dale: I DO NOT!!

 Okay, I'll climb back into my trunk now. :CR:

I got mine from a place that specilizes in MG car parts.
I think it's called the roadster shop, orsomething like that.
I think they're still around and only carried MK VI's.

I went out to an antique mall yesterday with the express intent to see what sort of stuff I could find in the military surplus booth. I was crossing my fingers (beyond hope I figured) for an MK VII.

Didn't find one. But I did find an MK VI prominently displayed in a glass case.

I hope you're all sitting down.

He wanted $120 for it.

On a positive and kinda unrelated note-- he had some pinks-- a shirt and pants for $25 and $15 respectively. I wasn't able to try them on, but I guesstimated the size (they weren't tagged) and decided to get them. To my surprise, they are exactly my size. Even the pants are hemmed to the exact length-- fate.

The shirt, as with any shirt on me, is too small in the collar, but the rest fits golden. It's missing two buttons as well, but they're pretty ordinary and shouldn't be hard to replace. But the pants just scream Indy.

In retrospect, I should have snapped a picture of the MK VI-- I was pretty shocked by the price though.

$120

Still ther has been a trend over the past 10 years or so here in the UK that has seen the price of British WWII uniforms and equipment going up and up in value.

US and German stuff was the high price stuff, and british kit was realy at a give away price.
I can remeber seeing MKVII bags for £2 or £3 ,now your lucky if you find one for less than £30 and I've seen them up to £70.

I did suggest these vows to Laura a while ago. Unfortunately her response would be the same as Dale's :(
I'll have to find something else...

You could always go the Princess Bride route:

Looking menancing at the officiant: "Just skip to the end and say 'man and wife'."

Oh, and, um, yeah, look at all the stores listed above for that MKVI.

One hundred...and twenty??? :Dietrich:

Man...

Thanks for the leads, guys, I'll dig around. Considering I just got a couple of unissued MK VII's (yep, Sevens) for $40 each, paying more than $20 for MK VI's (sixes) seems like a crime! ;) I remember buying ratty MK VII's for $10, and VI's in any condition for 5-10. About a year after I joined here Soldier Of Fortune figured out what the interest in MK VII's was about and BOOM!

Well I went to Endicotts on saturday afternoon and got myself two unissued MKVI bags.

One is a H&S made 1941 version with embossed snaps and has the rings attached with a loop of cotten webbing. The same webbing as used in the soulder strap.
The second is by M&Co dated 1941,has smooth snaps and the rings are attached with a loop made from the same material as the bag.

Both are in first class condition with only a small amount of "white rust" to the zinc galvanize rings. Most of which will rub off with a dry cloth. Not bad for a 69 year old bag.

At £15.95(around $24) its probabley the best price you'll find on this bag.
They do have some in a used condition at a lower price, but for what they are asking for the best ones I didn't bother with them.

None of the bags they have had the three vent holes seen in the bottom of the TOD bag.
