Re: The Federation IV Display Page
Greetings all. I received my new Fed IV yesterday. Very nice indeed. Not sure about the blocking style I will end up with. As you will see I gave it a quick LC look as I was running between film shoots. After seeing what Penman can do with one of these I may be going that route. Very nice work! Anyway enjoy the photos!

I've only had my hat for 4 months but I can't see it ever having a taper problem. Unless of course you do this...Travelsonic wrote:On my Youtube video a guy is ranting about the current Akubra Federations, complaining about taper and other issues, anybody experience a degrade in quality, or is this a guy making a big deal over 1 bad hat kinda thing?
Luke Warmwater wrote:Well, after numreous rainstorms, swimming in the Potomac River, digging out from Snowpocalypse, mine did develop a taper.
The only problem I have with my hat is it has a CS look instead of an LC but thats not really a problem of Akubra.
I love my hat......

Re: The Federation IV Display Page
how do you grab your hat? By the crown or the brim as your "supposed" too?
Is grabbing it by the crown something only really seen in Hollywood (since fedoras aren't normally worn) or did people back in the day grab the crown all the time since buying a new fedora was easy back then?

i always grab mine by the crown ! maybe a habit i should break. cause i can see it leading to oil from your fingers leaving a satin on the crown in the spot you grab it at .

I've just always heard you will eventually wear a hole in the pinch.....
Yet in all the movies, even the old ones I generally see people grab their hats by the pinch. But at the same time, back then you could easily replace your hat. Today its not as easy and more expensive.......

Re: The Federation IV Display Page
I grab mine by the crown... not necessarily by the pinch though. It can lead to a hole in the pinch (especially if you have a tight raiders pinch) though it's not necessarily something that's going to happen really fast though. I grab my hat further back on the crown, near the back of the dents. I use my right hand, pinching the forefinger and thumb together between the top of the right dent and the center dent, and my pinky finger goes in and up under the top of the left dent.

Re: The Federation IV Display Page
Hi! This is my first post in a while. I thought I'd like to share a few pics with you from a trip I recently took with my Faithful Fed IV to the Glastonbury Festival here in the UK.
Notorious for it's rainstorms, I expected the hat to get a thorough soaking at some point. Surprisingly, this years festival was incredibly hot and sunny for the whole 6 days I was there, with not a drop of rain. As a result, the whole site was a giant dust-bowl - which was just perfect for my Fed!
I call this look "The Streets of Glasto"...
I bought this hat especially for the festival in fact. Last year I took a pretty nice Christy's Adventurer which did get drenched, then tapered horrendously. I decided after that experience that I had to have a lid that would stand up to the elements a bit better. So far the Akubra hasn't let me down. In fact, I'm sure if it hadn't been for this hat, I'd have been flat out with sun-stroke!
By the way - the "noggin shots" of this hat are not flattering to either the hat, or me!

Here's a shot of my Fed IV with me in it...
Re: The Federation IV Display Page
Brim, all the way. I may place my hand on the crown to steady the hat as I put it on, but I never pinch the hat to take it off or put it on. My Fed III does have finger oil stains that I don't suppose will ever come out from where I grabbed it. Grabbing a hat by the pinch will eventually wear a hole in the felt. May take several years, but continued use this way will eventually lead to this happening.backstagejack wrote:how do you grab your hat? By the crown or the brim as your "supposed" too?

Hehe... I don't have an idol prop yet. No Indy collectibles over here... The only idol I've seen is the Mighty Muggs idol, which I don't like.

Re: The Federation IV Display Page
Wore my charcoal grey fed all weekend in Canyon Lake, Texas on a camping trip. I tore the lining out to make it less hot. Worked really well. While everyone else was fending off the bugs, my lid was keeping them off me.
Sadly, no pics at the moment.....

Here's another shot of the hat... this time on my daughter's head.
*EDIT*
Whoops! Wrong thread!!! I thought this was the photo of her wearing my Fed... apparently not.
This was supposed to be in the Christy's thread, hahaha!!!

You know, I'd bet Hatsdirect would exchange that one for you if you sent them a picture of the ribbon. That looks....not right.

That ribbon really does not look right. I'm sure they'll take it back and exchange it.

Re: The Federation IV Display Page
Looks like something came undone. It's very possible that it didn't make it out akubra or hats direct's door looking like that. Everything about that bow tells me it used to look like the one on your fed deluxe. I'm sure they'll correct the problem, but it still might be cheaper and faster to have it done stateside, as you originally considered.

My new fed IV came with the ribbon like that, too. It just may be the way they stitch the ribbon to the regular fed IV. Nothing on my hat was loose, so I slightly changed it a bit.

As long as nothing is damaged and my ribbon fix doesn't fail, I am happy with my Federation IV.theinterchange wrote:I had a Regular in the past and the bow looks like the one on my Deluxe. Plus, this is the first of all the Akubra styles I've bought to have a bad looking ribbon, so it comes as a surprise.NoodlesBubblesBeans wrote:My new fed IV came with the ribbon like that, too. Randy,
Looks good. Much better pic of the hat's color in natural light. Is the ribbon brown? Did you fix the bow yourself?

Randy,
If you get the chance please post some pics of the bow side of the hat in natural light. I think you own a couple of hats from other vendors. How does the Akubra stack up (felt, pounce, sweat, fit, etc)?

Re: The Federation IV Display Page
Nice hat, IC. I also own an Akubra "Tablelands" hat which is a wide brimmed "Aussie" type, similiar to this color. They also sell as an option, a braded Kangaroo leather band, which is a good way to round out an adventuring type hat.
Re: The Federation IV Display Page
Probably old news, but do the terms Heritage and Imperial mean?

Re: The Federation IV Display Page
Randy, that hat looks great on you! The tawny fawn is also a very nice choice- it looks really good with the darker ribbon. I wouldn't mess with the pinch if I were you. I speak from experience; don't overwork the felt by reshaping it too many times.
Anyway, great looking hat and you wear it well!
