Re: Raiders " This is it"
Saw these on Bookface and was impressed.
So much so that I had to send you an email about some possible work on a hat.
Always impressed by your work, keep it up.

I actually just commented on your FaceBook album... hehe.
Beautiful... I love how it looks! Too bad I can't afford one.

"This is it" is an understatement - those pics could have come from the set of "Raiders"! That hat looks like it's seen some time on Harrison's noggin' for sure. Excellent job!

Well, I don't know if it's the pictures or the work, but that one stands out, even in the sea of good work you've put out. I don't bother to comment on Raiders hats from anyone anymore (mostly cuz I'm lazy), but this one was worthy of the effort!

That second picture IS THE RAIDERS HAT I see when I close my eyes. You truly are a master of your craft, John.

The crown looks short, especially in the 4th pic - right side profile, at least compared to so many other 'Raider' hats Ive seen here. Is this just due to the pic, or maybe the angle?

Could be the pic but this hat is for a very small size head. I don't make one size specs for every person. I do customize them for each person.

I kind of like the way the crown looks shorter. Don't know if it would look good on ME, but I think it flatters the hat.

Re: Raiders " This is it"
The open crown is 5 3/8. I think most people think the open crown height is taller than it is. Now that I look at the photo again, it could be the angle of the shot it was taken at. Straight on it looks tall.
Scottyrocks, if I go by the hat in your avatar. Then yes my hat here is to short but you hat is way to tall of a crown.

Re: Raiders " This is it"
I caught your tongue in cheek remark. Accuracy of a Raiders fedora, I have maintained for awhile now, is in the eyes of the beholder. That is how we can gets pics of a Raiders hat that the fan feels is dead on, while others don't see it that way. An example of this deal is I recall a guy saying here that my CS hats don't look like the film hats(Indy 4) This is a great example of accuracy being in the eyes of the beholder. I think the truth is, if a fairly straight sided block is used, regardless of shape of dome, amount of taper or lack of it on the front and back, you are in the ballpark, and small nuances are not "caught" by everyone. At the end of the day, if the customer is happy, that is all that matters, at least to that customer.
Re: Raiders " This is it"
They all look spot on to me. For me, the hardest part is getting the bash right. I know that John puts the bash in, but during transport and with the time required to train the felt, I know mine needed a little tweak here and there. How do you get that reverse taper thing going on shown in the 2nd shot?

You need glasses. This is SA used ribbon ( same as AB ) The crown creased heights are the same as the movie. This looks nothing like a fed. Makes me wonder how good a eye you have for jackets.
Re: Raiders " This is it"
If you mean the Fed IV, then being the owner of both, they are completely different when you have them in your hand. John's are far superior in every way._ wrote:Looks like a Fed to me. Short crown. Wrong ribbon. JMO...

Was just looking again. You think it looks short in all the photos? I was thinking that the 2nd shot looked tall._ wrote:Looks like a Fed to me. Short crown. Wrong ribbon. JMO...
Did they lower the crown on the Fed IV compared to the original Fed? My Fed IV's crown is defo lower than John's. Leaving aside the quality of John's hats, the materials and the craftsmanship, I pefer the block shape on John's new Raiders to my Fed IV. Not to say that I don't like my Fed IV though. Can't really comment in the case of the original Fed.
One man's meat is another man's poison, I guess.

Re: Raiders " This is it"
Just to stick my head in the door, the Fed IV's were blocked on pre-war Akubra blocks to more closely represent a base for recreating the CS style, not the Raiders style.

It looks short. The pics I see on a 47 HD monitor make the ribbon look cheap. In fairness, ribbon does not always photograph well.
But I've seen many - including yours. I've also been impressed by yours. In my opinion - and I've even had a few well respected hat makers name an Indy fedora after me - I'm not that impressed.
Now, I don't like you personally. But I can separate that from admiring your work. I just don't admire this one. I respect your work enough that I got a little excited over the title. What I saw? Eh?
So, be a big boy and keep the snide remarks out. I gave an honest opinion.
I would love to comment on your post but we all know that it wouldn't stay a post for
Long.

I expected more because I've been impressed by your work. It's really that simple.
First off if you can separate your feelings towards me and my work. How come the first and only time you post about my work is a short negative comment?
by your own statement. If you cant go by photos of ribbon why comment on it in the first place?
I welcome any comment , good or bad from anyone but you. I gave you a snide remark because you do it so often to so many others I thought you could take it. Im so sorry but I was wrong.

Okay, kids, cool it down. The bottom line is this: everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and the expression therein, but there's no need to throw knives back and forth over it. 'Nuff said.
