How to distress a jacket ToD style

Post by Kredepops »

I got a Wested ToD jacket a month ago. I immediately began distressing it, because IMO the ToD jacket is the most beautifully distressed jacket in all the movies. Especially the jacket Indy wears at the very end in the village is fantastic.

I've used sandpaper, gaffa tape, steel wool and a good ol' fashioned beating to distress it. I've also dyed it a bit darker and used brown shoe polish on it.

Before I show you my distressing work though, I need some advice on how to distress the sleeves.

Image
This shows exactly what I'd like to achieve. I've already tried several times to wet the sleeves and push them up so they'll wrinkle while drying... but it seems like a more dramatic approach was used with this jacket... any thoughts?

I'm a huge fan of natural distressing - but to get the results you want you have to wear it every day you can tolerate it. It's an awkward idea in the middle of July.

I have a stone wall that needs to be repaired and cooler weather is coming... you can wear your leather jacket while helping me out! That will get the jacket distressed soon enough.

Thanks _ - I'll try that! I've only used cold water up until now. Acetone, right - I've got some of that :)

Renderking Fisk - hehe, thanks for the offer, I'm in Denmark though - you in the U.S.? I used to be all about the natural distressing but since I don't rough it up as much as Mr. Jones it would take me 20 years of daily wear before getting anywhere close to the used look I want :) Its funny once I started I just can't stop! It's too much fun distressing jackets.

Hey, if you're every in the country... the offer is still open. If you ever do make it over, we can take turns dragging each other through the woods on the tractor.

I think the sleeves are the hardest part to naturally distress in most circumstances. But the question I have for a lot of folks is, when do you know when to stop?

As far as the sleeves go, perhaps that look was acheived by wetting the sleeves, pushing them up, and twisting them inward at the same time. The reason I'm saying that is because of the way the creases spiral downward at the bicep. That action might cause some creasing, due to the tension created by the twisting. Any thoughts?

If you keep the jacket wet and just wear it for a while like that, all sorts of aging occurs. I got a lot of cool puckering in certain areas of my washed goat by doing that.

WOW thanks Indiego Jones!

I really take pride (and TIME) in my distressing methods. I guess it's the OCD side of me. I will say this though, lambskin is by far the easiest leather to distress IMO.

Thanks for the kind words :TOH:

I admit I forgot about this thread I started. I think some of you may have seen the pics of my 1:1 ToD Indy, but I thought I'd post some pics of my distressed ToD Wested Jacket here too. I spent alot of time working on it with steelwool, sandpaper, watered-down black dye, beating it up and rubbing it with brown shoe polish.

nice work.

we dont see many temple of dooms out there now these days. this and every Indy board is DOMINATED with Raiders jacket.

I personally really like the Temple of doom. it's different. and I would like one. and from wested becuz IMO wested makes the best temple jacket.

Guys,

Since you're talking about TOD jacket. I do know the LC is pretty different from Raiders and TOD.
But what is the difference between the Raiders and the TOD jacket? And forgive my lack of knowledge...

Another question: although I prefer natural distressing, i recently distressed my raiders just using cold water and sandpaper on the areas I desired: http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz50 ... CF6699.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My jacket lost a lot of its shining. Do you think it would be a good idea to rub some brown shoe polish? The purpose is solely to take the shine away?

cheers

Very slim cut, small pockets and a chunky zipper to start with, others here could elaborate more.

the temple jacket stands out as something cut differently then all jackets.

the yoke is lower then LC/CS even. the jacket has no correct collarstand. the zipper is big metal No.8 zipp. the pockets are VERY small. the jacket has no correct and funtional bi swing. the jacket cut is a slim pattern with high armholes and tube like sleeves. the lining has gussets. the stormflap is 1.25'' wide. the buckles are two pronged tri glides. short straps.

Uh, i guess i have no further questions... hehe. Thanks Holt!!!
Yeah, the pockets are noticeable smaller in TOD's.

Now I see that my Raiders Wested has small pockets (at least they seem like TOD's) and has the snap button (from LC). I've got the standard raiders lambskin at wested (i went there personally at the shop and tried one that i liked and fitted me)... so, i seems I won a hybrid Raiders/TOD/LC... :-k

here's a overall pic o my jaclet before i distressed it:

hehe. lol.

Nice jacket, it aint raiders or temple tho. I can tell your jacket is an of the rack LC model. look at the collarband config on the temple and raiders jacket pictures above. your collarband is cut of and does not extend on the stormflap like the temple and raiders. and that is correct for LC. that and the collar lapels and the big wide stormflap. the one thing the of the rack model LC's have wrong is the tall pockets and the pointy flaps. pockets should be smaller with a big beefy scalloped flap.

Yeah, Holt... you're right but when I was at Wested, I bought the standard ROLA lambskin:
http://www.wested.com/raiders-of-lost-a ... -103-p.asp

But the picture does not represent what they actually have. I remember when I was at Wested, they told me the ROLA lambskin jacket they had was modified for a more street wearing: it had the Raiders cut and colour but with LC details: snap button (which might explain the cut on the collar, because it needs to be cut to have the snap button) and long pockets. My jacket also fits kinda slim on me.

I don't actually care about SA (I wouldn't notice the differences in the details if someone didn't tell me). BUT, I think it's weird to see Wested mixing different styles in one jacket. And the pictures they have in their website do not show the real deal.

I love my Wested, being Raiders or LC (or both). Here's a couple of pics with me wearing it after a distressing:

Thanks guys. Glad you like the distressing :D

I rubbed it with brown shoe polish because the leather Wested used had a more yellowish shine to it rather than red (which I prefer). So when I removed some of the colour with sandpaper and gaffers tape, the distressing was more grey than light red/brown. So I rubbed it with this dark brownish shoepolish and the distressed areas just soak it up.

If you want to just remove the shine I recommend just giving it a cold shower.

Great looking jackets guys BTW.

Thanks Kredepops,

Then I am in the right path. I've been giving the jacket some cold showr... also, I rubbed some alcohol all over the jacket, just to take the shine... but I did this only once. Will keep with the showers...
