Where to buy hats?

Post by TD235 »

Does anyone know of a brick and mortar store that sells quality mens hats? or Is that totally a thing of the past and I'm just dreaming? I'm not looking for an Indy hat persay.... Just quality good looking hats.

I see all kinds of Cowboy hats, Baseball caps, and the cheap little fedoras teenagers buy at Walmart, Target, and the like for $20 bucks.

Good luck, TD235!

There are not many stores out there that sell a variety of hats. I don't think there is a big enough market to sustain a brick and mortar store. Down here in AZ there are a lot of cowboy hats. That's about it. I know of one guy that makes custom hats but that is few and far between...

I'm sure others will chime in with ideas.

Pete

I've seen a hat store down music row in Nashville a few years back that had a couple very nice looking fedoras in the window, so you may so a search in there, seeing you, too, are located here in Tennessee. :TOH:

There is Mr. Hats in Memphis TN. I've only been in a couple of times, but it was for supplies, not a hat. I can't really speak to the quality of their hats, but I don't think any of them are custom jobs.

Greeley Hat Works here in Greeley, Colorado. I've been in the store a few times, and they definitely cater to the cowboys, but they have a lot of good hat care products, and can probably help with any kind of lid. When I was hat searching in my pre-COW days, they got good reviews from guys on the Fedora Lounge website.

Friendly staff, too. I actually took an "official" Indy wool felt fedora to them to have it re-bashed. It was a Christmas gift from my mother-in-law, and wasn't a bad hat(although a bit small), but I couldn't stand the teardrop bash. The owner confirmed with me exactly how I wanted it bashed, and did it for me for twenty bucks.

Byrnie Utz hats in downtown Seattle. Classic hat store, with the display cases, wood shelves, steamers, and everything else they've had for the last 60 years.

Anyone coming to the Seattle area, make it a stop!

Just a tip when searching in a new area for a hat maker or seller, try searching using the word milliner or millinery. it actually turns up more results than "hatter" or "hat maker", and you don't have to wade through all the Alice in Wonderland references.

Also, if you get over to Gettysburg, PA, make a stop into Dirty Billy's shop:

He makes excellent period hats (and not just Civil War.)

I realize this is an old thread, but having recently traveled to Estes Park, I would add Colorado Hats. Very friendly, and small husband and wife team. They have experience making Indiana Jones hats.

Since this thread was started, Mike at Northwest Hats has opened a brick and mortar store in Eugene, OR.

I have a couple of non-Indy hats from Mike bought online, not in person, and they are top notch.
