How do you store your leather jacket?
So I'm just wondering how most of you ladies and gents store your Indy jackets? Wire hanger? Wood hanger? When I asked Tony Nowak this question he told me to "throw it on the floor and not worry about it". So what's your ideal way?

Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
Throw it on the floor, but make sure the liner is not exposed! It's okay to get dust/dog hair/cat hair on the outside of the jacket... but keep it out of the liner, or it could get itchy
Note: the precaution is not necessary in a clean environment with no pets or hairless pets.
Another Note: If you have a wife/mother/neatfreak room mate/someone else who will not tolerate garments on the floor, you must hang it somehow... doesn't really matter how, as long as THEY approve.
One last Note: It's a leather jacket, not a baby... once you condition it, it'll be fine. Running over it with a tractor is not recommended, but there's no harm to be had if it's not hanging up in the "right" way. I can't remember the last time mine saw a coat hanger....

Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
keep the cheap jackets on the hangers....these are the ones that i want to get the hanger marks on so i can justify to the wife that i need another jacket....LOL
the better jackets go on wider shoulder hangers......which will eventually wear in the shoulders, so these can be replaced later rather than sooner.
my good stuff goes in dust bags under the bed or under the hanging shirts. these you keep forever. fold once across the arms, and one time in half, top to bottom. then ensure that they are stacked with the heaviest jackets at the bottom. never stack over 2 jackets on top of each other (and the top has to be like lambskin). with my OC jacket disorder, i've found out that there is ALOT of storage space under the bed.
of course, the 'go to' jacket lays on a pile on the floor for the next day's service

Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
I experiment with every leather jacket. Basically, I test every free hanger I own with it. If one seems not to show evidence of possible hanger marks down the road, it get hung up. I watch it for the first week to be sure it's ok.
Any jacket I fail to find a good hanger for get folded (as G described) and placed on a shelf in my closet (stacked as G said, again).
Such methods work best with lots of space or few jackets.
Interesting note; I find that heavier jackets, like the US Wings CE Cowhide, do better on hangers than the light, thin leathers, like goat and lambskin.

Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
Hanger marks? What is this? I have never heard of hanger marks. I just hang my Wested on a wood hanger I got from a fancy hotel (who told me I could keep it), and that's it. It hangs on that hanger for months and months and months and months. Then, when it's cold enough to wear again, I get it out. I have never noticed any "hanger marks."
Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
I have 6 large plastic containers (28 inches by 15 inches and about 17 inches deep) with no lids for mine. I fold them (roughly) and sit them in these which are stacked on shelves. I have around 12 leather jackets, but only 2 Indy's. Hangers can and do stretch jackets around the shoulder area. It usually takes several months or years for this to occur, or if you hang the thing when wet. Most noticable in areas where there is significant air moisture.
Remember if you have cotton linings and the jacket is left on the floor for extended periods, pests like moths can come along and eat at the lining.

Store? Mine is on my body 24 hours a day. I just take it off to reach my back in the shower and then right back on again!
I have a Wested that's rested happily on a wide wooden hanger for 10 years and has never shown any signs of stretching, etc.

Indiana Jeff
Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
I just hang mine using the leather loop in the jacket.
Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
I babied mine for a couple of months on the best hanger I could find, now it's mostly lives on the floor!

Just hanging from a hanger behind me in my office.
I agree with Strider.
Never seen anything that looks like a hanger mark either.
Can't beat a Wested.

Wood hanger - never had any problems.
Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
For my jackets it is usually the floor or a suit hanger.
Just to explain what I mean by suit hanger, one of these:

Same here, and the jackets have there own closet in my office. I will also drape them on the back of a chair or lay them across the back of the couch if I feel I am going to be in and out of the house.Indydawg wrote:I hang them on heavy duty, wide, wooden hangers...like the suit hanger that Gert just showed....

In the corner of my "man cave", there is an office chair. On that office chair is a pretty large pile of leather jackets.

too be screen accurate you must hang the jacket in a near by closet so it can be roughly thrown in to a suit case at a moments notice ! never did we hear indy say " hang on marcus , i'll just go get my jacket from under the bed "

Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
i agree with you strider....i don't see hanger marks on my westeds. this is because the leather's elasticity/weight ratio is not an issue. if you're stable is filled with jackets that are quite heavy and made of more pliable leather, hangers is not an option....unless you want to replace those too.
i put my westeds on just a plastic hanger that are just a slight upgrade from wire hangers and they're doing okay thus far (maybe 2 years and going). i've got a lambskin shirt jacket that went on the same thing and got hanger nipples happening......had to toss it cuz i didn't want to look like this dude:
btw......is that striated lamb i see?

Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
my wested and horsehide a-2 are laid flat on their sides on 2 boxes I put in the closet, I found that when not put on a hanger for the summer they fit me better and drape nicer this is just what worked for me. I think some where _ mentioned not to put a leather jacket on any hanger and I found for me he was right.

If it's not on me, then it's on a wooden hanger in the hall closet where it can get back on me at a moment's notice.

I don't have a leather jacket at the moment (that should change with one of Sarge's offering this month); when I did I just left it laying around on a chair.

Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
For the last few years, every leather jacket I owned went up on a wooden, wide-shoulder hanger. However, I've noticed that my jackets tend to adapt a 'squarish' collar look as a result, since you're essentially conditioning the jacket to 'fit' the hanger by leaving it there for long periods of time. And so when worn, the collars don't fully 'drape' over my neck.
I've recently been experimenting with my latest leather jacket, and just lying it flat on the floor/sofa/bed/etc whenever not in use, and so far, the neck seems to 'drape' better as a result, I would assume.

Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
Weird. As I noted, my heavier jackets do better on hangers. Also, I had a lambskin Wested that couldn't go NEAR a hanger, but I have 2 US Wings and a Magnoli (all some form of cowhide) hanging with no marks. So, it's not a an advantage of a Wested. I think size makes a difference, as well as hanger choice. Jackets in my size tend to be significantly wider than most hangers are made for, so only the wider, "suit hanger" types work... if they work at all. Regular size hangers (even many suit hangers) fall so short of the proper shoulder that even the right "elasticity/weight ratio" won't always help. However, there is little doubt in my mind that the exact nature of specific hide plays a role. Again, I think experimentation is key. Heck, I have to be careful about the hangers I pick for SHIRTS. It's no fun wearing XXL in a Medium World!Indiana G wrote:i agree with you strider....i don't see hanger marks on my westeds. this is because the leather's elasticity/weight ratio is not an issue. if you're stable is filled with jackets that are quite heavy and made of more pliable leather, hangers is not an option....unless you want to replace those too.

Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
For what it's worth, when I received my Indy Antique Cow Hide HERO jacket there was a black coat hanger in the box. (It's one of the thicker hangers that gets wider at the end where the shoulders of a jacket rest.) A hanger wasn't in the first box but was in the second box when I exchanged my jacket. Also, as per the Wings website, they recommend hanging a jacket on a thick hanger as this will help wrinkles to fall out. On some other websites, claims were made that hanging a jacket will help it to ultimately drape better as well.

I've used those thick hangers that Wings has provided for years with absolutely no problems.
Not all mine came with a hanger, but for those that did, I've used the heck out of those big thick hangers.

Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
My Wested lives on a wooden peg by the front door pretty much year round - when it's not on me, that is. Sometimes for travel it gets stuffed into a suitcase or crammed into any available crevice in the packed car. I didn't buy an authentic reproduction of the world's greatest adventurer's jacket so I could baby it on a suit hanger.

Yes.
I have never considered hanging my jackets for the same reason... though some gearheads keep their stuff looking pristine.
To each his/her own (the stuff isn't cheap). Mine get tossed on a closet shelf, though I do make sure the collars lay flat.
Cheers, H

Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
i have a jacket hanger rack that you nail to the wall thats where i hang my jacket . and it seems to do nicely
Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
I use one of those wide blazer hangers to avoid the unsightly shoulder dips that can form from prolonged hanging.
Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
On a chair, just sort of thrown there. One bit of advice, the advantage of the Indy jacket over some authentic A-2s is there are no knit cuffs. If you have wool knit cuffs on a jacket, make sure to pick up a couple little bags of cedar (they have them at the Container Store) and stick those around the knits... just to keep the beasties away should they be so bold.
As for the Indy jacket, I agree, leave it off the hanger when it's not on your back.

I just toss mine either on the floor, couch, chair, or anywhere.
Re: How do you store your leather jacket?
As of this morning, my Todd's was tossed in the backseat, partially covered by a shopping bag full of MRE accessory packs, a pair of camo sneakers, a large metal thermos, and Shiva knows what all else.
It's pretty much covered from sun exposure, with all that junk on it.
Better shake it out and throw it in my beat-up leather suitcase with the rest of my gear until the next adventure (or it gets cold enough to warrant it.)

When the weather's cooler and I'm wearing the jacket regularly, it ends up "roughing it' at night on the bedroom floor.
