Newbie question

Post by afalzon »

Hi guys,

If my head measures 21.65 inches which I believe translates to hat size 6 7/8
and I order size 7, will I be in trouble?

Should I order exactly what my head measures?

thanks for your reply in advance

The most advisable course of action is to send the company your head measurements with the question what size they would advise, as the size-charts are different from company to company. The shouldn't be, but for some reason they are ;)

I've got to second Geert's response. DO NOT rely on any one sizing chart, but rather, contact the seller and have them confirm what size would be best for you. That is the only way to ensure that you did everything you could to get the right sized hat.

I'm going to chime in here with sort of a hybrid answer that covers both the question you're asking, and the question I wish you were asking

When it comes to determining your hat size, I definitely agree with everyone else that sending your measurements to the hatter of your choice and let them determine which hat size of theirs will be the closest to your noggin. However, if it's a factory hat that you're going after, I'd be sure to ask the person why they recommend the size that they do. The reason I say this is that I reach the conclusion that I'm also a 55, or 6 7/8, whenever I measure my head, and that's the size I usually choose to buy, and it usually works out fine (ocassionally snug, and usually factory made), and a size 56 or 7 is always too big as well. The only time I chose to go with a 7 when I had the option of 6 7/8 was when I got my Akubra Fed IV, and that was recommended by Ron at Hats Direct because the hats supposedly run a half size small, and that a size up would shrink with time. I told him that 6 7/8 in the older Feds fit just fine, and thats what he used to determine that a 7 would be my best bet, and I have to say I regretted it. It never quite shrank as much as I wanted, and even if the 6 7/8 would've been a tad snug, I'd have preferred to just use a hat stretcher to make it fit better.

So (and this is just my opinion here, and I encourage others to chime in as well) if the hatter tells you to go with a particular size because they run small (or possibly even large for that matter) I would let myself make the call, and consider if I'd rather stretch a hat that might be snug, or wait for/try to shrink a hat that's a tad large.

Thanks for your comments and replies people, however, there's no hat seller to contact.

It's a campaign hat (lemon squeezer) that I am interested in, off ebay, the seller is no hat expert.

Anyway, thanks again.

Does the seller offer returns and refunds if it doesn't fit?

Or ask the seller to measure the circumference of the hat and give the actual measurement in inches or cm.

you wont get an accurate one like that.

There is a little trick that you can use. Have the seller take blue tape that you use for painting. Have them tape around the inside of the hat ( sweatband). make a mark on the tape. Then take the tape off the sweatband and lay it flat on the a table. Get out you ruler, yard stick, or tape measure and measure the blue tape. This should get you a very close measurement.

That's essentially what I meant, just wasn't specific enough to say measure the inside circumference of the hat i.e. the sweatband. Using tape is a good idea to be as close to accurate as you can get.

I didn't manage to get the campaign hat from the ebay seller.

I found it at soldiercity.com but they do not have my size 6 7/8
Actually, nobody seems to have this size!!!!

I am looking for the olive green version of the hat, the same one that USMC drill instructors wear.

Any ideas where to get one?

From a USMC drill instructor? :anxious:

You might be able to try a 6 7/8 and stuff the sweatband to bulk it up to size. Keep looking, though, as one may turn up yet.

Sir Yes Sir! And actually, from my own experience, a 7 might actually fit well, as those things tend to be stiff, and sometimes run small. I know I've tried on stiff 6 7/8 hats (my size) and have experienced a sensation I like to call "pain of the cranium."
