So I just tried this with my Penman LC. At first I was kind of worried... I haven't really abused this hat in any kind of way before. I just wear it... a lot. So I rolled it up, held it there for a while, and unrolled it. It came out perfect! Just like it was before!

I always knew a Penman could take a beating... I was just hesitant to do it with my own Penmans! Guess I just shouldn't worry about it too much!

but what if the hat lays rolled up over time (2-3 days or more) in a rucksack pocket? will it pop back to it's original shape then? that's something that should be tested

On the ABs and Penmans, I would say, you could leave it rolled up for as long as you needed. 2 to 3 days isn't gonna change anything. Due to the nature of beaver fur felt. As most know, who own either, this is very durable felt, and a roll up isn't really doing anything harmful to the felt itself. The main worry on a felt Raiders fedora is the felt breaking over time, at the tight front pinch. That front pinch is more hazardous to a felt hat than a roll up would ever be. Fedora

but what about the sweatband? will it hold? the stitching and so on? i tried rolling up my akubra. it went well. it pop'd right back to it's original shape but the sweatband got a bit wrinkled here and there and because of that the brim bulge a little at those spots(but it does give the hat a little more character though)

I'm just not sure I'm that daring to roll up my hat like that. Maybe once it gets older and no longer serves as a "dress" hat.

I wouldn't roll up a akubra. They wire they use as a reed can get kinked and ounce it does get bent a little its done.

That's right! I had forgotten about what they use as reeds. I used to pull mine out back when I was buying alot of those hats. Fedora

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a "reed" in a fedora?

Trust me... rolling up an Akubra does NOT do the reed any good!!!

Thank you Nick for posting this pick. All the kinks are the wire reed that is at the very edge of the sweatband that is all misshapen. Ounce you get a kink in the wire it's done. Plastic reeds just don't do this. The reed serves a purpose so everyone don' go pulling it out for no good reason.

You know, I just thought about something. In real old hats, the reeds were, well, reeds. And they would break if you rolled up a regular hat. In that era, they also sold roll up hats, generally came with a tube to store them in. In these hats, there were no reeds, to break. And this is the reason, there was a differentation between regular dress hats and roll up dress hats.

Today, all reeding material, well except Akubras, are nylon, like the stuff you use on your weed eater. Which allows for rolling up a hat, where in the old days, they used natural products, that would break. I guess innovation was good for hatting, in so far as reeds are concerned.

I am with John. Don't remove your reeds. They do serve an important purpose as they keep the sweatband flanged, or flared. But in the case of that Akubra pictured above, I would have to take that baby out! Looks uncomfortable. Just be sure to put the ferrule back in for the seam to look good. Fedora

I regularly roll up my year-old Henry. It looks like this:

For comparison, this is what it looked like the day I got it: :)

Ouch! Looks like we need a video tutorial on how to maintain the creases in a hat. :D Fedora

I'd love to see that. The center dent always loses its shape in my hats... :)

Oak,

Love your videos. Do you think you will ever put up a "CS Bash Tutorial" anytime soon? Maybe even with my hat again like you did with the Raiders video.

Geez, you wouldn't want to see me doing the CS crease? Afterall, I creased the hats for the film. Does that count? (OK, ok. perhaps Bernie did refine em a bit more.) :CR: Fedora

I didn't have any in the works and now that you are making videos I'll leave the CS bash vid up to you ol' buddy. I think you have done a few? ;) Heck I would like to see myself how you crease any hat. I think it would be very interesting to see how different we go about coming to the same results.

Steve,

I think I can speak for all of us here when I say you making that video would be awesome. I hope you get a chance to do it with your busy schedule. Hope to see it soon.

Slight hijack here, but what are the differences in construction between a roll-up hat and a, err, non-rollable one?

I'm guessing it comes down to the presence or absence of both the reed and shellac in the felt. Is there anything else, such as the grade or weight of the felt?

How does the lack of a reed affect the hat in day to day use?

I've got an AB Deluxe on order, and am toying with seeing if I could get it modified (when it finally turns up) to be a foldable hat.

I think Steve just rolled up his own AB in that video, I don't think you need to ask for a rollable one. The AB will roll up just fine :) It does have a reed, just in the AB hats the reed is nylon and will not kink or break like the metal reed in the FedIV.

That's my understanding anyway - Someone please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :TOH:

Yeah, this is neat information and very useful for those who want/need to pack their hats for travel, but in my case, I WEAR my hat when I travel, so it's nothing I'll do myself.

Ok, _, you're french toast. Not sure WHY you wanted that, but hey, glad to help! :TOH:
