It also backs up the notion that multiple hats were hurredly customized, etc., with the ribbon tacked on above the brim break. I wonder if all of them were this way, or just the hero fedora?

I'm pretty excited to finally see a Penman SOC - aside from the one pictured in John's brochure of course.

I have waffled on where to put the stitches. I used to put them low, like it should be, but these days when replicating the Raiders fedora, I put them high, like the original. Afterall, its a replication. And this was part of how the Raiders fedora was made. Of course, I will put them low if the customer wants it like that. Fedora

So, the high stitches were on purpose and not just serendipitous?

Oak, what's going on in the new avatar? It's too tiny! (Scottish accent)

Yeah sure is. You know on the Raiders fedora, the bow work and where they sewed in the sweats was proper and good. They then tacked on the ribbon rather high, and not the general place to put these retaining stitches. Just another peculararity of the Raiders fedora. Fedora

Forgive me, Fedora and John, for I posted this question on the 'Penman Post'em' page, but do those high tack down stitiches actually actually help keep the 'stove pipe' look in place? Does it fight taper at all? If not, other than screen accuracy, I don't see the upside. My Henry experiences the 'ride up'. I don't mind it, but I'm thinking for my handmade hat, the more sturdy the better. Some aspects of screen accuracy should be left on the screen...just my 2 cents.

Placing the stitching where they did on the Raiders hat serves no purpose at all. Even the purpose they where intended they don't serve.

Thanks Bink & John! That's what I figured. Think I might opt for the normal, lower tack downs then on my SoC. But that's a few months down the road and for the Penman page. Wearin' my Henry every day and it just gets better and better :D

Few noob hat questions for you.

How much shrinkage can you hope to get out of a Henry?
I measured my head at just under 58.5, a size 59 Henry measures at 59.3, how many mm is it possible to lose?
If a new hat fits perfectly would it tighten due to shrinkage?

Cheers ZOLTAR

Reet?

You got your Henry yet? I was just wondering cos my Henry is a 59 and runs more like a 60. I've not seen any shrinkage yet and I've had it soaking from a downpour. I've still got foam pads in there. Mines a few months old now.

Most leather sweatbands shrink up about 1/8 inch (that's why I add an 1/8 of an inch). The Henry sweatband is a whole different animal. I'm not sure that it will.

My sweat has not shrunk even a little. If memory serves me right, Marc intentionally had them pre-shink these sweats at the factory so they didn't shrink or only did slightly over time. And my Henry has had some wear in the last year+.

Oh well. :( I do love my Henry and I wear it all the time, just would've liked it to fit without the pads. I guess trying to shrink it using the lampshade trick won't work either. All that said, it's the risk you take when buying a factory lid and part of the reason that customs are so much better.

Yep I got one, I didn't want to wait for a custom as this was the final piece to complete my first set of gear.
Under the leather sweatband there's a small darker brown band between it and the felt that looks like folded vinyl, I don't see how that can shrink at all.
Stefan got back to me and said it could shrink up to half a size so it's a bit confusing as to what's going to happen with it.

That's the reed tape. That what you sew to the felt body. The leather of the sweatband can shrink without the reed shrinking.

Can anyone help with this? How easy is it to sew the liner into a Henry?

I've got one where the liner is still glued in. I think that John said that now they are sewn in, so mine must have been from an old batch.

I've only had it a few months, but the lining is coming away from the felt because the glue is failing. :x I don't know if this has anything to do with the foam pads I have to use in the sweat.

I guess I need to sew the liner back in. Is this the type of task that takes years to grasp or is it failrly straight forward? - I'm a fairly practical person. Would I need a new liner first?

(Must say that I'm pretty peeved about this and the size running too big on what's supposed to be a quality production lid. :x)

Thanks,

Ian

When I sewed the liner into my Fed IV, I looked at my Henry and tried to do it in a similar way.
I made 5 stitches all around and never had a problem with it.
I don´t think the foam pads are the problem, every hat (with or without pads) I had with a glued in liner came loose after a while.

Thanks Trem,

Did you just go part way through the felt with the stitch? Did you use a special needle or thread?

Thanks,

I tried it but back then my sewing skills weren´t as good. I used a normal needle and a white thread. Just be careful not to stitch through the ribbon ;)

Check out the link above. It should help you.

It's way to much to expect a custom fit from any off the rack hat. Some people are just I'm-between sizes.

Does anyone have the Grey Henry? Thinking about getting one and wanted some opinions and pics if you have them. It looks like it would make an awesome Raiders Seaplane.

Yeah, but at least it's sorted now. Kind of stuck with mine, so I'll just have to keep the pads in. :x

Well, unless you distress it, don't expect it to start looking worn soon. These are really tough lids. I've had mine soaking wet and scrunched up into a ball and it still looks like new.

Just watch for the lining staining from some of the dye leaking out. It really shows up cos the lining is white.

The ribbon will ride up the crown, showing the sweat stitching. I guess you just have to keep wetting your finger and pushing it down again. I've read that this was done intentionally so that it copies the Streets of Cairo look. Other than putting extra stitches on the ribbon, I dunno what you'd do to rectify this if it bugged you that much.

I've also hit mine with some Nikwax to waterproof it.

You got yourself a hat brush and a decent place to hang it?

I think this baby will be living in a box. Seems a shame but if you saw my kids playing with the DP I gave them you'd hide it away too ](*,) .

Where's a good place to pick up a hat brush and what should I be looking for?

:D I've let my son savage my DP. I use it as a decoy whlist I'm handling my other lids.

I got my brush off ebay, but there's one here http://www.hatsandcaps.co.uk/Felt-Hat-Brush-P603100/. Important to get one for each colour hat you have so that the different colour fibers don't mix.

I also got a nice hat stand from ebay made from rubber wood. (Don't think I can post ebay links). Pretty cheap and good if you're gonna buy a few lids. I also keep my boy's coats on it.

You could get a single hat stand from the likes of John Penman. Nice way to display your Henry.

I'm assuming you got this off Stefan, so the box you'll be storing it in will be a normal box and not the dog's bollocks ones that John sells?

I recently got into a humorous argument with my 2-year-old son, who insists that my Henry is his hat. I kept correcting me when I told him it is mine. My wife says I just have to buy him his own hat.

I've let my son play with it, twist it, sit and jump on it, etc., but it still looks new. I doubt you will have anything to worry about.

Finally had a nice sunny day here in Oregon ('bout darn time!) so I decided to snap a few pics of my new grey Henry. The color is super accurate imho. It has hints of green with notes of red (we're starting to sound like wine snobs here when it comes to fedoras!). Anyway, hope you enjoy! If you have one let's see it on your noggin' too!

Very slick, Brian!!! You wear hats well :TOH: I'm gonna have to see if John has one in my size when I pick up my Rabbit Raiders. Do you feell tempted to break it in a little? I love the nuances some scrunching does for my brown Henry, but it seems to me the grey should have a crisper look like you have there....IMHO. A fine lid indeed!! :notworthy:

Just checking out the SOC bash Stefen put in my new Henry, should there be a noticable creases down the back end of the side dents? They look a bit harsh to me, how would I soften them up?

I've not taken any pics yet so I've roughly marked where I mean on a screencap.

From my experience the crease lines will soften up after a few days anyway. But if you want to do it now, just pop out the side dents and press the crease lines a bit flat with your fingers, that should soften them up enough.

Just got my Henry in the mail today! I was so excited opening the box up and pulling that beauty out of there. I tried to go for a LC bash. It was my first time bashing a fedora, so it can still use some work.

Anyway, I love this fedora! It's by far the best hat that I own. Next time though, I'm definitely going to go for a Penman custom.
