My latest effort

Here is the result of my latest build which I completed today. It is 8' long, made from kangaroo. I used some old shellac that has browned with age, so the whip is fairly dark even though it is natural tan.

I'm sure that I will be selling some in the near future, I'm not in a position to take orders, but I will sell them as I complete them. For now, I want to really focus on the 8' Indy and perfect my process for just that one style, then maybe I will move on to other lengths. It's amazing how much more work it is to do a 10 footer, at least for me.

I can understand the work that goes into this. I gave it a try ounce. Made three whips. Wasn't for me. I do have a understand and respect for anyone who can make whips and make them well. I'll leave all this hard work to guys like you.

I was only able to crack it for the first time today. It is plaited super, super tight, maybe too tight actually. But it cracks like thunder, I was throwing lazy underhand flicks that were really loud. It worked out pretty well I think, but I do wonder if the plaiting is too tight. How tight is too tight??

Don't worry about it. Never too tight is a brand new whip. It seems you've done an excellent work

Yep, never too tight with kangaroo. I wondered about the last 1/3 of the whip not being heavy enough. But if you are producing thunderous cracks with a lazy underhand, then you nailed it. Good job!

I actually agree about the taper at the end, I think it's a bit too light and I plan to beef up the next one a bit. Nevertheless, the performance seems very good.

Anyway, perhaps you've already thought of this, but you should try to keep a record on what this whip is good for, and compare it to your next whips. That way you can determine if it works better for multiple cracking, target cutting, etc.

Thanks for the advice, I do in fact keep a detailed journal for this reason. It's impossible to remember all the little details of a build if you don't write them down, and it's been very useful. I'm still refining my measurements but I am getting really close to what I am looking for. Hopefully the next one... I think I will be saying that a lot.
