Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
No doubt this would have been discussed in the past, but a few special requests that I've had from people over the last few weeks have made me aware of just how varied people's idea of what the perfect Raiders hat is.
I'm wondering what your current favourites are in terms of your ideal Raiders look. Obviously the SoC is a big one, but along with that, what other idealised moments of Raiders hat coolness do you like?
One moment I like which isn't really replicated in the movie is this:

Im pretty sure that that is the WoS hat in the picture.

I really like the plane fight scene hat, but that might be the same one as WoS. Dunno, looks a little different to me, but I like it.

Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
oh I love the look of Indy when he's haning off the front of the truck, ( )
Fedora did my orriginal AB in this and while it was close, he also had the rear of the fedora curled up like there was a gust of wind pushing it up , hahaha, well a little steam and some reblocks and all is well. (now if my napatha would come in so I can try cleaning it) sorry back to topic. I just love the look of how boxie it looks while at the same time so disheveled.

ps: I was trying to find a pic to load up but for some reason they won't work, dang. But I think every one knows the scene.

I always loved this hat, and while it may be the WOS, the pics make it look a little different to me. It has some weird stuff going on with the sides, and the brim. Which I LIKE! FedoraOne moment I like which isn't really replicated in the movie is this:

I'm not a big fan of the SoC, myself. Yes, it's iconic and works perfectly within the film. But it looks... well... like it's melting. But in that heat, I shouldn't be surprised!
My favorite hats are the Well of Souls (specifically, the shot where he's nose-to-nose with the cobra) and the Idol Grab.

Raven Bar...
Has some mystery and intrigue about it.
Maybe because of the lighting in that scene, or something...

Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
The "Idol Grab" hat. I really like that tight pinch and the effect the turn has on the brim.
Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
Yeah, and that turned hat has unturned itself in that one shot. I have at times kidded a few customers when they wanted that hat. I would say, well, you gotta wear it with the front crease to the side for it to look like the cobra hat! Because, if you turn it back to where it is supposed to be, the hat changes nuances. The turn does more than to warp the brim. FedoraMy favorite hats are the Well of Souls (specifically, the shot where he's nose-to-nose with the cobra) and the Idol Grab.

Idol grab and SoC. Probably not too far from the norm.

Oh sure you know the scene Indiana Jeff, Indy's grabbing the hood ornamate, then the grille bars and the he does the stunt where he slides under the truck, it's the chase sequence where he's going after the ark after the Nazi's (hate those guys) have taken it, wish I could find a pic to post but I can't seem to find one, anyone else have this shot.

No doubt the Idol Grab hat is my favorite from Raiders! My favorite hat from the entire series has to be the Venice pier hat.
Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
I'd have to go idol grab for the hat. In fact, the idol grab contains my favorite look for the jacket as well.

Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
I love the SoC hat, of course. My favorite hat in the series, though is the one after Indy believes he has killed Marion. I think Fox dubbed this the "drinkin' with a monkey" hat. This is my favorite. After that one, the SoC hat and then probably the inside temple hat, before the idol grab. IMO, that one is different from the idol grab hat.

Yeah, you know I would have thought I'd have more orders for the Idol Grab, to be honest. Well of Souls and the Truck Chase seem to be the most popular that people have ordered, but I'm itching to make another Idol Grab so I can do another set of screen grab overlays with something other than a test hat.

my favorite the idol grab
Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
all in all, the Raiders hat is my favourite.
But to be more specific, I'd choose the idol grab.
btw, regarding the first picture, where is that scene from?

Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
throw me in with the rest of the raven bars. I love that hat. Then the idol grab.
Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
I love Cairo over any other style!
Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
I'm not a Hat expert by any means.
I love pretty much every Hat in Raiders. Cobra encounter, Idol grab, Streets of Cairo. All have so much character.
One thing I have not seen mentioned is something that always stood out to me when trying to bash my own Hat about ten years ago.
On the Raiders Making of VHS that accompanied the original Boxed Trilogy release back in the early 90's, there was an extensive Behind the Scenes Documentary which is sadly missing from the DVD.
In the Raven Bar scene, while waiting between takes and camera set ups, Harrison is shown clearly rolling his hands around the brim of his Hat reshaping it.
Just a thought on possibly why the hat appears subtley different between scenes.

As Steve will attest to, I am a Streets of Cairo guy............. there is just something about the well worn look of that hat that appeals to me over any of the other 'looks' of the hat.............. when that hat is on Harrison's head, IT IS ON!!!!!!

Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
Here's my favorite looking hat style, I just love the blockyness of it. So ya never no Mr. Yojimbo Jones, once I've read some reviews and you can do this, we'll see. Of course the rear of the hat won't be pushed back from the wind, more like the SOC look on the rear would be better.

My favorite is probably the outside temple scene from the beginning of RAIDERS, because that's the one that immediately comes to mind when I think of the hat; but most of the other looks are fine, too.

Yep, You would have heard right! Worst thing is you'll have a warm day, then freeze at night, but then it'll reverse. Very weird.

Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
you mean to say he changes hat style!? and there's me thinking the hero's hat never comes off.
Seriously, apart from how dirty it is, even to my experienced artist's eye it changes marginally. I think we make too much of the differences from scene to scene sometimes. But if pushed, I'd say the idol grab because it's the first clear look we get at the hat that became an icon.
Or is that the hat that became an attribute OF an icon - if we stick with the artists' vocabulary? - Icons of St Peter always have crossed key, St Catherine - a cart wheel, St Indiana - the fedora and bullwhip!
Also, it's interesting that most people say Streets of Cairo is THE look, then they worry about their own Fedora having a slight taper.

And as far as another 24hrs, no problemo, cause if you can do what I thinl your claiming you can do I just might have to put some pennys together, kinda wished I'd jumped at your orriginal offer.

Ok Croft, here you go!
Bear in mind I didn't want to do more than nudge the bash of this hat a little as it's about to go out to a customer. You also have to bear in mind ther'd be a LOT of wind goin' on! If you specifically wanted to replicate the front-of-truck look, I could do it more accurately.

Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
Very nice, and if we went foward we'd have plenty to discuss, your right in the above pic theres lots of wind, but it's the over all look of the as your looking at it. When you look at this scene in the movie the back side is all pushed up. Not what I'd wnat, instead a blend. Truck scene in front and SOC look to the rear.
But over all it's nice to see some of your work, someones going to be pleased.
Croft.

Re: Favourite Raiders Hat Styles?
Thanks, yeah, the thing I found interesting is how little the hat changes from the Flying Wing to the Truck Chase, which is good because the guy buying this hat wanted a fusion of the 2 if possible. But in looking at a few of the shots, yours on the front of the truck included, you could see at some stage in there the hat definitely changed a little towards the start of the SoC. Subtle changes from the truck interior to the exterior stuff like on the grill and behind it getting dragged. To the point that it couldn't be prefectly replicated without really pinching those dents in much tighter. Another thing is the lighting, which can also cause some major illusions. I'd rather not post more pictures until the dude gets his hat though - he really should get to see it first!
cheers, Kurt.
