Early '80s Neil Cooper jacket

Post by RCSignals »

Posted at the request of Sgt Hack
You can pass this e-mail around and even post on COW.. This is a Neil Cooper
Pattern made back in the early 80s.. But keep in mind Neil Cooper and His
employees made the Indy Jacket out of any and all leather.. You never know
how a jacket will look until you make the jacket!
As for myself I don't care for the side strap going into the side pockets!
..............

Regards,
Sgt. Hack
also
The Pockets are 7in and the collar is a little larger than the Cooper Pattern we now use… Way back when we did them with the strap inside the pocket and some with out.. I never did care for the strap going into the pocket.

Regards,

Sarge

I am confused... Yes this looks pretty much like the current wings jacket... But if cooper made the raiders and temple of doom jacket why is this one not like those featured in the films? Specifically the collar stand becoming the top of the storm flap, the short back panel, etc????

I just don't get it! ](*,)

Looks like a blue label. I believe the blue label had the original specs.

That's my understanding as well-Blue Label Wings were made from these same specs and patterns.

Do we ever see this Blue Label pattern jacket on screen? I know there is a bunch of info on this, but could someone just distill this down?

I want one of the upcoming USW striated leather jackets, but I'm not sure how I feel about this pattern. The straps going into the pockets look strange to me.

The BW "still" photo and, perhaps, the jacket used for the BW dock scene seems to have similar features but the maker of those jackets hasn't been positively determined to my understanding.

Yojimbo Jones has also postulated that the BW jacket might have appeared in certain scenes of the temple and truck chase.

So this is the low-yoke (and possibly POS) jacket, correct?

It appears as though in the jacket production process, the older pattern consisted of the wider yoke, straps almost inside the hand warmers and pockets positioned further away from the storm flap.

At some point, they modified the pattern in each of these areas to make a more narrow yoke, straps away from the handwarmers and possibly the pockets closer to the storm flap. This is the config. that we know today.

As the G&B Expedition jacket is a copy of one of the Raiders stuntmen's jackets, apparently one of the jackets from the 3rd LC order, the newer config. had been incorporated into these jackets as well.

I'll be honest, I thought the "dockside still" jacket was the PoS jacket for quite a while. But I realized that we were never told that. The features between the still photo jacket and what has become known as the "Cooper" patterns is very interesting to me. I wonder if the "dockside still" jacket isn't one of the two Cooper made for the production and the patterns were changed as Texan Scott noted.

This is all my own conjecture, of course.

It's difficult to tell who made the dock-side jacket based on the still. Speculation has suggested that it could have been the infamous 'AD' jacket, a Cooper or a LC...?

Specualtion here...NC and SS stayed up all night and produced one, possibly two jackets the night before filming began. The first scenes filmed in the movie were the submarine, Bantu Wind and dock scenes. Yet the sea was too choppy, so they had to postpone filming of the sub and BW scenes for two days. That puts us at Wednesday, June 25, 1980 for the first day of filming, and for filming the sub and BW scenes. Thursday, they filmed all day. Friday, they filmed the dock, night scenes and finished at 10:45 pm.

This concluded the first week of filming.

So there were two days lag time, Mon-Tues. of the first two days of filming because of the rough sea. Who knows what happened in those two days....

With the sea scenes wrapped, the production then moved to Elstree and began to film the scenes inside the studio on Monday, June 30.

You're exactly right that we don't know what all was going on during that first week as far as jackets go.

It's my understanding that they used the first two days of filming, however, for the submarine pen scenes.

I'm not an expert on the jacket, but didn't the film jackets have sliders on the straps? The picture of the back of this Cooper jacket has D-rings.

Then again, I may just be confused, or perhaps the film jackets weren't consistent.

yes, some of the raiders jacket had D-rings and they kept slipping all the time so they replced them with triglides and rectangular sliders.

Not really keen on that jacket's looks. There are so many versions of the Cooper design, many with small pockets. If this is the original design, In wonder how different was it to the movie version? Lets face it, commercial products based on film props/costumes often vary in look.

The current version from G+B is fan altered. The jacket it is based on from what has been posted of _'s review, may have been closer to the pattern we see above.

So is this a new jacket made from the 80s PATTERN? That is what my understanding is, seeing that USW didn't exist in the 80s. :-k

Mabe it was re-labled, a common enought phenomenon in retail. It does look so much like an early Wested, don't it. Does it predate the first Westeds? If it does could it be that Peter had one and used it for his pattern?

As an answer to some questions about why Wings produces the jackets as they do, using the name they do....

I know this has been covered before, but...straight from the horses mouth:
It should be noted that US Wings is not a licensed source for Indiana Jones
tm and that is why we say in writing Indy-Style But we do use the Neil
Copper Patterns and have ever since US Wings has been making and selling
Jackets for Neil Cooper.. Neil Cooper has also made Jackets for US Wings
Inc. and placed the US Wings Label in them with permission of both parties
in writing i.e. contract. Regards, Sgt. Hack
Does that help?
