Hat Maintenance in SF Bay Area

Post by JME2 »

My Fed IV has served me well over the last year, but we're getting to the point where I'm considering a re blocking as well as other, more professional tune-ups to the ol' girl. Does anyone know of any good hat blockers in Northern California?

Getting blown off my head and into oncoming traffic and then nearly run over multiple times would be sure to age any hat.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock on just how long you have had your hat and it needs a re-block. remember it's the milage not the years.

I have hats for years and never needed a re-block and then had a hat for a year and needed one badly. It's how often and in how you wear your hat.

And how you treat your hat. A hat should be brushed after wearing and stored upside down. A hat worn in the rain will eventually turn into a wet rag. So roughing it should be taken into consideration, especially when the hat in question costs four or more hundred dollars.

I don't know of any hat renovators in the Bay Area. Jackson Hole Hat company will clean and reblock a hat. They used to charge about 75 dollars. But google it - and be prepared to ship. Good luck.

JH Hat co. is a good one, but they may or may not have the block required to re-do a fedora, as they specialize in Western hats. So, be sure to check your sources and make sure they can match what you have....or be open to have something ELSE come back 'shape wise'.

Jackson Hole does offer a fedora. They also offer an "Indiana Jones" style. Looks a bit off, but as they're a custom hatter, they'll probably accept the specific dimensions.

I've seen their fedora, and the one I saw was a teardrop crown.
