My favorite Schwarzenegger quote:

"Blow off some steam, Bennett!"

I'll see if I can get some photos taken this weekend. I think folks would like to see how theyre Penmans will hold up. I got my Raiders hat in July or August of '08 so its coming up to the two year mark and it is holding up like a beast. The felt has softened up to floppy mass and has all the character you'd expect of a rabbit hat. The color is mellowing out nicely too. It is considerably lighter in color than when I first received it and much more Raiders accurate. And it will be nice for everyone to see some of John's custom work again, as you don't see it much on these boards.

It would be nice if we could strike a happy medium with some lighter weight felt, maybe not featherweight, but do they make something in-between?

At least you looked into it, John. What did you not like about the felt? I vant to kno!

I have an old "wafer thin" Knox Vagabond which is the perfect summer felt for me, though the hat itself has been through the ringer. I've also handled a certain hat in Michaelson's collection which has the kind of felt I'm looking for. ;) I realize it's a pain to work with, and finding a good quality felt is a challenge, but I'd be all over it like white on rice. A happy medium would interest me, as well.

If my felter would do light weight felt then I would make it an offering. I just don't like the stuff Art and gram is using.

That's what you get when you give the keys to the dog! (think Pirates...)

Seriously, I think John should make that hat in a 24 1/4".... I think it would look much better on you! And hey, if for some reason it doesn't... I got an idea for it!

P.S.- Penman #4 should be getting made soon! \:D/

Well, I've only purchased three. My last one was a gift and the first one I got for $200, a deal John extended to his first ten customers. Back then he only offered beaver. If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be my charcoal one with the vintage iron ribbon Steve gave me for it. Matched up perfectly.

I don't know anything about how that hat was made. It was a gift. I love the bow too. It has such a beautiful "V" on there. It goes really well with blacks and greys but not much else, because of the bow. Its blessing is its curse, so to speak. That one is John's steel grey color. Very classy looking hat.

Yeah, right now Dave is beating me.... for now...

My first Penman was a Grey Raiders Seaplane. 2nd a brown Last Crusade. And the 3rd was a black "Penman."

Here's my Penman trio:

Is John's waiting time still 5 months? Just thinking about when my LC will be on my noggin. :P

Jnicktem; You were right: I should've ordered both the Raiders and the LC at the same time, then I'd only have a couple of months to wait for both. ](*,)

Jnictem I love that grey seaplane, it looks phenomenal. And that's a nice collection, good variation of color to work with in a wardrobe. As soon as i can i've got to get on John's list. I want one of those moss hats though, i really love the one on his website that is along side of his pup. I wish i had better pics of it on a noggin'.

I think at the same time i'm going to send him my Henry and have him reblock/resize it into a Raiders, and just ship them off to me at the same time.

This hat thing is killing me :Dietrich: :Dietrich:

Michaelson wrote:Well, without going into details, I FINALLY got my hands on a Penman of my own! \:D/

Well, right off the bat, even though I know John is using the same felt as Fedora, the felt actually feels softer to the touch, and seems to be more supple, if that's possible. It must be from one of those tight felted batches that Fedora talks about. :-k

The fit is great. It will be even better when I get my hair cut (I've kind of gone to seed lately. (grins), but even so, it's as comfortable a hat as I've put on my head!

The sewing is immaculate. Just perfect. I especially like the liner. The sweat is also soft. I'm assuming he treated this with rain treatment, as I've read that's a standard practice for his hats before they go out the door.

The ribbon work looks great. I can't say a thing bad about it. Nothing.

My wife REALLY likes it, as it reminds her of the hat her grandfather used to wear. It will have it's first 'outing' tomorrow as my go to work hat. Should look nice worn in the Plymouth. :TOH:

I REALLY like that brochure he included too. Anything you want to know about a Penman hat, or anything else regarding hat care for that matter, seems to be included. I haven't read it all yet, but that's my next thing I plan to do after writing this review.

So, what else can I say? I love this hat. It's like nothing I've had since the 1970's, and that one was a hand me down from my Dad from the 1940's. It's not a Mallory or Marathon (my Dad's hats) but it's darn close! It's a style that I haven't worn in literally decades, and it's a nice change.

WELL done! An example from a true master craftsman. I can see why Dave raves so much about his Penmans. ;)

HIGH Regards, John!!

Michaelson
:M:
Mark, any chance of seeing a photo of the hat? Maybe even one of you wearing it? We all know how long it took to get some pics of your sahara AB up. Maybe you can do it a little sooner this time?

Hulk, yeah, that was by the exit of the IJEPSS, but not by the cafeteria. That is by the exit that leads you right into the Indy giftshop (not the little stand, but the proper store), right next to 50s Prime Time.

I know, Fox. I hate it. But this trip is the reason why we couldn't meet up with you guys. Just couldn't afford both trips. Did you guys have a good time? We love Disneyworld and the Disney Cruise Line. We had a great time on this trip, except for one little hiccup that was out of our control. We make sure to hit up the IJESS everytime we go. And for some reason I always take my Penman. I guess it's my go to hat. Any time I go camping or know I will be seeing some action, this is the hat I take with me. She and I have become old friends. Not many hats could have taken the abuse I've put this one through.

Yep, had a WONDERFUL time... there's an anecdote or two about it in a new Thread I started in the Scrapbook Section... check it out when you have a moment.
:)

It's funny how you mention that you always take your Penman, because I wore mine to the IJ Show as well (and actually mentioned in the Thread I mentioned that I was pretty sure mine wasn't the first Penman Hat to visit it)... and you're right, of course, a Bulldog Tough Hat is the BEST kinda hat to take with you on a vacation ('cuz you NEVER know what's gonna happen on one of THOSE!)
;)

Until next time, we do agree that we're both holding Rain Cheques on getting together some OTHER time... RIGHT, my friend?

Of course! It still pains me we couldn't go. I turned to Steph a few weeks ago and said "You know, we should be at Disney this weekend with Fox and his family!" We will be at the QM summit if you guys are planning on making it out to Cali. Othern' that, it has been a while since I've visited the Great White North. And I do love Nova Scotia!

Wowwie! Look at that bow work! John, you have truly out done yourself. I don't think I've ever seen a bow this beautiful. Holy smokes! I let out a great big audible "Whoa!" when I saw that hat. Speedrcrx, that is the most beautiful bow I have ever seen. A truly beautiful hat. And it suits you very well. Perfect style for you. Its good to see an Eddie on COW. Up until now the only one I had seen was the one you gave to your nephew, John. It looks fantastic. Congrats Speedrcrx. And John, I better get some bow work like this on the one I have on order!
