I've recently started wearing a fedora regularly, especially now that I have my Fed.

I always take my hat off when I'm indoors. My gf says I'm an old man but she likes the fact that I adhere to older standards.

I've noticed that I'm fine when I go somewhere and eat by myself, or with my gf. I have a chair usually to place my hat on.

But when my gf and I go out with other couples I have no where to put my lid.....I try to balance it on my knee but that only works if I'm entirely concious of it the whole time. I can't put it on the table as there's usually never any room.

Sadly, but understandably, there is no hat racks or hat/coat check in anymore.....any suggestions?

I bet you've had military in your background. I'm the same way - just can't sit to a table or enter a building with a hat on. But then there's the other factor as already posted of changing times, more more and more bufoons sitting to a table with their filthy ball caps on, so I guess it would depend on the kind of joint you're in. Anything resembling a bar, I'd leave it on with an attitude of 'Somebody knock it off and make my day'. Maybe even a Red Lobster, Applebee's or most any other chain restaurant, but beyond that into the nice joints I'd go in bareheaded.
