Replacing The Wested Raiders
I've never liked the fit of my Wested Raiders, and even less after losing about 20 lbs. So, I just ordered one of the new US Wings $199 specials. They say shipping will be around June 1 so I'll post when I get it.

Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
'5150', is police code for crazy one on the loose.
I was riffing off the whole numbers thing, as if rejecting a Wested was going "rogue", number puns, etc.
Great job on the weight loss!
Just kidding, guys.
I'll try not to startle anyone...

Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
I'm getting another jacket to wear, I hope. Depends on the cut of the USW. That doesn't necessarily mean getting rid of the Wested Raiders. After all, it is a very fine garment and it's just beginning to show some character - but the lining is going to need some work. The jacket has always been a horror. Going by my measurements and Wested's site, I required a 44. When it arrived, it was huge. I sent it back, and I think what they did was try to tailor it based on the measurements I sent them instead of just pulling a 42 and sending it. Folks, you cannot do tailoring by mail order or the Internet. When it got back, it was better, but the first thing I noticed was it seemed to be short, particularly in front. Then there is the width - the thing is wide across the arm pits. When I raise an arm, the jacket arm pit is like halfway down my arm. The back vents stick out because I have to take up the side adjustments all the way. The collar is huge. And of course, being a Wested, the zipper is on the wrong side. I guess if I can wear the USW I'll try to find some misshapen ogre that can use the Wested.
Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
Now, now, you'll get something started with that one! As you probably already know, the movie jackets had an European zipper configuration so Wested's zippers are on the correct side for an Indy jacket. And of course, being a Wested, the zipper is on the wrong side.
From what you describe about the jacket flaring, it sounds like you might be experiencing some of the infamous Wested "flying squirrel" effect that some Westeds have. Tough to say without a pic though.
It can be done. Tony Nowak was a master at it. I've gotten a good fitting jacket from Todd Coyle this way and, from every thing I hear, Magnoli does a terrific job as well.Folks, you cannot do tailoring by mail order or the Internet

Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
Sounds like the Rotla pattern might have been a better fit, slimmer torso, sleeves and gussets, but that's 20/20 now.
Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
Hmmm. I see your point - I dug out my certificate, and while its called a 'Raiders', it says it was cut from the patterns of the 'Temple of Doom' jacket. I can't remember when I got it - I think I've had it since about '98.Texan Scott wrote:Sounds like the Rotla pattern might have been a better fit, slimmer torso, sleeves and gussets, but that's 20/20 now.

Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
I don't think they offered a ToD jacket back in '98. When you ordered back then, you received a standard issue, English brown lambskin. There wasn't much to the specs back then, you just provided jacket size, sleeves and overall length. The ToD has been a recent offering, last year, wasn't it?
Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
Not possible. I've had the jacket quite a while and the certificate says what it says. He was offering at least two jackets at the time - the ROLA and the ToD, apparently also known as 'The Raiders'. It was supposed to be longer (joke) and it had a wider collar (no joke).Texan Scott wrote:I don't think they offered a ToD jacket back in '98. Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
I recall they had a ToD offering back when I ordered mine in 2006, and called it that. It vanished not long after, amid some hash about if Peter was aloud to actually market something called a Temple of Doom jacket, I think. Then it showed up again, in it's current "limited" form.
Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
I've heard that Wested used to offerr a ToD that was basically a Raiders jacket that was an inch longer. Could this be what you have?191145 wrote:Not possible. Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
Well, I checked some records and I found that I got it in Jan., 2005. Seems like a long five years. $310 with shipping and I had to turn around and pay him another $37.50 to send it back after I returned it. Now if I keep it I'll have to put a $150 liner in it. Cotton this time IF I do it.
ETA: Yes, Crismans, that's it, although it really didn't turn out that way.

Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
Wested had a ToD available in 2000-2001 when I first started looking.
In those days Peter still stated that his jackets were on screen in ToD and that the only difference between a Raiders and a ToD was the length. One inch longer for ToD. I asked him about this at the time. He said there was no real difference between the jackets and he had the actual patterns for both in the office.
We now know that was wrong.
It's only recently that Peter has made a proper ToD based on a Coopers original.

Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
Peter has offered a ToD style forever. When I bought my Raider's jacket from Wested back in 97 the choices were Raider's, ToD (1 inch longer in body), or LC with wide collar and press studs, in dark brown lamb, cotton or satin lining.

Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
Then he committed mail fraud when he misrepresented this jacket. Too bad he doesn't live in the USA! I for one will have no further business with him. On the other hand, I'm keeping it for a while since certain items of questionable lineage tend to take on a collectibility of their own.

Re: Replacing The Wested Raiders
It does sort of sum it up, though. Why can't we get a ToD a jacket that meets the Raiders specs?
