Just make sure to really condition that fall (and the rest of it) before giving the new one a workout. ;)
The new whip is on it's way. :D Since I want to crack it he's sending me an eight footer with some Pecards to condition it. I had no idea that the ten footer wasn't made for cracking! Considering that it's pretty cool that Todd is replacing it anyway. But really, why would anyone ever make a whip that isn't supposed to be cracked? :-k Oh well, sounds like I'm gonna be happy, and Todd's is still an awesome source :TOH:

No, we're not out of stock. It's a website problem. I'll have it fixed in a minute. Until I can re-write the copy:

8' - cracking good whip
10' - more "show" less "go"

Oh, and I'm changing the price on the 10' to $99.95

Hey indyclone

congrats on your whip purchase and thanks for posting video. Just curious, why does it sound like that? It sounds "different" than most whips i've seen and heard. Kind of a dry "blocky" sound...
Maybe it's just me...

Anyway, thanks again for posting video and have fun cracking!!! :whip: :whip:

I second this care advice--

I know I said I'd order one as soon as they came back in-- I wasn't expecting that to be Friday. Ha. Spent way too much treating a young lady out on the town that night... Luckily paycheck will be in on Wednesday. I'll order then.

When I first got mine, it was very dry. Simply flexing the whip made a dry creaking noise.

Before you start cracking it, give it a good heavy application of leather conditioner (pecards is my all time favorite) and let it soak in overnight. You may have to give it more than one application as you want the conditioner to reach the core.

Don't worry about the knots or the handle too much, just make sure the thong and fall are good and conditioned before you try to crack it.

Once you begin using it, make sure to keep the fall good and lubed as it takes the most abuse.

To break in your new whip, simply crack, smile, repeat.
The more you use it, the better it will get.

Hey Indyclone!
Congrats on the the whip, and great video! I soaked my fall in neatsfoot oil at the beginning and have given it subsequent slatherings of Pecard and it has worked well for me. I also tied on a new cracker, basically because the original one flew off, never to be found. I had some spares from other whips and they work better than the one provided with the whip. A cleaner crack, IMHO.

Cheers!

Arr, bummer.. :? Just got my 10' today, ordered it on march 31st,
if I'd known it would decrease in price two days later I would have waited.. well..

Great looking whip though, nice colour and hefty feel.. :TOH: just needs some pecards and sunlight and it'll look even better..

I'd call Todd. He's a stand-up guy and might adjust the price for you. It's a great whip for the price regardless.

Just got my whip.

Would you suggest soaking just the fall in Neatsfoot or the whole whip?

Also, should I remove the cracker before conditioning the fall or doesn't it matter?

Soak only the fall in neatsfoot, the cracker can be left on. I did put a little neatfoots on the thong ( very sparingly) so it would penetrate into the whip. Go over this thread from the beginning to see what others (and myself) have done and then choose what you want to do!
Hope this helps!

If you look a few posts back (April 2), Todd said this here about two weeks ago. At his recommendation I would go with the 8 footer which is more suitable for cracking. The 10 footer is more for show.

I bought a really small bottle of Neatsfoot but it's gonna be another week or so before it gets here. My dad just pulled out an old orange bottle of Louisville Slugger Glove Softener that he thinks may be Neatsfoot. It doesn't say Neatsfoot anywhere on it though. Should I use this stuff or just wait the week? Anyone have any experience with it and know what it is? A quick google search revealed nothing.

Rob,

Is that the color of your whip right out of the box? I like it!
It looks more like a saddle tan than the light natural tan of the 8" whip I received.

Also, what is the core made of? Is it all leather or is it syntetic (rubber?) like the older ones?

Ditto on that, just look at the pics in our posts. This whip is indeed darker, and the heel knot shape is different. The fall also looks like latigo. The fall on mine is white, as I believe are those of the other whips we´ve seen pictured here. Did you get this whip on Ebay? It looks like its from Todds previous batch. Looks great though!

Cheers!

This whip does not look like any of the whips pictured in this thread, or on Todd´s site. It looks like the ones he used to sell. Still a fine looking whip, but they do not resemble the new more SA batch, in 8 and 10 foot length, pictured on his website. The leather is obvioulsy conditioned and the heel knot shape is different. Perhaps Todd could enlighten us more. BTW my whip, the originator of this thread, is still going strong!

I've been conditioning the whip. It looks and feels a lot better. I took it out to crack for the first time earlier.

...I've paid my penance for the day. Too much self-flagellation for one day. :[

Got a few cracks out of it anyway. Then my dad took my jacket and my whip and gave it a try and he was doing the Cattleman's consistently by the third try. #-o

Ah well-- I'll try and head back out later and play with it some more.

Just as I got the Cattleman's down with relative consistency, I lost my cracker. Third time today, actually. But this time it ripped off the end of the fall. I have no clue where it went-- I was lucky enough to find it the other two times. Oh well...

Guess I'll be buying some nylon thread. What sort should I get? Planning to hit the sporting goods store tomorrow. Or might I have better luck at a fabric store?

Well Hi guys,

I've been reading this thread with much interest as I purchased one of Todd’s 10 footers a month or so ago for my missus party and as soon as it arrived I loved the feel of the whip in my hand :D that I became addicted to cracking :whip: . It looks just like ROB98374's one. I had mastered the whole feel of waving 10' about but got so into it that the whip snapped at the end of the handle. #-o :x :-({|= Much to my despair I thought that there was a fault with it... Until I spoke to Todd’s and was informed that the 10' was only for show.... Couldn't understand that but Todd’s team were very accommodating and are supplying me with an 8 footer to carry on my cracking addiction. They mentioned that I could use a spleen tyre repair kit to address the issue with the 10'...... 8)

I have managed to wrap some .6mm ali around the handle and just over the knot so it stays rigid to carry on cracking. It just feels like it has a 12" handle instead now and I can still crack it.. :) So to all those out there with 10 footers heed my experience. Here are a couple of pics to show the before and after with it......

Before..... Ouch!!!

ImageImage

After.....GULP!!

Image

Today though, at around half 7 this morning I had the utmost amount of joy as today I received in the post a new 8 footer..... with Pecards. :notworthy:

Image

Now it’s time to get it conditioned and get back out there to master the rest of cracks... :D

Thank you very much to the team at Todd’s. I'll be back soon to order more for sure.

Peace out guys. ;)

Any advice on how to condition /customize that bad boy can be found in this thread, as I'm sure you know. Now get out there and crack that whip!

I believe it was a rubber core... I just couldn't help myself with giving it a crack... :whip: i just got carried away and thought that I was Indy himself.
kwad wrote:OUCH!! I guess that's why Todd always discouraged people from cracking the rubber cored "prop" whips.....
I guess so. But it was mentioned on here that you could give it a crack, just not like properly cracking the 8'...

Even though I now have my 8' and have given it 3 coats of Pecards I'm a bit scared to crack it incase the same thing happens... Its just sitting there with my hat looking at me.

I'll go out soon and give it a go....promise... :P

In my mind this reinforces the idea there is NO replacement for a proper whip. There is a reason makers have been doing it 'right' for all this time. I look forward to more on Todd's new whip.
