My Absence

Post by RonC »

To All: My "real-life" career is taking me away from the Forum for a few months. I will be leaving shortly after Christmas for 6 weeks in Cameroon, Africa, followed by an additional journey to Northern Colombia in South America. I will be basically incommunicado, as far as the internet goes, while I am gone. I look forward to returning to the Forum upon my return.

Sounds like a wonderful experience. Have a great time! Oh yeah, don't drink or eat ANYTHING while in Africa, or you're bound to get some horrible, evil parasitic disease like cholera, Guinea worm, bilharzia, hepatitis A or the old standby, diarrhea. And of course there's the ones transmitted by insects, such as Dengue fever, filariasis, Leishmaniasis, malaria, onchocerciasis, Rift Valley fever, trypanosomiasis, or yellow fever.

Oh, and don't touch anyone either, or you might get hepatitis (A or B), or maybe HIV. Oh, and I hear Ebola is still occasionally breaking out, although not near where you'll be.

Have fun! ;)

Actually I spent quite a bit of time in Africa about two years ago and the food at most resteraunts gave none of us any problems. Bottled drinks such as bottled water, soda, beer and alcohol are okay but definitely stay away from the non-bottled water. Other than that have fun!

Ron:
When being in Colombia, take care, you know there's a lot of drug (cocaine) in Colombia, and there's also the guerrilla.

Someone I knew was kidnapped and murdered in South America. He wasn't a "foolish tourist" either, he lived there for a number of years.

Thanks to all for the good wishes! I am an "old" Africa Hand....worked there fror a number of years in "garden spots" like the Congo and Angola...well aware fo the dangers from food, mosquitos and what-not. Also spent a couple of years working in Eastern Colombia....well aware of the threat there (in fact, I still have a price on my head...guess not everyone there liked me! :D )
