Alden alternates?

Arrr... I haven't been around in a while, I was wondering if somebody could tell me where we stand on decent alternates to the Alden boots? (preferably with a moc-toe)

It's a little small (there's a bigger one somewhere), but here is the topic. The current favorite alternate is J. Crew. I'm sure others will chime in about them.

J Crew has the "Decker" and the "Rugged Boot"
Both are very good appearance-wise.

Fiddler,

Many of us managed to get in on the J Crew sale for the Decker at 75% off, and speaking for myself, I REALLY like the Decker! I have blisters the size of pancakes, but all new shoes have that drawback. They need some weathering, distressing, and maybe some darkening, but the style, moc-toe, and speed-lace set up make for a really good substitute, I like to think. For anyone who may be interested, the J Crew rugged boot is on sale. I'm getting a pair of these for Christmas. They are close to Aldens and I think they'll do better in the snow and ice.

Man that stinks. I just got my JCrew Rugged boots in Sept. and had to pay the $138 price. They are good boots, but I think I got mine 1/2 a size too large. I'm in the in-between 11 and 11.5 size, so for me getting shoes to fit is always a gamble. Did I say they're good boots?

That's good to know. We have a J Crew store here so I was able to try them on. I can't wait until I get to open them up and start wearing them around.

My only complaint with the JCrew Rugged boots is that the heel cup doesn't go up high enough on my heel, but it's not that big of a deal.

I went to the website...and they're out of them (at least in my size).

Pecard's boot oil makes the JCrew Rugged Boots look really nice. It gives them a nice dark brown hue instead of the lighter hue they come in.

I know the soles aren't right and no speed laces,but I love them just the same!

They look real good with the dark brown laces that come with them.

i saw those boots at american eagle. the problem with those is the issue of quality. they are pretty cheap, as are the jcrew. the chippewa boots that i referenced above are very high quality. they not only "look" the part, they can actually be taken on adventures.
