...but I thought I would post this anyway. :TOH:

I noticed something about the jacket a while ago whilst watching Raiders, which I thought I might share with you. It's probably nothing, but, what the heck. :anxious:

This picture is courtesy of Agent5's Flickr site. Forgive me, Jason, but I couldn't find this screenshot anywhere else. :CR:

For years, I noticed, what I believed to be, scratches on the jacket. I think it was KT Templar who found out that it was not scratches, but where the leather bubbles up, perhaps due to heat (?) Please correct me if I am wrong.

I also noticed the 'markings' here in this picture also:

It is quite a dark picture, but you can make out the markings near the bottom of the picture. ;)

I have tried to find a screenshot of the actual Raven bar to see if you can see it there, also, but the pictures are quite dark (I found that the DVD transfer of Raiders is quite dark at times), so I am not sure if this picture was taken at the same time that the scenes in the Raven Bar were filmed.

I realise that this has probably been discussed before, but I thought I would post this anyway.

It is from the type of lamb. The effect is enhanced with the 'shrunken lamb' method in tanning

Yes, I believe that those were the sections connected to the animal's ribs. I just wish there was a way to replicate it.

Well, not connected to the ribs. It's called ribbiness because it follows in 'lines'

There is. The animals breed plays a big part. I talked to a couple of leather experts, one a professor and the other a geneticist and they both agreed that it was due to the leather being, at least a cross with, the Merino breed of sheep. They have wrinkly skin, known in the sheep farming as 'ribby character'. When buying pelts often you will see ribby or non ribby mentioned. The wrinkles do generally follow the animals ribs.

This can be pushed to exaggerate it but it can look a little over the top. Sort of camel's scroat :). The solution I'd prefer would be to have the right breed and just tan it as normal, almost to try and minimise the effect. That way you get some subtle ribby character plus generally lightly textured skin.

Note the references below to ribby texture and Merino:

ribbs or bubbles whatever. it looks darn good and it is my favorite part of the whole Raiders jacket along with the high yoke.

They have been discussed before, to be certain. But that first picture gives one of the best views of them I have seen.

Personally, it's something I don't care for, and would not want on any jacket of mine. But that's just me. Still, it's one more clue in the Great Jacket Mystery.

Yes it can be pushed to an extreme, however it typically has to be 'pushed' to a degree for the effect to remain after 'normal' tanning.

This has been discussed many times, including further discussions with the same experts you emailed. (posted elsewhere) as you are well aware.

Ya, there was a big thread about this a few months back and Tony said that he can do it, no problem.

RC has a Nowak (with a thread here somewhere) that recreates this effect very well.
