ramped sight for s&w

having a hard time to find a ramped sight to complete my 1917 s&w revolver. my local gunsmith can't find one and neither can i. i've looked on websights like gunbroker and googled it and everything. no luck. anyone out there able to help?

Since the sight was fabricated for the Bapty, that's likely the route you'll have to go. Indygear home has the dimensions under the handgun section.

EDIT: Mountaineer's link looks to be a viable source for a darn good close-enough.

Midway USA is a good source, as is S&S Firearms. You're more likely to find it at a site that sells gun parts. Also try Brownells.

I'd think custom making it would be the easiest way.

That link to the conversion work is just so you can see the work involved with making things right. Not just look right, but function correctly as well.

You'd be surprised at the horror shows I've seen in the gun and pawn shops here in Hillbilly Haven.

Older, very skilled gunsmiths would probably be able to custom build you the a front sight, but with today's technology and/or training you'd probably be better going with what they know; 100% SA or not.

Another option would be Smith and Wesson's in-house gunsmith shop. The company web page has instructions on getting your Smith worked on by their 'smiths. Maybe give that a shot. (For what it's worth, that's the option I'm going if I get a new "Classic" 1917. I just can't bring myself to cut a historic one down.)

thanks everyone for the input. i'll give those a shot( no pun intended) i've got some fabrication skills of my own, and though it sounds like fun and i've thought the process out in my head, i'm not sure if i want to make one myself or not. it would take some doing. i will check out the suggestions and again i do appreciate the input. i'll let you know how it turns out.

FYI, S&W's shop won't do any work on anything older than 1950 (obviously this doesn't apply to the "Classic" 1917s). I called them and asked about rebuilding the inside of an old revolver...they cited "liability reasons".

yeah, when i get some time, i might just fabricate one and take it to a gunsmith and have them apply it. my local gunsmith cut the barrel, which was like pulling teeth. he really didn't wanna do it. he said to do the sight that it would have to be silver soldered onto the barrel. i'm no gunsmith so i was wondering if that sounds about right.

Yes. But it isn't an easy nor quick job.
