Some big US Wings Indy jacket news

Post by crismans »

Sgt. Hack gave me the okay today to post this today, so here we go. I think a lot of you guys are going to be very happy with this news (I know that my Saturday certainly started looking up! ).

US Wings has a couple of new factories overseas and are going to start producing some of their Indy jackets there. Same jacket specs, same leather, same quality, same everything, but produced at a lower overhead and they're passing on their savings. So, in the next little bit, they are going to start offering a new line of Indy jackets (I believe under the US Wings 86 Line, but don't quote me on that point). These jackets will be offered in goat or their vintage cowhide for $195.95 (up to 3XL but no longs). It's going to be VERY hard to beat that combination of quality and price.

Next item: As more and more information has come to light, and DVD images have gotten more clear, we can see that the Raiders jacket had a lot of grain to it, featuring the famous striations that you've heard so much about. The interesting thing is that Wings used to offer a lambskin that had these striations on it. Here's a pic (the picture is small but can be saved and then zoomed to show the detail of the leather) Also, this is an old Wings jacket so take the 3 piece back panel (and arm panels) with a grain of salt. :

Image.

I asked Sgt. Hack a while back if he could still source this leather and he can. So, he's going to be offering a jacket in this "striated lamb". For the same $195.95, you can get a jacket in a leather that closely resembles what you see on screen. And, considering _'s recent revelations concerning Neil Cooper's involvement with the Raiders jacket, without trying to read too much into it, you have a leather that might contain quite a bit of provenance.

Last, but certainly not least to me: the Wings Temple of Doom jacket is back on the table! Here's the thread for those who may not know what I'm talking about:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=36733&hilit=temple+of+doom

The Sgt. has said that he will be making this jacket in Wing's antique lamb for the $195.95 price. I've held the prototype and it was an awesome jacket that really brought Wing's Indy jacket pattern in line with the Temple of Doom jacket. So, you will be able to get a jacket with many SA features, made by the original manufacturer for a terrific price!

So there are a LOT of great things that are going to be coming out of the Wing's Indy jacket front in the next few months!

Oh, and I also forgot to add that, in non-Indy jacket news, Wings is also coming out with a new line of varsity jackets as well. The ones that have the wool body and leather sleeves. I'm hoping they have these in black and gold so I can have a Steelers emblem sewn on. ;)

That is great news! Wings does make an awesome jacket. I wish though that they would make their pattern a little bit more SA (pocket flap shape, and the back panel extending out to the edge) but those are personal likes, but they still without a doubt make a terrific jacket and it sounds like it just got better!!!!

The back panel is addressed on the Temple jacket that's coming out from Wings so you might want to take a look at it.

I'm assuming that all of the new jackets will be made to the same Wings pattern. You'll just be able to get them for what, half off current pricing levels or thereabouts?

If you're talking about the Temple jacket, it was designed to be more slim fitting. It's all discussed in the link I posted above. :TOH:

like cris said. read the thread. I made the whole pattern and details for wings to use. sadly they only used parts of my pattern sheet. but its okay. Im just glad they used parts of it so it is more templeish. the collar is tweaked. the pockets. the extending backpanel. the jacket cut. the zipper. the sleeves ( I think) so, it IS changed. :D

it was a pain making the pattern...

Maybe since it was never put in production and there may not be the issues in getting changes made there were before, they can fix those final things, and the pleat detail too?

Well, all I can say is that after 14 years of being flamed and beaten over the head each and everytime I posted Wings information, the time has finally come where new information regarding new Wings jackets has been posted, and NOW everyone is excited by the news.

I never thought I'd see the day come.

I'm honestly hoping that when the final decision is made, not only calfskin gets considered, but a soft horsehide is offered. Now THAT would be the ULTIMATE 'to get' Indy jacket to me!!! :notworthy:

The irony isn't lost on me either.

Here's hoping they sell a lot of jackets! :M:

Regards! Michaelson

p.s. By the way, did I mention I think HORSE HIDE would be a good option? :CR:

'Nother few questions...Will the non-TOD jacket be available in the antique lamb as well? Or is that just a TOD jacket thing? Also, is the CS style cowhide Wings uses like Tony's dark cowhide or the light cowhide?

Thanks for all of the compliments, gentleman! :TOH:

But, with no false modesty, the thanks really go to Sgt. Hack. He's the one who has introduced the new pricing, of course, okayed the striated lamb, and brought the Temple jacket back up. I thought it was dead in the water until he emailed me the other day and said that he still had the prototype and was thinking of making that jacket. What did I think about it? Of course, I told him that I thought it was a terrific idea and he had okayed it by that afternoon. :notworthy:

As for the questions, I hate not being able to answer them but I honestly don't know anything more at the moment than what I have posted. For the moment, Hack said that the new jackets (or those under the new pricing structure) will be in goat or the vintage cowhide EXCEPT for the striated lamb jacket and the Temple jacket that will be in their antique lamb as most voted they wanted some time ago. I'm not sure if the Temple will be a limited edition or a regular offering. But it will be $195 rather than the $300 it was going to be. So, even though I hated it was shelved, it seems that it will work out for all our benefit in the end.

As for a time line, I believe (I'm away from home for a couple of days and can't check my email to verify this) that Hack is going to take a well-earned vacation at the end of the month and then get to work on the new lines. I don't know enough to speculate on an exact time but I got the impression it wasn't looking that far off.

Coronado3 is that jacket a LC?? Looks like a dead on Last Crusade jacket to me or maybe a CS jacket. This an interesting offer for the money. If the jacket looks like what crismans has shown I am not sure. The back panel has a line right down the middle of the jacket, obviously it is a prototype, but still IMO I just don't like jackets that have that on them. This is interesting though what U.S. Wings is offering, looks like a great jacket for the price.

Yes, the jacket with the center back seam is a very old jacket and is only to show an example of the striated lamb leather... which looks very fitting if you go for a ROLA.

No, this is the U.S. Wings Temple of Doom prototype that was made of vintage cowhide.... The production model will be like this pattern but made in antique lamb.

Re: Some big US Wings Indy jacket news

Post by crismans »

Okay, I'm back from Heck Town (or Disney World as it's more traditionally known) so let me clarify a bit here. The pics I posted in my first post in this thread are from an old Wings jacket. I've heard it's from right around the time that Wings took over Cooper (or merged? the exact process isn't necessary to know for our purposes here) so we're talking a ways back. So, like I said, take the pattern shown on that old jacket with a grain of salt. That pic is there solely to show what kind of leather you'll be looking at with a Wings striated lamb jacket (which, as Dan said, is pretty darn Raiderish). I'm assuming (with all that implies :[ so take note ) that the striated lamb jacket will be made using Wings' current pattern, but I'll try to remember to ask that when Sgt. Hack starts working on these.

As for the Temple jacket, we're looking at a different pattern from the current Wings offering (much closer to a Temple of Doom look) that Holt and I (Holt doing much of the heavy specs work) worked on. This odyssey is detailed in the thread link I posted in my first post here. The pic that coronado3 has posted is of that Temple of Doom prototype. Please note, however, that Holt photoshopped the pics coronado3 posted to give a better approximation of what the jacket would look like. The prototype was/is in Wings vintage cowhide, which is quite a bit lighter in color. This seemed to be throwing some people at the time. Holt photoshopped the leather color to better approximate what the jacket would look like in the antique lamb. Look at the original thread to see what the antique lamb looks like or go to Wings site to see some jackets done in it. It's a beautiful hide.

So, to summarize ;) , goat and vintage cowhide jackets in the current Wings pattern will be $195.95. There will be a striated lamb jacket (I'm thinking the current pattern) for the same price. And there will be a Temple of Doom jacket (patterned closer to the movie jacket) in antique lamb for $195.95.

Everything else, I'd be totally guessing on and you don't want that, believe me. ;)

Yeah, I'm going to definitely take that plunge when this comes out. NOT on a credit card though! =; Seriously, it probably sounds like I harp on my budget a lot, but I do blow money on other things. So, my coming across as being frugal is actually just my attempt to save money for my other vices. It would be nice to just have one.

Re: Some big US Wings Indy jacket news

Post by jamesdell »

Hi, I'm new to the boards and have been reading a lot about the Wings jackets. On a limited budget this news is getting me excited.

I was wondering though if the new line will have the snaps on the windflap like the CE jacket or not (like the others).

I'm guessing these won't have the snaps on the windflap. In fact, not all the CE jackets came with the snaps. I have two CE jackets (I got smaller) .... one had snaps and the other didn't.

Thanks for the info :TOH: . I still can't wait, my first jacket appears to be in the works. I hope we get an e.t.a. sometime soon.

No problem and welcome to the board! US Wings makes great jackets, I'm sure you'll be pleased.
